The Brush and Palette / Re: The Grand Principality of Ostland by InvaderZim
« on: December 27, 2012, 08:42:20 PM »
Being a Sunderland fan (Soccer to the uninitiated) I cannot bring myself to paint anything from Ostland. Had von Raukov for nearly 20 years and still not even undercoated him! Ironically I have not painted anyone from Talabheim.

Lovely Panthers by the way and again I have had the issue painting Thyrus - painted, stripped, painted, stripped and ready to go again.....

The Brush and Palette / Re: Amber wizard from the new griffon?

One thing to bear in mind the wizards cloak is quite downwards in orientation and can collide with the horses ass. I heated and bent my wizards cloak to allow him to sit a horse and look normal. I also cut down the saddle to prevent the wizard looking like he was leviatating above the saddle cloth of a normal horse model. The saddle is meant to fit in the griffon's throne and is so a bit more bulky than the average mounted model. If left normal it can look like the wizard is wearing incontinence pants.

Lovely paint job as always but that is one ugly mini - only thing I like is the tache.

Love the models and really nice paint jobs - I've recently started a retro empire army (another one) in which I am not allowed to include anything later than 4th edition as empire models. Just trying to figure out if the warhammer quest minis were 4th or 5th edition. I want to include the noble, warrior priest and witch hunter but not sure if my self imposed rules allow.

It took me months to track down the 3rd edition wizard you have painted. I count the foot and mounted versions as twin brothers in my fluff - they have differnet coloured hats.

Thanks for all the replies - mine turned up today in the post.

I am tempted to go with a muted gold armour scheme - special armour for a special model. I just need to decide the province. Mr CW your purple/yellow combination is very tempting especially the purple sash.

There were sold at some events at warhammer world and US some years back all labelled cry havoc - he was available to buy at the events a bit like the forge world event only figures are now.

I didn't really pay the 75-100 quid being asked for. My came at £16 and pennies and was being sold as a greatsword champion - lucky the lister didn't know the origin of his mini or the going rate. My is definitely not a recast - can't wait to strip and get started.

I would have paid more but not the £75 being asked - this is partly because I knew Mr CW had one so I had to have one too.....

PS love the paint job/colour choice Boreas_NL. I had not seen any of your models below but will be checking for more.

Hi all

Just won one of these on ebay - looking for inspiration for what colours to paint it once its stripped. I feel it needs to be more than just a GS state trooper colour scheme.

PS. the wife's gonna kill me when she finds out what I paid for one mini.....  ::heretic::

The Brush and Palette / Re: The Imperial Dragon
« on: July 02, 2012, 07:16:52 PM »
I've part painted two versions. One is the plastic Dark Elf dragon in red. (I know I read the dragon is red somewhere but can't find the source). The other is painted gold and is the 3rd edition Great Imperial Dragon as shown in Spjuth's link. I have the 3rd edition empire general with the two wings on his back holding a hammer acting as KF on this one.

I must finish one of these two models soon..... most likely the gold one as I am into painting 3rd edition models at the moment.

Nice start -  :eusa_clap:

Two quick ideas that can make a big difference. 1. Add some black dots to the end of the handguns to represent the inner barrels. 2. Add some highlights to the warrior priest's face - cheekbones, nose ridge, point of chin and forehead and this will make a nice contrast and make the face the focal point of the figure - always worth spending a little more time on character models. A few well placed highlights will help with any issues you have painting eyes which are always a pain to get right.

Hope they had soft bog-roll.....

When are these available and what price do you think they will go for - must be cheaper than buying GW ones from ebay?

Very nice models by the way - I especially like the variety of headgear - it will be nice to have more than two hat variations!

Did a quick search on Google. Check out the cover of the Books of the South omnibus. If you can get the version without the title block, it has a great image of the banner. Flaming skull all the way!

It also appears someone else has done and empire related Black Company for warhammer in the past.

