Cult of Morr pictures - a blog (UPDATED May/18/2008)
« on: August 12, 2007, 04:06:15 PM »
Hello to all and everyone.

- THIS PART HAS BEEN EDITED: -

It turned out I wanted to make this a blog after all. If the esteemed mods or the Witch Hunters consider this to be an act of threadomancy then I guess I'll just have to be burned at the stake.

Anyhow, here is the next addition to the army. The Ordo Silenti Greatswords. The Ordo comprises of the veteran elite of the Raven Knights' templars. After witnessing all of the horrors the necromancers across the Empire have put out in their blasphemous activities, the Ordo takes pride in the fact that each and every templar fighting for their patron god is sworn to silence. The templars fight in deathly silence accompanied only by the beating of their marching feet and the war drums, not crying out even at the time of death. Why should they? Death is but a passageway to the Gardens of Morr. The Ordo dresses in a fashion resembling their patron - the old man dressed in a hooded robe.

Closeups can be found on the Tale of Imperial Painters fortnights 2 and 3.

Thanks guys for your time.

- END EDIT -

It's been nearly two years since I got an idea to make a themed army based on the cult of Morr. Since then I've been preoccupied with a lot of stuff, but FINALLY I've got something to show you.

The original concept for the army can be found here: http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=10529.0. And please, the link is only for background purposes. In other words do not carry out the dreaded act of threadomancy. Thank you.

To cut a long story short here we go. The first on the line is my general Chaplain General Sigismund the Grim (Arch Lector ruleswise):

Next is my trustworthy BSB Johann:

And then the twins. Priests of Morr (ruleswise they are Battle Wizards of the Light Order):

My swordsmen:

And the rest: Halberdiers, Flagellants, Pistoliers, Archer and Crossbow detatchments:

My Black Guard Knights:

And the Knights of Morr's Rose:

And the finally the entire army (missing warmachines):

I also promised a bonus feature so here goes:

Firstly, this is my War Altar and also my way of saying thank you to Bogenhafen and Bartuc for the inspiration I got from their work:

THANK YOU

And here is the AL himself out of his "mobile":

Then two wizards.

First is my Death Wizard:

And then A Fire Wizard casting the "Burning Head" spell:

That's all for now.

For the record I'm currently re-writing my original thread to go with 7th ed Armybook. If anyone is interested I'll post it on the Electors Forum when I'm done.

And as always critique and feedback is appreciated. It is funny how these closeup pictures show all the mistakes and errors I haven't noticed so far on the miniature itself

I remain yours in service to the Empire,
-SirU

Very original, dark and charcaterfull army!
My favorite are:
Swordsmen - fantastic banner and superb paintjob!
Knights of the Order of Morr`s Rose - great helms, great colour scheme and paintjob! (what did you use for the helms?)
Chaplain`s banner - I just love the way you have painted the writtings.

Your War Altar turned out impressive!

Keep up the great work!

Thanks guys. I'm flattered.

Knights of the Order of Morr`s Rose - great helms, great colour scheme and paintjob! (what did you use for the helms?)
Chaplain`s banner - I just love the way you have painted the writtings.

The Rose Knights' helms were pretty simple. You probably noticed the plumes? I used the knightly orders sprues I had to take those plumed helmet heads and then I used the skull from the banner pole head. Lots of filing and glue and that was it. For the musician I used the same skull combined with the 6th ed trooper helmet (the same the swordsmen sergeant has).

I must also be honest. The writing on the Chaplain Generals banner is in fact a Sisters of Battle transfer from 40k. Never the less it works for me.

I hope you also noticed my sincerest thanks for the altar idea. Your conversion contest entry gave me the idea of stone/masonry cathedral type of gothic architecture for my altar...

And finally to Soju. Thank you sir for your kind words.

And yet again, all feedback is welcome!

Wonderful!   Are the Knights of Morr's Rose an order you made up yourself or is it one from official fluff?

It's a little bit of both actually. In "Empire at War" p. 13-14 Countess Ottilia of Talabecland's cavalry bodyguard The Order of the Black Rose is introduced. The order is affiliated with Morr and they adorn their armor as well as their horses' barding with suitable imagery. Basically I took the rose symbol and skull helmets from the Order and made up the rest.

Very well executed theme. I especially like the writing on Sigismund's back banner, it seems like actual words are written there, with the intermittent spacing and varying word length. Did you actually paint that or is it a very well disguised decal?

As said before, yes, it is a decal from the 40k sisters of battle transfer sheet. But I'm very happy I managed to actually disguise that  :closed-eyes: In real life it's very hard to see it is a decal, but my light source for taking pictures tends to reflect from the decal edges a bit depending on the angle the picture is taken from. Therefore great care was taken when taking the pictures.

I'm pleased you asked though. Seems I managed to pull this trick off.  :icon_twisted:

Looking sweet. My one complaint is concerning the purity seal on the chaplain general's horse. The guy must have used 5-6 candles to be able to make that
I agree with the inhumane treatment of animals.

Very nice work, I love that you have carried the theme through so consistantly without making it look samey or making units indistinguishable (is that a word?) from each other.

Very nice!
I also particularly like the 'Knights of the Order of Morr's Rose'.

The War Altar is good too, borrowing bits for inspiration but giving it your own twist. I think the whole thing looks like a giant sarcophagus, probably carrying the bones of some long dead saint into battle!

Well done.

What did you use for the war alter base?

The Altar (the base as well as the arch) is built from bits and pieces from the 40k terrain set "Cities of Death" or something like that. I then just added bits from the new fantasy building sprues and the Mordheim accessories chest (I made a top for it with foam core) and then just added the "golden griffon" from the GotE set. Nothing fancy, just a lot of sawing, filing and glueing.

@Bogenhafen: Thanks for your kind words. From my point of view I "stole" quite a lot of your and Bartuc's ideas, this being also the reason for not entering the conversion contest. On the other hand who cares. I'm a happy camper with my altar.

And at everybody else: THANK YOU! Please keep those comments coming. I would specially appreciate CRITIQUE also. This forum indeed is probably the nicest online community there is regarding comments on other peoples painting/conversions and that stuff...

As stated in the edited part of the first post it turned out I wanted to make this a blog after all.

If the esteemed mods or the Witch Hunters consider this to be an act of threadomancy then I am sorry. Feel free to burn me.

However, I will be posting entire units here as soon as I get them finished (thank goodness for the Tale of Imperial Painters ). I'll also try to post the fixed fluff / background / rules set (for 7th ed) as soon as I get myself to actually finish writing it.

And as always C&C is greatly appreciated. I would be most grateful of CONSTRUCTIVE critisism to improve my painting further. Thanks guys!

Absolutely love this army !

As usual when I see an army of this quality, I get the 'double feeling'. Admiration and envy battle for supremacy in my heart, fortunately admiration usually wins, and envy becomes desire to try to do better..

Now usually when I hear talk of, or see Empire units made from non empire (or Empireesque) I become a naysayer of near epic proportion.

However this is the best executed example I have seen to date.

And I think that for the priestly effect you are after you couldn't have done it with Empire figures half as well.

So I will keep that in mind before I shout "NAY" next time.

Fantastic stuff,
Andy
