Warhammer 40k Discussion / Re: 6th edition News
« on: July 09, 2012, 01:54:57 AM »
My guard are supposed to be an inquisitorial regement anyway. I even went so far as to model the company commander as an inquisitor. With the new rules tho I can legitimately have one in my army and a vindicare for marbo to buddy up with. Awesome. Either way seeing what ppl come up with based on the new rulebook will be interesting. 1d4chan is going to have a field day.

awesome. thnx. when will i need to be at my comp to follow this btw?

Friedrich: A surfeit of stew is surely a most ignoble death. I shall have to restrict my appetites to cheese and wine lest people think me a glutton. (Slaps his non existent belly.) I'm sure we will procure a suitable repast.

Friedrich von Hersting
Age: 20 (my actual age)

Career exits:

Equipment:
Horse!
expensive clothes (colours of purple, grey and black)
8 gold crowns
jewelry worth 41 gold crowns
Warrior equipment:
clothes
backpack with tankard, cutlery, tinderbox and blanket
Rapier
knife
helmet (1 armour point on head)

Skills:
blather  (can distract someone by talking nonsense to them)
charm   (+10% to Fel tests when trying to be charming)
ettiquette   (know how to behave in high society)

fleet footed (+1 M. Add this to your profile)
dodge blow (can dodge in combat: I test to avoid all damage from an attack you see coming)
sing (you can sing!)

Friedrich fancies himself as a dapper gent but somehow his sword always ends up doing the talking (assuming I get a sword), and his sword has an extremely limited and painful vocabulary. This lead to him accidently killing a rival for his betrothed’s affections when he was provoked to rage during a duelling sesh. When people saw him still hacking at the man’s corpse in a blind rage he feared the noose and to add insult to injury when he asked his betrothed to run away with him she (rather sensibly) declined. So here he is running away, totally oblivious to the fact that the man he killed was discovered to be a mutant and he is therefore off the hook. Still he hopes somehow find absolution and has recently become obsessed with the cult of sigmar in the hopes of saving his soul.

His horse is called Grane.

phew thanks. much appreciated. i had to come up with the character background on the fly so forgive me if it's a bit stereotypical. Also i didnt want to copy anyone elses ideas. I usually play a character very similar to fandir's although with slightly more of a moral compass.

Aaaah is it too late for a fifth character? It's cool if your happy with four but if yes i already wrote up the necessary stats and stuff. please?

8
so give him stuff that makes him more survivable. Then hopefully u will have won the combat before the challenge even ends.

because as you said this list is not designed to be competitive but merely a surprisingly playable fluffbal my reply will be perhaps unhelpfully personal with a few rules based suggestions here and there.

okay from the top.

The helm of the skaven slayer? Really? okay abandoning the top to bottom approach entirely in favour of highlighting a few key areas.

I personally like interesting non competitive armies. No offense but you have an army of the faceless masses. For regular line infantry thats fine but six identical warrior preists. i assume you double these into the block units. why? redundancy? Any way i would be tempted to axe 3 of them and spend the points instead on magic items. Not only will this provide a mechanical benifit to your preists making them survivable and annoying your opponent, magic items for me help to characterise lords and heroes. so your six identical warrior preists suddenly become (for sake of example) stalwart sergei (crown of command) who commands his troops in the name of ulric to never waver in battle, or ivan the berserker (sword of anti heroes and strength potion) whose occasional fits of righteous fury have been known to slay many an enemy champion. so just sayin you could make your army both interesting and better.

(Quick list of decent magic items) what i mentioned above, the shrieking blade, sword of might, sword of battle, enchanted shield, potion of toughness, the other tricksters shard (for the general really) and the ring of volans to name but a few.

Secondly, this again follows my previous "for flavour and mechanical benefit", have you considered shaving the large blocks of infantry to form a few detachments. I dont need to explain the benefits of a good detachment but i would recomend making them 15 men minimum.

Third, give the handgunners a marksman and brace of pistols. Stand and shoot range is considered to be the maximum range of the shortest range in the unit. Pistols put his at 12" essentially negating the minus one.

Fourth put a few magic banners in there. The two I will suggest are the war banner for the bsb - making the total bonus combat res 3 - and the one that gives horses plus 1 movement for the knights obv. There ate others but this would turn into an essay if i did more than give a few examples.

And finally, i love the lone unit of pistoliers, give them an outrider with repeter. Other than that i can only suggest minor mechanical tweaks like shove the demi's into one unit, otherwise i fear this list unless u come up against someone with a shithard lord who would walk through killing your heroes and adding their skulls to his daisy chain.

