The Mad Counts Terracotta Army: Outriders Unit
« on: March 11, 2009, 10:56:58 PM »
Basing the paint scheme off of the "rough" look of oxidized terracotta warriors from China, I came up with the following:

The story behind it is that the mad count had a rogue Warpriest animate his army of terracotta statues from throughout the history of the empire- as he couldn't trust his normal army (something about their failure to put down the halfling rebellion)

Thoughts?

well... at least I must confirm that it looks like terracotta....
and I don't like it very much

I think you got pretty much what you wanted. I would try to get a bit more texture on the weapons at least... (Actually I would't start such a project)

Ooo, seen something like this before, and yours is done just as nicely.

The other guy took the Easterlings from LotR and painted them as Terracota statues and used them as Tomb Kings.

The only thing I'd suggest with yours is to paint the cloth on the guns different from the actual guns, but I do like it.
I thought he should act responsibly and just kill himself.

I would make them less white.

Strange, but not necessarily bad.  I think it could work better with infantry.  The only advice I have is to paint the guns some otehr color.  Gold just sticks out too much.

A novel concept, and something different and I imagine fun for you to try painting.  I don't understand why the guns are gold though, when the rest of the figures are painted in that terracotta scheme.  Any reason why?

On the real terracotta warriors, before they were looted from the tomb, the weapons of the warriors were bronze.

That's the only reason =P  the color on the guns is actually dwarven bronze (gw paint)

Ah ha. paint them tin bits, brown wash a bit of hawk turquise as well then a light dry brush of the worn areas of the bronze in the shining gold/dwarf bronze mix. this should dull it down quite a bit add depth to an otherwise flat image and make it look more like the terracotta figures you are trying to emulate.  For the models themselves too I would take them to the next level.  From this point do a watered down dip of half and half badab black and gryphonne sepia, depending on how watered down your wash is you may have to do more than one coat.  Let it dry over night between coats.  then do a light dry brush overall of graveyard earth and bleached bone so simulate the settled dust on them.  Also instead of the Grey you may want to try one of the tan's like vermin brown or vomit hell mix up some with the grey try it out.

Honestly, this just seems like a way to invent a theme so you can paint an army really quickly...

It is an interesting idea, but the execution needs to be thought about

you should use the GW color, TERRACTA over that white primer, slap a nice brown wash over it (GW has some fine new washes) and...at least....put a black wash on the weapons.

For the color of your weapons, I would sugest a brown wash not black.

My first thought was, hey he stripped the minis. ^^

But i guess, you could improve the paint scheme with some washes.

I dont think this idea will fly on a whole army.
I think you may finish and look back and think...umm..."what the heck did i just do?"

Far better to come up with a simple but realistic color scheme for the whole army that takes a little longer but in the end will provide you ALOT more satisfaction.
