Armies to compete against newer army books
« on: April 15, 2009, 01:19:46 PM »
I'm finding the recent armies (deamons, dark elves etc) require fairly specific army lists to stand a chance, and curious what other people are using to beat these armies.

Don't really want to play a list full of wizards.  Would take two priests rather than one of each, if i thought I could get away with it.

FYI: current list mainly about an infantry core of 2 x flagellants and one greatswords, spearmen, 2 x canons, hellblaster, pistoliers, some missile troops, bsb, general of the empire, priest and caddy.

Thoughts / suggestions very welcome.

Welcome to the Forum! Have one on Midaski's tab  :::cheers:::

I think this thread would be better posted on the elector's forum as it is asking how to deal with those armies.   That said, magic is probably the easiest way to deal with them and fire lords are what I've had the most success with.  You have to be shrewd in how you deal with them and be prepared to make sacrifices.   A lot of how you beat them lies in how you play them.

Justin, if you planning on keeping your current character setup (IE EG, BSB, priest and caddy) I would suggest taking the magical items Empire has to grant Magic Resistance (ie standard, sigil, shroud).

Currently, 4 dispel dice and 2 scrolls will not see you through the average Dark Elf or Daemon army magic phase (also true for many Vampires and probably the new Lizardmen lists).

Also, is there a particular reason why you have not included any knights into your army list?

I find that the maximum number of Light Wizards make a mockery of VC-armies, particularly those relying on raising new troops...

mmmmmmmmmmm.....d6s6 hits.....mmmmmmmm......

Sorry for confusing people.  Taken on a few comments and here's the list I'm playing with at the moment.  Theme of the army is a small Nordland town, so trying to keep elite troops down.  Would love to take a general of the empire, somehow I like the common man as general, decided to switch him out for an arch-lector.

Now has 6 dispel plus magical resistance.

Arch Lector: Warhorse, Armor of Meteoric Iron, Shroud of Magnus, Icon of Magnus 246
Battle Wizard @ 115 Pts 2 x dispel scrolls
BSB@ 127 Pts      warhorse with Barding; Full Plate Armor; Warhorse; Standard of Arcane Warding Warrior Priest @ 155 Pts; Heavy Armour; Shield; warhorse; Sigil of Sigmar; Van Horstman's Speculum

15 Flagellant Warband @ 150 Pts

20 Flagellant Warband @ 200 Pts

22 Greatswords @ 362 Pts full command + 6 archers, 9 swordsmen

5 Pistoliers @ 132 Pts with musician, outrider and repeater pistol

24 Spearmen @ 224 Pts full command and 9 swordsmen detachment

2 x 5 knights with musician

10 handgunners with champ with hochland and 5 free company detachment
10 Huntsmen 100 points

Helblaster Volley Gun @ 110 Pts
2 x Great Cannon @ 200 Pts

Thoughts much appreciated.  Thanks!

I´d drop the second flaggie block down to 15 and give both units prophets. Also, drop the handgunners detachment, I cant see it doing much good. Maybe exchange them for a archer detachment for your spearmen instead. You should now have something like 50 extra points to spend.

If your going to use Flaggies in blocks that big (which i don't advise, easy to bait and are expensive t3 models with no armour) your gonna need some screens for them.

I don't like the fact that the archlector doesn't have a magic weapon or even a greatweapon.

Wizard would be a lot more versatile and effective if he was lvl2 with the Rod of Power and would give you a average magic phase of your own.

I think you have gone a little bit over board on magic resistance, any reason for this? I don't think the BSB and any unit needs the banner of arcane warding. If you are gonna get hit by magic missile a good player would ignore your blocks especially once he knows you have MR and take out your support units e.g knights, huntsmen and the flaggies.

Don't know where you would get the points from personally i would drop the 2 flagellant blocks down to 12 man apiece maybe one even smaller and get some more knights but that's just my way of thinking.

Oh and props for using Huntsmen  :::cheers:::
We have a smart general for once. May they stay loyal and their arrows true
Is 595 points good enough for your Huntsmen?
Loving Jack 10 suited spades!!!
