The Brush and Palette / Bright College Pheonix
« on: May 13, 2013, 06:47:25 PM »
I quite like that new High Elf pheonix, so I thought I'd pop up the local gW shop and get one.  It wasn't until walking back that I had an idea that I could put a Bright Wizard on it, and make it an Empire one, so when I got home I raided the bitz box.

Chopped up a Deathclaw Head, Barding from an already chopped up Demigriff.  Various bits to make a wizard, and Greenstuff to cover up the gaps and stuff

The Brush and Palette / Breaking a great big project into smaller projects
« on: February 23, 2013, 11:46:13 PM »
I've got a vast Empire army. I mean really huge.  That I've been putting together for 20 years or more.  The last time I sat down and listed it all and worked out how many points it would be (even if there's no chance of it being correctly balanced) it was around 36,000 points.  But it has grown even more since then, in fact it could almost certainly be called a 40k army,

The trouble is probably only 5-6k is painted.  Most of it is grey plastic, bare metal, undercoated, still on sprues, or even in sealed boxes.  And I want to change that.

I don't really get much time to paint, but I realise when I do, I procrastinate - making a cup of tea, going on twitter, watching telly, coming on here to see what everyone else is doing, changing water, thinking about the next idea, glueing something else.  Basically doing anything but actually getting on with the miniature that I'm supposed to be painting.  If I could concentrate more, and get better organised I could get more done, and I'm determined to do it.

However, it seems such a daunting prospect with so much to get through.  I mean I could put together an army for every state within the empire, plus various themed armies, and lots of wierd and wonderful crazy things.  But even some of those need breaking down into smaller projects, because they still look too big.

So I need to pick a project, then a sub-project, and then a unit within that project.

But I can't decide what to pick.  So, I'm putting up this post to see what you lot think.  These are the options.

A state army - Infantry - Any province or city-state I'll have units for - not big hordes for the most part, usually 15-20, there are some bigger units, but not many.

A Knightly order, I've got current models, old models, old-old models, for each the major orders, plus a set of foot-knights for each.

A cult army - theme units for a cult of Sigmar or Ulric army, plus I would count getting priesthood done

The colleges army - some of the long time members of this forum will have seen my crazy idea a while back for a Colleges of Magic army, with themed units, and tons of wizards.  Any of the colleges

Pick a theme, and I've probably got models for it, so what would you like to see?

So, got the new Emperor Karl-Franz on Deathclaw, and the first thing that strikes you is how huge Deathclaw is

So, with a few people mentioning a size comparison on here, I've got a few compare shots, with the new griffon, Reaper - the Warhammer Forge demi-gryff, new demi-griff, and knight

The Brush and Palette / This idea might have gone a little out of hand
« on: August 01, 2010, 01:45:51 PM »
The other day, I was sorting through some stuff, making notes of units, and came across my old Light College Acolytes, and it occured to me they don't really have any rules any more, so I just defaulted them to Free Company.  It then reminded my that I had a huge pile of Free Company bits and pieces to put together, which I had left for ages, as I didn't really know what I was going to do with them, one big mob or not.  I already have a couple of gang type units of Free Company, and a citizen mob converted from Free Company bits....but I still had loads left.  Looking at the acolytes and the pile of bits, the idea hit me that I could probably rumamge together a unit of 10 Free Company for each of the Colleges of Magic, it was just a case of finding the right bits for each theme

So I put together some concepts, and this is what I've come up with, scavenging spare bits from other sources...

The Light College.

Really this was the easiest, since the existing Acolytes provide the template.  So a few High-Elf bits, and some Greenstuff and the right head..

The Bright College.

Theme obviously is fire, so it was a simple matter of pinching Flagellant bits and pieces, and a flaming sword

The Amber College.

I was thinking this would be hairy heads, or the new archer fur hats, fur cloaks, and flagellant bodies.  I think I might add some greenstuff fur bits coming over the shoulder from the cloaks.

The Gold College.

One of the tricker ones to come up with, So in the end, I kind of went for wealth and bling.. Flashy bits, and I used bodes from a spare state troops set, and spare arms and stuff from other kits including pistoliers

The Jade College.

Since I couldn't think of many kits that would have sickles and staffs, I went for archers, using High Elf bodies, Empire heads and arms, and Wood Elf Glade Guard cloaks

The Celestial College.

This one was probably the trickiest of them to really come up with the concept for.  In the end I used things like the telescopes, binoculars, and a shorted Hochland long rifle, and will probably have them a mix of hand gunners and pistols, possibly modifying them with scopes.  I've added the big stiff collars from spare wizard parts, to really give them something, and in the end I think it was tidying the bandana free company heads so they look bald helped as well.  I also didn't want them to look too much like engineers.

The Amethyst College.

Used the Wood Elf Glade Guard hooded heads, a scythe from the flagellants kit, not much beyond that, I think the paint job will do most for these.

The Grey College.

Pointy hats was the first thing I thought of, used up some archer bodies.  I think they need something else, so that may be long Gandalf beards

I welcome you comments and suggestions, and I realise that by buying the extra flagellants and archers, I've now still got even more Free Company to find a concept for, but I guess inspiration will come along.

The Brush and Palette / For the er.....Emperor?!
« on: January 23, 2010, 12:28:57 AM »
Hi,

It's been a while since I posted anything, but then it's been a while since I had a chance to to really get any serious painting done.  For the last few months it's been busy, working away a lot.

Anyway, I thought I'd get back in the swing of things with something, but I couldn't decide whether to go with some 40k stuff or Fantasy.

In the end I kind of went for both.

The Brush and Palette / Oxycutors Army - New Pics - 27/02/2013

Hi all,

Long time lurker who's finally found my cable for my camera.  And done some re-arranging of furniture in order to put my stuff on display.

Anyway, I've been collecting since 3rd edition, so that's 20 years.  And I really have an embarassing amount of painted stuff to show for it.  However, I do have 30000 points worth of stuff.

I'll be posting more stuff in the new few weeks as I'm going on a major effort to get some colour on this stuff, and I'm re-basing everything from boring old goblin green to a more up-to-date style.

Unfortunately I don't have a big enough space to put the whole lot together, so here it is in parts

The painted stuff:-

The not painted stuff, and the stuff to be re-painted:-

And the big pile of plastic sprues:-

As I said, lots of stuff, and more pics soon
