The Town Square / Activating Go Up/Down Buttons in Threads
« on: January 25, 2013, 06:06:25 PM »
Could an admin please turn these buttons on?  They're a standard SMF feature, and they make getting back to the top of a thread much quicker after you've just posted.

Warhammer 40k Discussion / The 40K Abbreviations Thread
« on: December 29, 2011, 11:36:08 AM »
Are you new to 40K?  Do you find all the abbreviations which experienced 40K players use confusing?  Do you wish that there was some way to find the answers?  Well, when you have a problem and no Fantasy player can help, you can call the 40K abbreviation explanation team  :icon_biggrin:!

Putting that dramatic introduction to one side, this thread is for collecting commonly used abbreviations in 40K.  If you have any which I have missed, and there are probably loads, as I don't use many abbreviations myself, please let me know.

BA = Blood Angel
BT = Black Templar

Given that the forum now has a 40K section, hurrah :), and that there hasn't been a great deal of attention for the Eldar thus far, I thought I would chip in by copying my updated Eldar Guide from Warseer over here.  I may also add some other articles, and/or useful links to Eldar tactics should anyone be interested in reading these, and if it's allowed to link to other sites.

This post will be used as an index for sections within this thread as it develops, as well as other links.

I raised this issue a while back, and added a screen shot to highlight the problem (see this post for details), but the page still looks the same for me.  Have I broken my stats page somehow, or is this the same for anyone else?  If it is a forum issue, is there any way that it can be fixed?

The Town Square / Bookmarking Threads - Is this possible?
« on: June 09, 2010, 10:14:43 PM »
I have noted that it is possible to set a thread to notify, but I have never been able to find an option to bookmark a thread, so that I can access it easily when I want to, but I am not notified if it receives new replies.

If there is some way to do this that I have overlooked, would somebody be able to explain it to me?

If, however, it is not possible, could this feature be enabled?  It is particularly useful in my experience, especially if you don't enjoy having your e-mail system clogged up by notifications, or for keeping track of useful old threads.

The Electors' Forum / Estalia
« on: March 25, 2009, 12:42:35 PM »
I've been trying to find out more information about Estalia, but there isn't a great deal of background on this nation in any books which I possess, and information on the internet seems rather limited.

Does anyone know of any books which contain more background and narrative material on Estalia?  Are there any relevant internet pages which go into quite a bit of detail on this region that I may have overlooked?

I know that there is some limited background in the old Dogs of War Army book (which I own), but I'm interested in going into greater depth regarding Estalia, as I may well want to create an Estalian army alongside my Averland army at some point in the furture.

I would be grateful for any suggestions that anybody has regarding where I could find out more about Estalia.

The Parade Ground / 3000 points: Averland Army (Themed)
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:51:17 AM »
I have my second battle against the new Vampire Counts this week, and after scraping a draw in my first game against them, I've decided that I need some advice with my list, as I'm not sure that it's up to the task.

Just a few points before I post it:

1. I play an Averland army, so some units (e.g. Halberdiers) are included because they fit the background of this province.  Such units may not be the best units, but I like themed armies, so I really want to keep units which fit the Averland theme.

2. I don't play in tournaments, and I dislike overpowered lists, so please don't suggest power gaming combinations, such as War Altars, two Steam Tanks, and Karl Franz on a Dragon.

3. Please bear in mind that I have very limited choices for my State Troops.  This is because I didn't buy enough boxed sets before they changed the sixth edition to seventh edition plastics, so there are some units that are not big enough, and others which I just don't have (e.g. Swordsmen).  I refuse to buy seventh edition plastics for the Empire as they are ghastly models without exception.

Taking these points into account, please give me as much feedback on my list as possible, and where you feel it could be improved.

Lords:

Grand Master (Knights of the Blazing Sun) 245 points (leads Knights of the Blazing Sun)
Laurels of Victory, Holy Relic

Light Wizard Lord 291 points (attached to Knights of the Blazing Sun)
Level 4, Barded Warhorse
Rod of Power, Orb of Thunder

Heroes:

Bright Battle Wizard 164 points
Level 2, Barded Warhorse
2 Dispel Scrolls

Battle Standard Bearer 183 points (attached to Spearmen)
Full Plate Armour
Imperial Banner

Warrior Priest 144 points (leads Halberdiers)
Two Handed Hammer
Armour of Meteoric Iron, Icon of Magnus

Warrior Priest 111 points (leads Spearmen)
Heavy Armour, Shield
Sword of Might

Core:

25 Halberdiers 170 points
Full Command, Shields
Detachments: 10 Free Company 50 points, 5 Crossbowmen 40 points
I know that Swordsmen are better, but Halberdiers go with the Averland theme, and I don't have a large unit of Swordsmen to field even if I wanted to

20 Spearmen 140 points
Full Command, Shields
Detachments: 8 Swordsmen 48 points, 5 Crossbowmen 40 points
I know this unit is too small, but I don't have any more models unfortunately

5 Knights Panther 115 points

10 Handgunners 105 points
Marksman, Hochland Long Rifle

12 Tilean Crossbowmen 96 points
I know there's no difference between Tilean and State Crossbowmen, but having the read that Tileans can be found in an Averland army, I decided just have the name for reasons of background

10 Huntsmen 100 points

15 Flagellents 160 points
Prophet of Doom
I would have liked a larger unit, but again I have no more models

Special:

9 Knights of the Blazing Sun 304 points
Inner Circle, Full Command
Standard of Arcane Warding

20 Greatswords 230 points
Full Command
I'm really not sure whether this unit is worth it.  Any thoughts?

5 Pistoliers 90 points
Outriders would have been better I suspect, but alas I don't have any

Great Cannon 100 points

Mortar 75 points

The basic plan if for my infantry to form a defensive centre around the BSB with Imperial Banner, while I use my cavalry to smash through one flank.  It's the old hammer and anvil tactic, which has worked for me well in the past, but against these Vampires, I'm not so sure.  I do have a VC army myself, and the book, so I'm well aware of what I'm up against, by my opponent is very crafty, and often has some very clever combinations, often using less favourable magic items, which catch me by surprise.

Anyway, please give me your thoughts on the list.