Grutch - please stay with the series. The first book is very basic and I was also was not impressed after the hype and comparisons surrounding the series. The first book struck me as being almost an outline for a real novel, much like a movie storyboard is to a finished movie. However, the series really takes off after the 2nd-3rd book and the last 5-6 are ace. I reckon they are closest in style to Eriksson's Malazan books and there are clear crossovers - something openly acknowledged by Eriksson.

Underdawg - I have never really seen a picture of the banner only the descriptions in the books. I know there are some fan forums with lots of pictures of these kinds of fantasy series done by fans both professional and amateur so it may be worth checking in Google Image.

Really nice - looking forward to seeing more.

Love the mini - I agree with you Mr CW. The model is much better in your hand than in the photos GW have put out. However, although your paint job is up to your usual very high standard I dislike the colour choices - sorry no offence meant just my honest opinion. I have no issue with the flames being non-conventional colours but the choice of non-traditional colours for the robes of a bright wizard is something I can't get my head around. I stress again the painting is great and better than what I could do its the colours you've used for the robes that is my issue - had you considered red or orange ones ?

I also have this model half painted as I am having "fun" with the flames in the newer realistic but inside-out to my way of thinking and traditional painting style. Keep up the good work Mr CW as I have a slightly competitive nature (in a nice way) with regards to your blog with regards to collecting and painting although I stress I am losing very badly.

I agree with Harv as that was my first reaction as well - possible prototype for the pit fighter which was rejected due to the poor design of this one and replaced with the released model.

Some people have too much money - quite a nice diorama but Demigryphs are not "cheep".

Must resist urge to make jokes about cock fighting..... :eusa_wall:

The Brush and Palette / Re: Stole these shoes off some bum.
« on: June 09, 2012, 09:04:45 AM »
I just use lots of liquid green stuff to turn his bare feet into shoes - seems less wasteful and easier than trying to sculpt with proper green stuff.

I'm off to check out the hobo statetrooper as I had not spotted how ugly he was and need to verify for myself.

After long discussions on the forum about how ugly our core troop models are I reviewed some other races and I reckon we got off lightly compared to the Dark Elves. Their xbow/spearmen models are pants especially the heads. They get a full range of monkey head style helmets.....

Like the lady suggested  model - not so keen on the croaker model - does not look like a man. Reaper have lots of evil paladin type models which may fit what you are looking for. Are you planning on the shoulder crows for croaker? This would clearly identify it as him.

Can't wait to see you interpretation of Goblin and One-eye the best double act around with Fiddler and Hedge a close second.

Are you going to do all the characters from the Black Company books? - I will be very interested in seeing you interpretations.

Your spearmen look well fed up btw. Long walk all the way south.

The Brush and Palette / Re: Deep Red armor
« on: June 07, 2012, 09:09:24 AM »
Go fro the new base colour khorne red - better than mechrite red in my opinion - less pink. Then follow with a badab/nuln black wash and highlight from there using your preferred reds depending on whether you are going for warm or cool colour. Finish of with baal red wash to get deep red tone.

Is this glued or just screwed together. I'm sure you've though of it but it could be fun to undercoat if already glued. Anyway nice job so far; I will watch with interest.

I use ceramite white base, watered down badab/nuln wash then ceramite layer/drybrush. Finally then skull/scar top layer as the ceramite is slightly off-white. This gives me a decent clean but shaded white as is pretty quick and simple. I find one coat of ceramite does the job of several coats of pale greys/skull white to get decent coverage over the black wash.

Have you tried the new base colour ceramite white. This will cover anything and if applied properly will not go on nice and thin. You can extreme highlight in skull white afterwards.

24
Please don't strip it - I would be well happy with it. Only thing I would do is as suggested make the hat and feather different colours and maybe use gloss varnish on the blood to make it more wet looking.

Is the piece of cloth hanging over his ass not a piece of parchment covered in holy script rather than part of his read robes. Obviously its your model so your choice how you paint it but wasn't sure if you had thought about this. I was thinking similar to how you had done the parchment on his left hip. next to the lower hammer.

Another nice paint job - love the red bits and skin tone. I like the muscular arms as he looks like he could actually lift the hammers and do some real damage to heretics and chaos scum.
