I swear when I posted that last message that thread wasn't working. Maybe it was just a brief problem with my browser. Whatever it was, thanks for the link, it works fine now.

Oh, and remember boys, the sun never sets on the British Empire. Prepare to be Lloyd-George'd. Well, to be historically accurate, I guess it would be the Marquess of Salisbury, but meat sounds a lot less imposing.

As a long succession of England post forced me to think up names may I suggest,

1. Anything with 'ham' on the end, e.g Harry Ebringham
2. Something that sounds like a plant or tree, e.g James Oakley
3. Anything that sounds sort of french but not quite, e.g Montmorency (thats in a book)

Now I'm back, and have found a computer. There don't seem to be many in Cyprus and Egypt...  :?

So we are down to the last hours before the first move.  I notice not everyone has their orders in.  Who is hanging back until the last seconds????

Is this normal?

I believe he was due back before now. That was why I set the deadline so late. If no orders appear by tonight I'll shoot him an email to see what's going on.

If we dont hear from Gutsy, I assume you are opening England up.

Would we process the first turn or wait until someone gets up to speed?  I ask b/c its been almost a month now... and my Turkish troops get rather ... boisterous if not entertained properly...

I am opening up England as of NOW.

If you wish to join this game (the first move hasn't taken place yet), please post your email address in this thread (suitably masked to avoid bots).

We will need to wait for someone to get up to speed. Under the assumption that most people are fairly happy with their negotiations, I would set the deadline for 3 days after the new player signed on, and recommend that everybody set nowait in order to get the turn processing faster.

I apologise on behalf of Gutsy for the delay.

That's alright for me though, I was expecting to be late, as I have been rather ill the last few days.

Still, I'm on the road to recovery.

If I have not had any response for a player for England soon (like, next day or two), I shall set list, which means the game will be listed on the DipPouch website for people to join. This is not an ideal solution, as it means that the player won't be a W-E member, but at least we'll be playing.

Well... Rorrak said he was becoming England. I'll shoot him an email and see what's going on. I know he needs to sign up to USOS and such, but that shouldn't take long.

The View from St. Petersburg
by Charles Roburn

The Kaiser, Archduke, Sultan, King:
These four are my good neighbors dear,
Encircling Russia in a ring
That fills my heart with dread and fear.

Monsieur and Pontiff, I will bet,
Are safe. They can’t invade me…yet.
And since we have no common borders
I need not fear their armies’ orders.

But from the rest I must find friends,
For if I don’t, they’ll overwhelm
My poor defenseless Russian realm,
And then my dream of empire ends.

I must make choices. Which are wiser?
The Sultan, Archduke, King, or Kaiser?
My mind is made up. At least my body is real.

I wish we still had the applauding emoticon.

It reminds me of Auden, for some reason.

In response to Guvnor's post (I assume Rorrak is not reading this thread), Rorrak is Turkey in Sigmar, and has been a member of this forum for longer than I have (although, I haven't celebrated my First Birthday yet, so that's not saying much). He's been pretty quiet on the forums lately, but is a Top Bloke ;).

Just in case you were thinking otherwise. I didn't write that. One of my flat mates was having to anylase it as part of there  English work. She claims it is a metaphor for something.

I just Googled Charles Roburn, and all of the links it comes up with are about... you guessed it... Diplomacy.

I suspect it's not a metaphor for anything, although certainly one can read various things/images/allusions/etc into anything if one wishes.

As an example off the top of my head:

This poem is a shocking indictment on the human condition, dealing as it does with religious paranoia, Western organised religion vs Eastern mysticism, the interminable nature of the moment immediately prior to a final decision, and the terrible human weaknesses engendered therein.

'Monsieur and Pontiff, I will bet,/Are safe. They can't invade me... yet' could be an allusion to the Great Schism in the Roman Catholic, a period during which (IIRC) there were two Popes, one in Rome and one in France (at one point, I believe there was a third - possibly in Constantinople?). Clearly, the author regards Christianity as being somewhat non-threatening, however this is only due to the 'lack of common borders' between the author and Christianity. This is a comment on established religion's tendency to despise things that are similar to their own manner of thought. For example, history shows us countless examples of Christianity waging war on Judaism and Islam (or vice versa in any combination) despite that they believe in the same God. Christianity, however, does not wage war on Buddhism or Shinto, which have radically different characteristics.
Indeed, the author expresses fear only of his neighbours, and also self-loathing over the necessity to befriend one.

By distancing himself from Christianity in this way, and his dismissal of martial solutions ('defenseless Russian realm'), Roburn aligns himself with the philosophical systems of the East. Roburn's reticence to choose an ally finds resonance in the varied Buddhist ideologies, which share the common thread of the path to Enlightenment being inward. This is directly at odds with Roburn's assertion that he needs to ally with one of his neighbours lest his 'dream of empire end'.

The melancholy tone of the final stanza indicates that, like Hamlet, or Prufrock, the author does not relish the thought of committing to a course of action. The central issue of the poem is the resolution of this particular choice, and yet we only realise this at the end, giving the previous twelve lines an air of rambling, hesitating procrastination.

His hesitation in this regard belies a lack of faith in his own convictions. He desperately wishes to have the strength of will to believe that the path to greater glory is inwards, however he does not have the courage to pursue this course of action.

Oh dear. I clearly need to go back to sleep.

Please be assured that my tongue was firmly ensconced in my cheek. ;)

Oh, on the religion thing- the russians aren't and weren't catholic- they were always russian orthodox.

This could also explain the theological distance between east and west.

I reckon you are all thinking too much.

Wow, very late response to this thread.

I hadn't posted in a while because my bookmark took me directly to the forums used to be and that link no longer works. At first I just thought that there were more problems (as had been seen during that time) but after a while Vann Harl (another South African) told me he was still posting.

I'm back now but didn't peek into this forum due to trying to catch up in the main one.

As to who I am. I've been calling myself Prime Minister but I suppose it should be king. A historical Faux Pas ! :)

I must say its quite hard joining a game where most of the negotiation has taken place. Initial agreements are fairly set in stone it seems. Its ok though. I'm enjoying my throne while it lasts.

Playing Turkey in Sigmar. I took on a character type for that game and tried to Roleplay it (to myself at least) and have that character be consistent. I believe I succeeded. I hope to do the same as King but using a different character with different values.

Soooo.... to change a mantra seen earlier on these forums.

What happened in Sigmar stays in Sigmar !

Yes, I understand the desire to roleplay Turkey!  However, I wasn't aware that others were thinking the bird!  Those knives are looking sharp.

OMG

Sorry guys.  Things have been a little crazy around here.  I haven't actually checked my email since the w'end.  We're just in the tail end of moving to a new townhouse and of course this is the busiest time of the year at work.

Am I gone from the game?  I know I've all but lost but....  I'd like to finish?

Yup, just send in an order.

On other topics, having just finished my english exam I'm going to write my own Diplomacy poem, like the one sigsfried put up.
