Troopers that have earned their promotion to greatswords.
« on: December 15, 2008, 09:42:03 PM »
Hey guys,
This thread is to share stories from games where a core soldier has done something heroic enough to earn his promotion to the greatswords.  I have two men from my army.

First is Recruit Odo Apelt.  He served in the militia archer detachment keeping an eye out for enemy troops trying to maneuver for flanks on the 3rd Nuln Greatswords.  During this, his unit bravely engaged a unit of chaos harpies who were attempting to break through to the Empire artillery batteries.  He fought with distinction having slain 2 of the fell beasts buying enough time for the cannons to take out a greater demon of Nurgle.

Second is Sergent Günter Wolfdietrich Grothaus of the 14th Talabheim Halberdier regiment.  They were on guard detail for White Wizard Matthaeus Kummer of the Light Order.  As the Heirophant began an incantation of cleaning, a block of deamonettes charged in an attempt to prevent the spell's completetion.  Keeping the mage out of harm's way as much as possible, he challenged the slaneesh herald commanding them to safeguard both his charge and his regiment.  But fortune favors the brave, and with the divine protention from a Sister of Sigmar leading the nearby 25th Spearman he was shielded from the Slaneesh herald's attacks and manged to send it back to the void.  The Heirophant managed to complete his spell successfully destroying much of the demon's ranks and with that we, the men of the Empire, were able to push the demons back in multiple engagements.

A horse archer named Seamus was flanked by a slayer.  The rest of the unit was unable to particpate in the action and Seamus and the horse were able to deflect the blows of the dwarf and struck down the stunted one.

I'm not sure that Seamus would be suited for the greatsword regiment, however.  His legs are bowed from a lifetime in the saddle.

Edit:  Blast!  I'm on the wife's account.

While I haven't named my mighty Spearmen champion, I nominated him to become not only the Greatswords, but to be the champion of that unit as well.

General of the Empire Spengler and his 3 Wizards were engaging Dark Elves.  A unit of War Witches lead by a Hag (Is that the correct name for the unit and Hero choice?) charged the unit of Spearmen holding the left flank.  The Hag issued a challenge, which was met by the Spearmen Champion (who was bravely protecting the Wizard in the unit).  The Hag, who had already suffered a wound from a Mortar, missed all of her attacks against the Spearmen champ.  The champ, in return, hit and wounded with both attacks and no saves were made.  The next round of combat, the Spearmen champ challenged the Witch's unit leader and also killed her.  With both the hag and the unit champion killed, the witches turned tail and fled, only to be run down by the Spearmen unit.

Every game since that I've played against that DE player, I've fielded that spearmen champ as the champion of the Greatswords.  It hasn't worked out that well since, however.

Heh, well a horse archer wouldn't be an empire soldier anyways.  Perhaps can seek promotion to one of the more elite Kislev cavalry.

And yeah Mathi that was my opponent's comment thus how this thread got started. ;)

Many moons ago, back during 6th edition, there was this detachment of swordsmen who were protecting a unit of handgunners.   They were led by "Pops"  a grizzled vet who had long served but never been a hero.  In a bloody battle vs. the skaven of clan skryre (yes a 6th SAD skaven army :icon_rolleyes:) his detachment was hit by warp lightning from a vile warp-lock engineer.  The whole unit was killed to a man with the lone exception of Pops who somehow managed to survive.  Enraged and wanting revenge he defiantly passed his Panic Test and was made even better alone than he was in a detachment since he was now a lone model.  He could march back in those days, and not be targeted if near a friendly unit and not the closest target.

So he maneuvered out into the battle, march blocking the skaven for 2 turns before charging into the flank of the unit of clan rats that was guarding the particular engineer who had laid his comrades low.  He put himself in base contact with the dirty rat-mage (the WLE was on the corner of the unit that he charged and had done a wound to himself with WL) and he stabbed the bastard in his side with his short thrusting sword, dealing the final wound the the creature.  Nobody else could strike back against him (didn't have to maximize contact in those days), and he failed his break test and got away safely back to camp where he waited for the rest of the army to join him later.

