Solland and Darkwald
« on: December 29, 2008, 09:27:41 AM »
Does anyone know what the provincial colours of Solland and/or Darkwald were? Thats assuming it is mentioned in GW's fluff for the Empire. If you do it would be much appreciated!

I dont know about Drakwald but if you read the book RuneFang you'l be able to get the colour scheme for the Knights of the Southern Sword, they were a knightly order based in Sollands capital. Also if you read Beasts in Velvet from the Genervieve novel you'l be able to get some idea for state colours becouse there is a character in there who should by blood be the Elector Count of Solland during the raign of Karl Franze.

Hope that helps, Captain Gerntass

I don't remember any mention of colors for Count von Mecklenburg.  He was a Sudenlander, though.

It describes his coat of arms, it is a shame realy, GW should have really given us a little more detail for the fuff on Solland.

Solland was only created for it's destruction, though.  And in our current timeline it's already been lost for around 800 years.  There really is no reason for them to go into any detail.  And though they describe the crest, there still is no color combination mention, to my recollection.  Besides Solland and Sudenland are different provinces.

I hope we dont get into some kind of argument here wissenlander, i did a lot of research when i tried making a Solland army years ago, plus i was reading Beasts in velvet and Runefang last night to make sure i was right, the people that inhabit the lands that use to be Solland calls that area Sudenland becouse they resent the fact that wissenland claimed the realm of Solland when no heir could be found after Gorbads invasion.

No argument intended, but believe me I've read a lot of stuff as well.  But I've not read Runefang, and won't dispute that there may be information in that that is of help.  You may be right about the color scheme in Beasts and Velvet, but I don't remember there being a color description.

And the tenuous tie between Sudenland and Solland is just that.  In one line in the new army book it says that the old Sollanders call the area Sudenland because it's some sort of defiance.  I think it's cool that they try to rectify the situation, because often times GW fluff doesn't even bother to mess with it.  But in my mind's eye, they're two different entities.

There are similarities, it is true, the capital the same and the locations being relatively the same as well.  So if people want to equate them as the same, that's fine, but I won't.

It's good to see, though, that Sollanders hold grudges more fiercely than Dwarfs.  I think the part in Sigmar's Heirs about the lamentations of Wissenlanders for the fall of Solland is quite interesting.  And something that most Sollanders would ignore.

Please, please, please do not quote the often random musings of fiction authors when trying to establish the history of the Empire, it's no more valid than any idea you or I might have

Personally I went for red and green for the livery of Solland based troops.

Solland is 800 years dead now, but does that matter? Not a jot (just ask many Balkan states how long they hold grudges for)

We go to gain a little patch of ground that hath in it no profit but the name.

It doesn't matter, I just like having some fun with you guys.  Though your statement on the authors is very much appropriate.

Why did you choose red and green, Uryens?

umm... considering the Empire it self is a fictional creation, it's kinda impossible to trace its "history" without referring ultimately to a fiction author of some sort... :engel:

(that said, your point is well taken that you pay attention to who the particular fiction author you are citing is and under what authority (s)he is creating the "history" cited)

Both the last Solland and Drakwald Elector Counts are both mentioned in the current Empire army book underneath the rest of the provincial Elector Counts.

Wissenlander i have just read a thread that you have done that describes what you have done for your army, the background and all that, i have also read the story you have done about the siege of Brennenburg, that story, all i can say is wow you did one hell of a good job, there is only one word that i think that really describes you my friend and that is hardcore.

Hi,

I did a lot of reading and looking before starting my army. Could not find any references to the colour of Solland. But in a lot of ways this was one of the best things about putting the army together - I could invent my own and story ...

There was a lot of references to the sunny nature of the province though - good for agriculture, good for farming etc. I thought that the colour orange (blazing sun) would make a good colour scheme for pre-invasion solland. Inspired by the story of the carroburg greatswords, I also felt that the Solland troops that remained / aspired to Solland rising again would modify the scheme to represent being overrun by the orcs. Hence I went for a quartered scheme of green and orange. Orange for the original colour of Solland, and green to symbolically represent the fact of the orc invasion - I can imagine my troops swearing that only after Solland is reformed and every orc removed will they take the green quarters off their uniform.

No basis for the above other than my imagination, but I think its reasonable as far as fluff goes ...

That's some prety darn imagination there Sollond's heir, when i first started whfb i was wanting to do a Sollond army but back then i couldn't find much so i decided on using green with another colour as green is my favourite colour but also green sort of represents farming and the likes.
Tell you summit though, i would like to see a thread in the welcome section for all us Solland Generals wth the rest of the Provinces, heck, it could be called "The Province of Solland of Olde"
What do you think?, we could work out the State colours on what every one agrees on.
Well we can wish, but it is a possibility.

Why did you choose red and green, Uryens?

It fitted in with some fluff I read somewhere, though I cant remember where now...seemed to be a good coulour scheme for this old region at the time, and it looks quite nice to me

But Red and Green are already claimed by Hochland! I thought of Green and White like the Stir River Patrol, but thats just me. This thread has generated some good discussion, but it is all about Solland. Anything about Darkwald?

Well mine were painted before GW started fluffing their state militias and giving them civic colours and such like, so I claim precedent
