Traditional Stirland Army
« on: August 17, 2007, 02:56:20 PM »
Greetings all, Im rather new here but have seen an aweful lot of very cool conversions and ideas so thought id put mine forwards into the boiling pot. Im an avid convertor, if not masterful i love converting everything. my last project was a full skaven horde based on Cathay, every single model converted in some way. However ive had enough of rats and am starting an Empire army. Stirland caught my attention due to its location and descriptions. The idea has kicked off with the tale of imperial painters which i have joined.

'Victor was the son of a noble lord who fought for his king on many fields of battle, he sired three sons Victor being the last, his mother dying in child birth. A sikly child unable to draw bow or sword Victor fell to menial tasks around the lands of the Hession family, reduced to the level of tax collector. During the storm of Chaos and Archeons invasion the grand army of Stirland set out with brave warriors of the moot to aid the sticken empire, Victor was left at home to tend to the families matters as father and both brothers left for glory'

So, im asking everyone for ideas for a Stirland force that holds true to the descriptions and history. All ideas are welcomed and wanted  :icon_biggrin:

Currently my ideas include.

The lord, Victor Hession is more of a unit filler, being carried on a chair by some aids as he is old, decrepid and unable to fight.

Having the army look poor and under equiped, so few handguns excetera. Canon and Morter will look old and rusty.

As the moot is in Stirland a number of halflings will join the ranks.

Sylvania is guarded by the Knights of the Raven so they will be my knightly order.

Thats all i have thus far.

It may seem strange, but in wfrp book Sigmar's Heirs there is a description of Stirland, where the author wrote that Stirlanders hate halflings (!) because The Moot were made of the finest Stirland's terrains... If you want to be 100% orthodox remove halflings, but I think that they are so great addition that getting rid of them is'nt the best idea (btw, why there should be regiments of other races in empire army book, there are many imperial dwarfs and it would be very good way to bring back the halflings to fight!).
"Victory awaits him who has everything in order -- luck, people call it. Defeat is certain for him who has neglected to take the necessary precautions in time; this is called bad luck." - Roald Amundsen, possibly about battlegaming

You could always use Halfling DoW.
I would say if you want to use wizards, use wicthes and warlocks from Mordheim, and avoid "official-looking" wizards, as they'd be with the main forces combatting the main enemy of the Storm of Chaos
So, Ostmarkers wear purple, but it's manly purple, not like that Bretonnian purple.

As the moot is in Stirland a number of halflings will join the ranks.
now hang on, the moot isn't "in" stirland, its just kind of connected to it :-P

It would still make sense to be allied with halflings though (they are characterfull)

That's a cool article...

Agreed with what everyone has said so far.

I like the idea of your leader... he represents, in my eyes, the state of Stirland itself, part of something glorious (the Empire) and yet it is marginalised (like the way your guy got shafted to the crap position - obviously for different reasons when compared to Stirland, but nonetheless...) away from its once Capital position; and lastly its supported by the masses of people to stay alive. SYMBOLIC BRO!!!

Sounds good.

hey Dantanium

I just posted a few suggestions for you on the "tale of emperial painters ideas" thread. I love your ideas and keep up the awesome work. some extra ideas I just thought of for you is maybe in a big archer regiment with a marksmen give him a rusty blunderbuss (maybe an old family heirloom) to make him stand out from the rest.

There are a bunch of great halfling models out there that would suit your purpose. Any of the halfling archer models (the ones that look like imperial citizens rather than lumpin croop's halflings) would work perfectly for your theme... just a little more rugged looking. In the posting for fortnight 3 I'll have 4 of the archers I'm talking about painted up for you to see.

Thanks to all with the helpful comments, ive begun with a simple swordsmen unit (The only unit of swords in the army, after all they are better trained) and have nearly finished a unit of militia who are supposed to be left overs from broken units of the storm of chaos pulled together to make a unit. As this is going to be a long project i will amass a considerable army i think. Saying this i will also include a contingient of the Stir river patrol, but not sure what it will consist of. My apologies for the shody pics, om using a camera phone  :P

1.This is my great cannon....dozy cat knocked it off the table hence the small blob of greenstuff.

2. The moot is in Stirland, and eventually the Emperor will hear our pleas and give us back the land those creepy little halflings stole. Im definately keeping the halflings, i only have three thus far. This happy fellow has managed to weasel himself a handgun from the very low stockpile. Im also going to have a coupl of Dwarves kicking aorund helping outas trade links with Zhufbar are maintained.

3. I agree with ostermarker, im looking for a scruffy looking wizard

4. My Militia front rank

5. There is no mention of dogs of war in the new empire army book, what then are we allowed?

6. My Knights of the Raven, a sister group of the Knights of Morr. They dislike the flamboyant and altogether heretical ways of the knights of Morr prefering a single raven feather painted grey atop their mounts head to symbolise there loyalty.

As always, all comments and ideas are welcomed by tiny little halfling arms.
