Arch Lector should have Van Hortsmans Speculum to swap stats with a beefy opponent.

I don't think I would use the Speculum in a casual friendly game unless I played against Chaos, Vampires or Ogres.

If he's in an infantry unit I believe the best option is to put him on a pegasus for the extra wound.

But then he would lose the Look Out Sir roll.

General of an Army is good but I think the BSB is far more important. Re-roll Ld tests is better than 1 extra leadership.

It's +2 Leadership for the nearby halberdiers and/or swordsmen if they don't have a character with them.
If they are Steadfast, Leadership 9 is about the same as Ld 7 with reroll from the BSB, meaning they have a good chance of staying around even if they lose combat. If both the General and the BSB are nearby, they are almost unbreakable (Source: Aaron Chapman http://www.scribd.com/doc/78710145/Math-Hammer). It's the mechanics of 8th edition. Every army with cheap infantry tries to be Steadfast. I think this is good for us, because if you have the Leadership problem solved (this is relevant, I know there will be times that our state troops won't be Steadfast), you don't have to spend points on other hero characters to babysit our state troops. And if our state troops lose Steadfast, it's better not to have a cheap hero in the unit, because he will probably die with them, giving the enemy more Victory Points.

Anyway, the Army General is supposed to represent you. I would feel a lot better wearing the best equipment I could get if I had to go to battle.
