The Electors' Forum / Re: Empire: Character Heavy?
« on: February 04, 2013, 02:51:45 PM »
Yes, Empire armies tend to be very character heavy.  Because our infantry tend to be a little on the weak side, we need characters to make 'em tougher.  Warrior Priests, BSB, wizards are all essential.

I have just started taking an Arch Lector w/ my knights (got a great mini from Game Zone) and, my goodness, does that just rock.  I am getting a little ticked because my army has become entirely Warrior Priest dominated, but it just works.  No War Alter yet though, I like him with the knights too much.

I skipped 7th edition, so this may have changed there, but I do not get why a charging unit does not get to strike first.  It seems silly to me that a unit of knights armed w/ long, bad ass lances has to strike second on a charge against a unit like Dark Elf corsairs.  Lame.

Don't charge them into anything higher than S4.

Yeah, that is probably my biggest issue.  I probably use them most often to attack my opponents elites.  they are knights!  They should attack the bad guys tough guys, but then they tend to lose  :-o

It is also a widely known fact that despite using ICK, Reiksguard and/or Knights with greatweapons, Str3 empire horses actually win the combats.  :icon_lol:

SO TRUE!!!

* Dont rush into infantry head on. this will rarely do well.

Yeah, I've learned that.  This kind of ticks me off though...

* Dont be afraid to run your knights around the conflict area - this gives you some force projection and it gives your enemy something to worry about (what is he doing with those knights, when is he doing it)

I'll try it!

*Support your knights. We are empire, we cant win one on one fights. you need to dissect your opponents army and take it apart in pieces. so - in gaming terms, Try stacking one of your flanks with your knights. Block/impede the opposite flank with chaff/throwaways and then double charge something with your knights/infantry if your not hitting things with two units, or worse your letting him dictate the fighting terms. your going to have a bad time.

Yeah, this is what I suck at.  I need to get better at coming up with a solid plan for my knights.  Easier said than done!

Sorry but... put a warrior priest in them. I think with 12 it's well worth the investment. I use an archlector in mine because it's a good way to get a use out of him as a general, and it's a unit tat can take banner of discipline.

You know I haven't thought of putting an Arch Lector in there.  Only 35 points more and you get an additional wound and 9 Leadership!  That could be great...  Warrior Priest themed army here I come.

A Warrior Priest does give a lot of options with the different prayers and Hatred. Yes, there is a common thread of having lots of Warrior Priests - I personally like it, but some don't.

A question might be what you are using the Knights for and what is killing them. As counter-intuitive as it might seem, running multiple smaller units (like 2 units of 5) might work better if you are using them for redirection, chaff-clearance etc. If you are losing them to "unit killer" spells etc. it might be better to have more targets.

Great advice!  I refuse to put them in small units.  It doesn't seem very "knightly" :)

My main opponents are Chaos, Tomb Kings, and Dwarfs.  They all seem to have great ways of massacring my poor knights.  They seem to attract a lot of attention so I guess that frees up the rest of the army, but still it would be nice to successfully route something with them.  I'll probably make them bigger and/or put a Warrior Priest in there.

Sorry if this thread already exists, but does anyone have any suggestions how I could make my knights more impactful?  I find that they just aren't that effective.  They usually get their butts kicked or are just generally ineffective.  I usually run them in a group of 12 w/no hero or Lord.  I've tried them w/a captain, but it really didn't help much.  I haven't tried them w/a Warrior Priest yet, because I don't have the model and I'm kind of stubborn in that the solution for every stinking unit I have seems to be to put a Warrior priest in it!  Does every unit in the army have to have a Warrior Priest???  Sorry, my army is quickly becoming a Warrior Priestpalooza.

Thanks!

I always play 49 with a Warrior Priest.  Halberdiers die by the handful!  A stiff breeze seems to kill these guys!  I tried playing with 2 hordes of 40 and too many of them died.  Now one unit of 49 works a lot better for me.

Your Archer detachments should be 35 points.

I say get rid of the Crossbows and take a Halberdier horde.  Never leave home without them!  You've got the two cannons and steam tank.  Soften up an approaching army and then slam into them w/ your knights and halberdiers.

I suck w/ pistoliers, but some people make them work.

Good luck!

Wizard w/ the Archers
Warrior Priest is w/ the Halberdiers
Captain BSB w/ the Greatswords - This might seem weird, but I fail leadership roles w/ my greatswords shockingly often.  W/ the captain there it practically makes them unbreakable.

Strategy - Pretty simple, I soften the enemy up w/ artillery and magic and then move in for the kill w/ my knights, greatswords, and halerdiers.  If there is a crazy good unit, I bog them down w/ my greatswords.

I tend to do pretty well w/ this army, but I am not much above 50%.  I typically play Tomb Kings, Dwarves, WoC, and Empire, with an occasional bout w/ Vampire Counts.

Any advice on how I can make this a better army!?!?!?

The Electors' Forum / Re: Which Wagon???
« on: September 25, 2012, 10:53:31 AM »
Sweet!  I did not know about the magnet trick!  That is awesome.  Now I can have both.  I'll try them both out.  I really like the extra dispell die and the bolt on the Luminark is just awesome.  THe Hurricanum with the +1 to hit combined with the Hammer of Sigmar prayer is just insane though.

Thanks!

Not sure which wagon to get...  I only have enough money for one, so which one would you choose?  I am really leaning towards the Luminark of Hysh because I love the bolt and the extra dispell die.  The others look like they have some advantages as well though. What is the best all-around Wagon?

I don't see the value of 10 Pistoliers.  At least split them up to 5 each, but since I think they are terrible, I would take out 5 to add more swordsman, and change the other 5 to Outriders.  Just my thoughts....

The Electors' Forum / Griffon Standard - Anybody Use it?
« on: May 31, 2012, 02:44:50 PM »
Just wondering if anybody has had any success with it in 8th Edition?  I know it is not an obvious choice anymore, but I have had some decent luck with it in 2500 point games.  I use it in a spear block 6X6 with 2 15 man Halberd detachments and it can be a difficult conundrum for opponents to face.  Just wondering if anybody is using it anymore and if they've had any success.

I was thinking Grey for my Wizard (love that lore).

I am playing the spears in a 6X5 formation right now.  That helps them to usually get the bonus from the Griffin Banner on the BSB.  Not sure if that is the best way, but it is a pretty solid unit.

Yeah, I'll probably take the champion out of the Outriders.

Any other ideas?

The Electors' Forum / Re: First Takes for new rules...
« on: April 17, 2012, 10:12:30 PM »
First post!  I was a 6th edition player but skipped 7th and am back for 8th (I was busy living life).  Personally, having skipped 7th, I really enjoy the new army book!  The only 2 things I thought were really glaring issues are the free companies - 6 points!  More than Spearmen!  That kind of stinks, I really liked playing those guys in 6th Edition, but now I will probably never play them again.  The mortar is also pretty sucky now.  It kind of stinks that two staples in the 6th edition armies will probably never be seen on the battlefield again.  I like the rest of the list.  Crossbowman and handgunners are a little high, but pretty comparable to other armies.  Flagellants look about right to me having skipped 7th edition.  It should be fun too play!