Heh, that story reminds me of a WD battlereport, back at the beginning of 6th edition, where it was Empire vs Orcs, and a lone Freecompany soldier (after his unit was killed by Orc magic), ran towards the Orc Shaman who killed his unit.  The Orc shaman wasn't in a unit, so the Freecompany soldier charged him, but not before march blocking various orc units.  Safe to say, the Empire man got his revenge.

I unfortunately don't have any soldiers worthy of becoming a Greatswordsman yet though. :icon_cry:

There was even a bit of fluff asfter the battle where some dude offers him a commission to the greatswords, and hes like "nahhh" then drinks some beer.

Victor Smitt Standard bearer for the Averland 29th Swords regiment. The battle did not go well against the Woodelves. The Woodelves launched an Hail of doom + 40 Glade guard shots at the unit after the dust had settled only Smitt and the company sergeant were left standing. Bravely the pair pushed onward toward the enemy. They were ambushed by 5 Woodelf Wardancers, with a strange dance they cut off the head of the sergeant but Smitt feeling the power of Sigmar within him stuck back killing one of the dancers. Holding his ground the next attack came in, each of the dancers having multiple strikes at him. Again he was able to hold his ground but is strength was failing and he was unable to wound the elves this time. This continued for three round until the Woodelves and Empire forces withdrew, leaving Smitt standing with the company's banner held high.
"We fight them with our steel, we fight them with our courage, but above all we fight them with our faith in Sigmar!"

For me, a unit merely surviving the damn battle is on the way to great things.

Unless they ran away.
Isn't that right, General von Kreighaus and the Inner Circle Knights of The Silver Lance.....

Congrats Eight.  Heh Farmer, Victor Smitt's story sounds like it got right pulled out of the fluff ;).

The current musician for the 3rd Talabheim Greatswords, Alfred Schlottmann, is known for his talent being the key to repelling a unit of boar boys who broke through and were in the flank of his unit, the 17th Swordmen, threatening to tear them up.  His work was noted by his commanding officer, General Erwin Friessner, who was in the unit and injured during that particular engagement.  Schlottmann's promotion came after a second commendation where his music managed to rally the his men to finish off a unit of Khorne bloodletters.

Well, I must think if I got those kinds of models.
Well, there are a few WE ones, my old school Wardancer unit lead by Bigwigh (the old wardancer champion) have done some measly stuff on occasions, but they have done some utterly glorious stuff aswell, like slaying a TK with chariot bodyguard and a Tomb prince in the same fight.

But I am still waiting to see the true heroics from my Empire lads, but when the first 1500 points are ready for battle, we will see what comes!  :icon_mrgreen:

Bob of the 33rd Nordland handgunner detachement finished of a bloodthirster wounded by 2 cannonballs in the head after seing his comrads mowed down in one sweap and fleeing from the carnage with his brother Shitaspunts. For his insane bravery and unheard of aim with a handgun, he was later promoted to captain by Emperor Karl Franz himself.

My outrider champion of the pistoliers!

One of my first battles versus high elves. By turn 3, his 4 friends had been shot dead by some stupid scouts. Being the only person left of the unit, nobody paid attention to him. My adversary, however had decided to take his lvl4 wizard with the book of hoth out of his spearmen block, before that saw combat.
                      x                                  wiz

            ....................                     woods
     ..............................
              o                                         champ
My champion saw his shot at glory and moved through the woods. He then unleashed his volley of 4 deadly pistol shots, all of which wounded and killed that nasty general dead.

And 2 weeks ago, he and his unit were charged by a unit of kroxigors. They could only stand and shoot, fleeing would lead to the kroxigors getting in combat with my main block. All his friends were wiped out, so he was outnumbered. He then proceeded to roll the snake-eyes, denying the enemy the overrun, allowing me to charge them after the next combat phase  :icon_lol: :icon_lol:
