what is "ard coat"?    I don't use glossy finish accept for things like water.  I paint everything, spray it with a flat protective finish (but cover the area I want glossy)  and than last I paint the glossy finish just on the area I want it on.  It really makes that part stand out and adds interesting contrast to the model.  I will have a picture of it in a week or two.  If you want to see models with the flat finish you can see my  Grand Sigmarite army of Stirland blog down the page a ways.   All the finished painted models have the flat spray on them. You may not be able to tell in the pictures but in person the before and after is really obvious.   I think models with a flat finish look more realistic and gritty

I use it on wet areas like blood and water. The rest matte fĂnish most of the time.

As a first coat of varnish - especially on metal models.

Matt varnish isn't very protective, but gloss is.

A lot of people will do one coat of gloss and three coats of matt to take all the shine away (and then paint any particularly glossy areas over again with paint on varnish.

One of my favourite uses was on "government types" shoes in near future games, or the peaks on policemens hats

I will gloss coat for all of the above reasons, especially the protection one, it also gives a little extra deepness and blends the colors, something to do with light difraction.  I will also gloss coat when I paint a figure that I am not going to use for a while and that will be out in the open as opposed to a sealed display case. the reason being that dust is sometimes very hard to get off of a matte  finish, but with a gloss finish just a quick swipe or two from a big soft bristled brush and its all claen and ready for the flat spray before the game.
Some people used to gloss metal, leather, eyes, fluids etc, they would then flat finish clothes and all fabrics except silk, and then they would mix gloss and flat to get an eggshell finish that they would apply to the skin. It usually looked pretty good.  steveb
