GS/ great hammers?
« on: December 01, 2005, 10:31:42 AM »
Hi all,
after looking at my current units, i feel that I need detachments.
so, is it worth me destroying my 20 halberdiers into 3 lots of 5 halberd detachments? I can use the command for other things. since the halberds are not much good anyway, is it worth using them as detachments??
thanks

I'd say so. Halberd detatchments provide a good, hard hitting force to spice up combat.

And you'll definately get more use out of three detatchments than a unit, when you're army has no detatchments in it.

I have good ideas, not functional or balanced rules. When I post a revision idea, comment on the ideas, not the rules.

I would go with two units of 8 before going 3 units of 5.

A 5 man unit needs to take only 1 casualty before losing its ability to remove ranks and claim a flank/rear.

I agree you are best with 2 large detachments. A detachment of five is too fragile and will generally run after one round of shooting and not last long enough to  destroy your opponents rank bonus.

Halberdiers make great detachment, go for it. :x

Kitbashing Greatswords is one of the most gratifying conversion projects open to the Empire general. I'd say go for it! I've dug through my collection of pictures and dug out a bunch of Greatswords converted by forum members:

IF's site has an interesting alternative method for converting Greatswords using plastrcut:

I am a big fan of small detachments.  I normally use 3 blocks of infantry (GS, spear & sword) of 19.  Characters will be the 20th figure.  The sword & GS each take 5 handgunners, spear take 5 crossbow (this unit normally does not advance).  I then take 2 detachments of Free Company of 5, or 1 of 8 (if I run out of points).

I have found that most armies ignore the Free Company, but I would rather have them shooting at 5 point troops rather than my pistoliers, artillery, or main units.  Same thing for my missile detachments.

I have also found that the troops that my infantry faces often don't have ranks.  Fast troops like fliers, chariots, monsters, swarms, fast cavalry & and units of 5 knights, so it doesn't matter so much if there are less than 5 troops in the detachment.

There is always the old argument of which troops make the best detachment, but I go with TVI logic of 2 swings for 5 points apposed to 1 for 7 points.

I have a small problem, which is that upon inspection, i have 1 great sword left from the millita sprue. i belive the rest have been used for statues and/or other duties

so, can i legally get away with WW hammers?

i don't have an Ulric theme, but I will work round the fluff. is it legal to have great-hammers?

You could get away with any great weapon, I'd think. Hammers are a favored weapon of Sigmar as much as Ulric (in fact, Ulric is more of an axe guy, though you couldn't tell that by looking at his troops), so you could have a very interesting project converting templars on foot.

But I do recommend you check out the Trading Post first - it's where I got the extra bitz I needed to make my regiment of Greatswords.

I am working on putting together a unit of 25 great hammers, an all female unit made up of the Sister's of SIgmar models from the Mordheim range. They'll use the same rules as greatswords but just use their hammers instead! I think it makes more sense for them to be stubborn as they are a religious unit after all. The models themselves are awesome which is why I want to use them instead of the very bland greatsword models.
