Basing Warhounds Question
« on: July 18, 2008, 09:04:29 AM »
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it.

Having just bought some beautiful Reaper Warhounds for my upcoming Ulrican forestry project, I am now puzzled as to how one should base them... Is there any meaningful way to do it? Do I put them on single infantry bases with separate handlers? Or do I base handlers and dogs on a common base? The problem is, one of the dogs is enormous...

and will only fits on a cavalry base. Two others are smaller and can be put on infantry bases.

Is there a coherent and playable way to do this for all?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I'm afraid all I can offer is confusion! In Mordheim wolves are based as cavalry and the wardogs are based as infantry. Mix and match would be my bet. If you're using stats grab the wolf ones from an O & G list and mosey over to www.specialist-games.com for the free wardog stats.

Oh and play lots of Mordheim.

P.S those models are absolutely cracking - I love Reaper and Ral Partha for that matter

Yeah, totally. They have got "Middenheim" written all over them!

Nice dog models as said before. Why not make a custom base for them?thin layer of foamcard or such would do.

Sure I can make a custom base, I just need to figure out the sizes... And... do I base handlers with the dogs, or separately?
As to foamcard - I really don't know why people are bothering with it. Plastruct plasticard is the way to go! Cuts easily, practically indestructible, does not warp, glues like metal... The best of all worlds!

Litko enterprises makes custom wood bases....

You can buy small sheets of plexi glass at any home depot to mak ebases with as well.  Dremel, the tool of gods.

otherwise I would stick them all on 25mm orc bases and trim off the Reaper Mounds from under the puppies feet.

Since you're looking for sizes and not advice on making a custom base (I'm surprised that the old mace wasn't being waved menacingly)...

If it's for Warhammer Fantasy...
I'd mount the dogs and handlers together onto cavalry bases...providing they fit nicely...

If it's for Mordhem...
Separate 25 mm bases...

If you'll use them for both games, use magnets so you can transfer them between the two sizes of bases.

How bout unit filler style??  Have the big one to one side, the two smaller ones up front, and the trainer behind them.  You could even do a filler of all the dogs, and the trainer(s)  on basic infantry bases right behind the filler with their whips/prodding tools.  But if you're playing mordheim, Clarkarias is right on, base em all seperate.

Thanks for all the responses and suggestions guys! Things are clearer to me now. My other question is: does base size matter? If I base them singly, can I base warhounds on larger infantry bases, like 25mm x 25mm?

Well GW official policy on basing last I read was that if the model comes with a certain base size that is the appropriate sized base for that model, if the model has been reissued with a new size then you can use the new size for your old models or keep them on the old bases.  This came about mosetly becuase of the New HE dragons and the New Giants bases compared to the old 50x50.  That and the 40K temrinators used to be on 25mm round bases and the new ones are 40mm.  My league referee for 40K dug arouns and found out I could leagally play my termies on 25mm bases since they were bought during 2nd edition with 25mm bases.

All that nonsense being said... What size base does a warhammer Pooch Come on?  and What size base does a Chaos Warhound come on?  Which stats are you planning to use since they aren't standard GW releases?  Base them according to the stats you use.

There are no warhammer pooches that's why he is asking.  Mordheim pooches come on 20 mm basis.

Chaos Warhounds (which are much bigger) and Dire Wolves are on Cav basis.

For game play purposes Forge, I think Cav bases would be better than 25 mm bases.  Just mount two models on one base.  Same effect in terms of visuals, but easier to know what counts as a 'single model'.

It's not that hard, really.

Cult of Ulric hunting hounds should be mounted on cavalry bases, with the huntmaster on its own cavalry base. If you plan to use them as something else, mount them as you see fitting.

Mordheim warhounds come with 20mm square bases (IIRC), but I would personally them on 25mm square. For Mordheim, that is.

I have been using Mordheim War dogs as unit champions for a couple years.  I just fit them on 20 mm bases and it's a tight fit.  But I can always find a rank and file soldier that will fit around their tail.

I would find a way to fit it on a 20mm base and if necessary, have a "spacer base" behind the dog that has a soldier who is crooked or shifted to get the unit to rank up.

I also wouldn't be afraid to take the "big dog" and have him run with the cavalry!

(PS, I will have to get some of those dogs, I need more variety and my free company riff raff need some dogs).
