Tactical Question: Griffon standard w detachment
« on: January 13, 2012, 02:59:47 AM »
Greetings all,

I have a tactical question that I hope you can help me with;

The more I read and follow battle reports, our hope in defeating our enemies in CC is about Combat Resolution.  If this is the case has anyone utilized the Griffon STandard (double rank bonus but cannot persue), and if so, was it worth the points?

My thought is to have a parent unit of Halberdiers of 30+ with a detachment of 15+.  The parent unit with the standard cannot persue, but if combat is won then the detachment can persue.  My thoughts is that up to +6 in combat resolution goes a long way and maybe worth the points.

Let me know your experiences.

It's a good idea, but the only problem I have with it is the fact it's 55pts and requires our standard bearer to carry it.  They are very vulnerable and taking the banner removes his ability to choose other magic items thus, his protection drops considerably.

I fully expect in the new book that the BSB can take a shield, which combined with FPA and a handweapon will make him 3+/ 6++(parry). This is pretty solid, and will allow him to take a magic banner for infantry units while remaining fairly secure.

Of course it's possible that with the new rules there won't be a Griffon standard anyway.

Even then my BSB will be running enchanted shield and sword of might.

I haven't played a LOT of games, but in all games I've played no one ever targets my standard bearer.  It is strange, because I always target theirs.

I played with the Griffon Standard twice and both times my BSB died before it became of any use.

He would only get the 4+ save if he wasn't in another unit. The 4+ Look Out Sir! specifies that it applies to lone characters within 3" of unit of the same type with 5 or more rank and file troops.
