Bye Bye White Dwarf
« on: October 15, 2008, 09:32:46 PM »
Okay, so yeah I know that the White Dwarfs have been pretty shoddy recently compared to those not even five years ago, but I still love getting them to stay on top of new releases and anything GW related.  Well after my subscription ends next month, Gamesworkshop has lost a White Dwarf customer.

I received my latest White Dwarf in the mail today, and noticing that only 1 issue is remaining on my subscription, I realized that I better call them to renew it.  Well, then I opened up the plastic covering it to find a price mistake notification slip, saying that the subscription price, to get a new subscription, and to renew a current one, went up by $20US!!!  Fuck, most basic magazine subscriptions are around $20, and they are asking $80($75 to renew).

Not only is the magazine utter trash, now they are asking people $80 to take this trash from them.  Don't companies typically lower prices if they want to sell product and get new people to buy the product?  Prices world wide seriously can't be going up so much that GW had to raise it by $20.  If thats the case, every magazine subscription would be around that price, and I know that is not the case.

Yeah, if you didn't notice, I'm not a fan of GW as of late.

I'm not sure if this is world-wide, but Australian prices for nearly everything except plastic kits have recently been bumped up by a price bracket. I'm fairly sure that includes WD subscriptions.

I'm sure it is.  I just haven't seen such an extreme price increase like this from them, and it surprised me, since the price of WD has been actually pretty steady for quite a while, and now, bam, $20US more.

20 dollars is not very much...
I know GW takes a lot of flack, but the company is in trouble, and needs mo' money.

Well then they should write a more interesting magazine. It's boring and I don't want it.

definitely, it sucks.

But a lot of the flak GW takes is silly. Obviously it sucks for us that the price goes up,but GW is really in trouble isn't it?
which also explains why space marines are constantly re done...

it is a business after all.

$80 is fucking retarded!  Like rufus said, most subscriptions are nearly free.  That said, when  I was working in the magazine/newspaper business, the reason for that is that they make their money in advertising and the price of the magazine is to make up for the cost to produce it.  With GW, they don't advertise outside parties and use the magazine to present their product.  You would think they would pay themselves inhouse to ensure the sticker price of the magazine was competitive.  Apparently it is not.

The subscription price should be significantly less than the the newstand price.  Normally this is to ensure that there is a large body of subscribers (which allows the company to leverage their buyers for higher advertising income).

I say buy a magazine if it is interesting, but don't get the subscription.
