The proud father...
« on: June 22, 2008, 02:29:42 PM »
Hi All,

My son (age 9, next month) decided to paint up a goblin as a farewell present for one of his friends from school, this is the result and i believe he did a fantastic job. Yes there are errors here and there but this is from a boy who didn't paint for longer than i did meaning around three months.  :eusa_clap:

You can't see it on these pictures but he even used Gloss Varnish on the bloody spear.

Front of his Goblin:

Front side of his Goblin:

Back of his Goblin:

I actually asked him if he wanted to enter the National Painting Competition in the local GW shop for "youngbloods", but he said no as he is sure everybody will laugh at him :icon_eek:

Well no matter what i am proud of his result, he was locked up in his room all morning today (5 hours) and out came this.

WOW.  :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
That is amazing painting, nobody would be shamed of having an army painted to such standards. Can't he paint my minis? What't the minimum wage for a 9-year old?  :icon_wink:

I've been out-painted by someone 7 years younger than I am.  In primary school.

Makes you wonder what his painting will be like in 10 years or so.  Very nice looking, a lot better than my first minis (and I was 13 when I started).

Thank you all for your nice replies i will read all these up for him tomorrow, as he do not speak or read English yet.

Fun part is that we usually paint together and he will not paint for more than 30 to top 40 minutes before saying he is tired, but still sit around and ask a lot of questions on my painting, which i always explain him what i am doing, and often it is small tricks from up here.

He was fooling around a lot with the new washes, actually he had to do the cape wash a second time as the matt varnish messed up the first coat? any of you experienced this?

He kept pointing out some of the things he wasn't satisfied with, triangles on the hood was not clear enough and one the eyes did mess up the skin on the cheek. The highlight on the hood edge should only have been orange but he used yellow and that is to bright he thinks.
I told him all this was minor things and the Goblin was outstanding, and his friend with love it, but otherwise he could try to fix it.
But he is afraid he will end up messing it up more so he will now leave it alone.

I will give him several rounds of whatever Midaski can supply from you guys and if Midaski can not provide i will cough it up myself :::cheers::: and all you guys, for your nice replies have one as well.

Midaski can provide anything.

I know what you mean about the eyes, I had the same problem many times with that model and I've heard from people on Da Warpath that they had it too. Eyes ARE a very difficult part of any model, and I think he did a splendid job on these - I only dared painting the eyes on mine after one and a half year.

Oh man! There is no way I can ever post a picture of any thing I do on this board now  :icon_cry:
I'm 25 and am still absolute pants at painting. I was thinking of posting some WIP but after seeing what your 9 year old can do I think I'll refrain from posting anything because I'll be to embarrassed  :icon_redface:

Well do not be to hard on yourself, he did put in a huge amounts of hours to get there, and he did use quite a lot of minis over the last few months that will never be "camera material". besides as he said "the washes are awesome" almost all shading and highlights on this mini is down to the new washes, the details like eyes, shield-moon, teeth's and hood highlights/triangles is all the is not done by washes.

He probably would if asked, but i know he would not ever finish the job in time, and he still have 70+ Wood Elves that needs painting.

I just told him over breakfast of some of your replies, and he is very happy and tells me to say thanks to you all.
He allowed me to post some of his Wood Elves work as well, and then only hope you will not be disappointed.

Well i was blown away yesterday when he showed me the mini, and i was very proud as well. Your replies on his work had an even better effect not on me but on him, he can't wait until he present this mini to his friend.

WRONG !

Post your work. The comments will make you better, and this forum is so friendly, that even when people say your work is Sh*t, they do it in such a nice way that it doesn't hurt much.

Everybodys' first paintjob looks bad after a while, because painting IS an acquired skill. Some of us are naturally more apt at it than others, but everybody can achieve reasonable results with time, effort and perseverance...

If you are embarrassed about 'publicising' your painting, PM it to somebody whose work you like. Most people will be willing to give private comment on your painting, thus tutoring you to become a better painter.

I second that Warhammerlord_soth.

The postings i have made so far have been of very varied quality, the "first mini" thread where i introduced my first and not so old stuff was not great at all (picture broken, I'll try to fix that), but the comments received made me able to get to another level of my painting and my last posting including my WP (http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=22974.0) is actually what i learned from comments up here.
I am in nowhere near Golden Daemon quality, but again that is not what i am going for either. My sons result here on his latest piece are his first truly great mini, the rest is not but they do show progress in different areas and he is using techniques that i learn up here.

This mini you see in the beginning of the thread is done by using very basic techniques where everything just worked out for him, it might have helped a bit that he did it on a sunday morning instead like most of us after school/work and after kids and wife goes to bed. He was fresh and ready to start a new day and was having a clear idea of what he wanted to achieve, besides as it was a farewell present to his best friend just added to his motivation in this project.

Beside the Blood red and Yellow he used, all other colours were from Foundation paint set, which covers great and then afterwards washed with the wash set from GW as well, again this just made it easier for him.

Get a plan, stick to it, when in doubt - try it out on a spare mini first or post your question up here, i am new but have also replied on what i learned already, because as a new painter myself i understand what other newbies are going through and their questions.
Go to your local GW store and ask if they can do a quick paint session with you, they'll show you some basic stuff and the mini you do it on you get to take home afterwards (this is how my son got a spare goblin to give as a gift)

Just post it, or do as suggested PM some of us with questions and maybe a picture and we will try and help out as good as we can. (This is what the community is all about)

If you need something to get your courage up, then have one on Midaski  :::cheers:::

Wow! That is an amazing paint job for a new painter. I can see why you are so proud of your son! I love the shade of blue that he used on the cloak. My army color for my orcs is blue and I've just started painting my night goblins with midnight blue, but its coming out a bit too purpley for my tastes. Which Foundation blue did he use? I need to go out and get some for myself! :-)

8 or 9 or whatever, don't worry.  I couldn't paint that well when I started in 4th grade and I was doing 54mm.  We all start somewhere, and we can all get better with practice, patience, and perserverance.

I haven't posted any pictures of my figures because I don't have a digital camera.  However, I'm doing 5 Greatswords for Wissenlander and I hope he finds a way to get them posted so I can learn something from anyone who wants to comment.  The folks around here are often very helpful with hints and ideas, so feel free to post, and you'll be ok while picking up a few pointers from some fine painters here on this site.

:icon_eek:  If you hadn't said how old your son is I would have guessed he is around 18.  That is a really great paint job for anyone! The fact he wasn't satisfied with all those "minor" problems you mentioned tells me he is going to improve a lot and quickly.  You have to notice the minor problems and try to make them better as you paint. Otherwise you never really improve. Its good he wants to do that.   Great job!