The Parade Ground / 1500pts up for reveiw
« on: May 21, 2012, 01:25:22 PM »
Im not sure of the exact points but the only mistake if any will be in the handgunner units. i will group together units with their respective characters, except the ones that dont have characters.

TGM, shield, sword of power, talisman of protection, the other tricksters shard.

7 reiksguard knights, FC

Captain of the empire, FP, Shield, Sword of battle, horse barding.

Warrior priest, crown of command, shrieking blade.

20 halbs FC

lvl 2 wizard, lore o fire, ring of volans (lore of metal and if i dont get final trans i always just take the signiature)

8 handgunners, marksman, brace of pistols.

10 handgunners marksman, brace of pistols.

great cannon

5 pistoliers, outrider repeater pistol.

I know its a rough list but i have had mostly successes with it, although that may say more about the quality of my opponents. What is your opinion and can i improve the list without having to significantly change its make up.

Optional opinions on my next 500pts aswell if ur up for it and how you think i should deploy them.

30 spearmen fc

14 crossbowmen

another cannon

character of some sort? suggestions?

i havent totted up the points for this part at all.

The Parade Ground / Re: 2000 point lists for critique

Okay i'll start from the top.

Your general is in with the halbs i presume seeing as they are the most likely to run. Youve given him some fairly basic gear which will help him in combat but by no means make him a tank. I tend to maximise potential where i can so i would be tempted to say dont bother with might. +1 S will not really help you if the enemy decides he really wants to kill your general so instead i would give him the shrieking blade. This gives him fear enhancing the possibility of the combi charge being super successful and even if an unlucky combat leaves you bogged down it can save you in later turns assuming your steadfast holds out. other than that you could remove the pistol just to save a few points but it wont matter much.

The wizard lord. I find that dispel scrolls just tend not to matter because they cant save you from an irresistable. if you really want to stop a spell just sink all your dispel dice into it, so you could save points there by dropping the scroll.

A captain is a captain no complaints there.

The WP is with the knights yes? Okay i would drop the hammer and give him a sheild getting the +1 to your save then drop his magic items in favour of the crown of command. Makes your knights stubborn, whats not to like. Protect him instead by not charging enemy characters or accepting challenges with the unit. I noticed that none of your characters are really hard as old biscuits as i think you tend to rely instead on he effectiveness of your units thus i am so far advising you to take items that i think will increase your units potential.

no further complaints till the handgunners. Give the marksman a pair of pistols and heres why. The rule for stand and shoot states that the range at which you count at shooting is the maximum range of the units shortest ranged weapon. The pistol puts this at 12" negating the minus one for standing and shooting.

finally the helblaster. have you considered just taking another cannon.

back to the wizard for a moment, if you took another cannon you could ignore the wizards high strength lore in favour of a more buff related lore to further enhance your army. Although i will admit that comet of cassandra's mum is fantastic.

Thats it really. it is a good list. It just surprises me to find characters being used the way you do. I tend to use my characters or should i say character (a TGM) as a sledgehammer. seriously i run a unit of knights with three characters in it. The unit has never been defeated to this day.

13
a single character can make 80 men virtualy unbreakable. take a 40 block then two detachments of 20. then a general or captain, up to you. CROWN OF COMMAND. gives them ALL stubborn. have fun.

Empire Army Book 8th Edition / Re: Trying to figure out detachments
« on: May 20, 2012, 11:33:00 PM »
Simply put there are several things you can do aswell.

1. dont take such weak detachments. put the two tens into one 20 man unit 5 wide.
2. if you want to charge you need your detachments up with ur unit obv but if u play wait for the charge then put them back about 3" but within an inch of the parent.
3. put a character with the crown of command in the parent unit. it gives the unit stubborn and thanks to the new detachment rules ur dments get stubborn too.

you can still lose of course but cold blooded ld 9/8 stubborn re-rollable is going to be damn impossible to break. i find the ring of volans using the lore of metsl signiature spell will take care of most armies knights.

Empire Army Book 8th Edition / Re: Brace of pistols ... typo?
« on: May 20, 2012, 11:22:56 PM »
a brace of pistols isnt multiple shots. you just get 2 shots per guy so they hit on 4s. The outrider on the other glove does suffer multiple shots so hits on 4s but gets 4 shots. short range obviously although i didnt know that pistols suffered from long range penalties.
