Lorindinger, Wissenland (Barony of Brennenburg) IC 2524

Standing in the midst of the small town center, Sergeant Manfred Spieledichter looked around him as the crowd assembled.  He stood on top of the cart that had brought him to the town from Brennenburg.  The driver ignored all around him besides the insects, and he swatted flies quietly to himself.  Behind Spieledichter stood two of his brethren, other greatswords, garbed in their finest armor to display the power of the Graf.  And sitting atop their horses behind the cart were six road wardens, escorts.  It was best to have this showing, one never could tell how a decree, such as the one he was about to give, would be received.

Clearing his throat, Spieledichter raised a parchment to eye level and began to read:

“By order of the Countess, every able bodied man is to report to their militia under ‘Appell der Soldaten.’  Any who disregard this decree will be seen as a traitor to the crown and will be imprisoned until such time as the judgment of execution may be rendered.”

The greatsword sergeant lowered the parchment and returned it to the haversack at his side.  He looked upon many morose faces.  It was apparent they did not understand the purpose of the mustering.  And this was more than just a normal call for training.  Olenbay’s greatswords never stopped by for those sorts of announcements.

The Sergeant realized that these musters were often pointless, for militia gatherings were often sporadic and unless the men had something tangible to fight for, would not show.  Usually, nothing would be done about it, but much depended upon the seriousness of the threat, and how hostile the Countess was towards uninterested third parties she would consider ‘traitors.’

“Report to Brennenburg in two days,” Spieledichter said softly, as he understood the magnitude of the situation.  The very thought sickened the sergeant, civil war, and he found it too painful to pass along the news to his countrymen.

“Why should we,” shouted one man, with a leather apron around his neck.  His barrel chest and thick arms, combined with the apron gave him away as a blacksmith.  “We have no allegiance to your Graf,” he belligerently continued.

“We are not debating this today,” Speledichter replied.  The complexities of allegiance were always tangled when it came to the free villages.  “There is one thing you can be assured of, however, and that is you all have an allegiance to Wissenland,” he said scanning the crowd for more malcontents.  “Now enjoy the company of your families, and report to Brennenburg in two days,” he said again, the sadness in his voice quite apparent.

“Let’s move out,” he ordered to the other men around him.

If anybody wants, I'll search again and post links.

Some lovely figures there, just read the item description though, some of them could well be too large to rank up with GW things.

Winters Teeth Pass, Border Princes IC2524

It had been a hard treck through the pass, pushing the Ogres to move as fast as they could, making sure they had enough ale and wine to keep them happy, but not so much they wrought havok in their drunkeness but now on the southern slopes of the mountains they could see the smokey smudge in the sky above where Mortensholm lay.

Uryens clenched his jaw, before angryly issueing the orders to send pistoleers to scout the disposition of the town.

Castle Hill, 5 miles south of Auggen, 2524IC

Castle Hill in the predawn light looked silent, no lights, no movement and no visible sentries. The walls that were under construction were under a constant guard, although from ground level across the river no one would realise by looking at it. The area south of Castle Hill was constantly patrolled by mounted spearmen and handgunners, on the north side of the river Soll, huntsmen and pistoliers watched up and down the river ways while in the areas east and west of the hill men kept a sharp look out with telescopes.

A soldier dressed in Stattenland colours stood observing the surrounding lands on a nearby hill when he saw a dark figure moving from brush to brush on the other side of the river, he was heading towards the single rope that allowed access from the opposite shore. The guard instantly tensed but relaxed when he realised that the only ones who knew about the rope were men from Stattenland working on Castle Hill, every morning the rope would be untied from the last returning night watch patrol as they swam back across.

The man frantically swam across holding the rope and attempted to sprint up the slope, the men of the 8th spearmen and 24th swordsmen had done their jobs well though and he was reduced to a crawl up the steep slope and over the breastworks. When he got to within shouting distance of him, Maxamillian pushed his spear forward and declared:
"Halt, this is the property of the soldiers of Stattenland, who are you and what is your business?"
"Max its me you goblinlicker, Gerhardt, I bring an urgent message for the Lord Contyre, where can he be found?"
"Sorry Gerhardt but I'm on night duty now, I have to say it. Lord Contyre is working on the breastworks on the hill top." Max pointed back up the hill behind him.
"By the gods I'd hate to attack this place once we are done with it." Gerhardt said and began jogging up the hill once more.

Derek looked over his soldiers digging in the mud, they had worked all through the night to get this section of the wall finished and he had been there helping every step of the way.
"Soldiers," he raised his voice in order for his men to hear him, "Men of the fifth, seventh and fourteenth, your work for tonight is over, now lets rest and drink some of our beer, for tomorrow we can sleep."
The men cheered and began breaking out foodstuffs where they sat. spears and swords were lain aside or placed in scabbards while the men broke the ten hour fast they had endured.
Derek broke bread with his soldiers not at a table laden with finery but amongst his rank and file troopers.
It was here were Gerhardt found his lieglord, covered from head to foot in mud and dirt, he looked a comic sight.
"Sire, news from Meissen, the countess Emanuelle has called up her soldiery and militia's, there is word going round she knows of the rebellion they are. . "
"Gerhardt, it is no rebellion, this is a chance for the nobles here to regain their ancestral titles, I will not have it referred to as a rebellion. Even I have bought land here, south of Castle Hill is where our new wheat farms are situated, they will feed our people in Stattenland so the famine will not strike us hard next year."
"Sorry milord, there have been reports that the Countess has spies amongst us, learning our whereabouts and our plans, I estimate it will take several months for their armies to muster in a single place."
"This bears thinking about, Captain Ludwig, who is your fastest rider?"
"Sebastion, my lord, took the message from Nueremburg to Statten in one day." The message was commonly known throughout Stattenland as a magnificent feat of riding skill, a single man, when the orc invasion struck Nueremburg, took a single horse and galloped from one end of Stattenland to the other in a single day to bring word of the attack to Derek and the Hamburgian guard which was doing training there.
"Ah yes, the message, Ludwig, send him south after Richter and give him the message which we have heard, tell him to ride like the heels of the invasion were upon us again." Ludwig hurried off and the other men broke out in talking.
"There will be no wine tonght men, and only a single mug of beer, no noise at all in the camp, I need to mull things over." Derek left his men and retreated to his tent, "Maybe things will be clearer in the morning." He said to himself before hitting his pillow and falling asleep.

Wusterburg, Spring IC2524

The younger Uryens de Crux, Baronet von Kell, gathered up the bundle of letters from his father and handed them to the rider.

"George, take these north to Derek Contyre at Auggen, along with our greetings and salutations, from their go north again to Bogenhafen, there you will present this letter to one Master Loftwick, a master archer and bowyer of that town.

Let no one stop you on your journey, and when north of Auggen tell no one you are in the Barons pay."

"It will be done my lord, I will be in Bogenhafen by the weeks end."

With that the rider pulled his wide brimmed hat down onto his head, buckled up his buff coat and pulled himself onto his horse, with a last salute to the Baronet he galloped down the road north out of Wusterburg.

North of Mortensholm, Border Princes IC2524

Uryens watched as Captain van Rooyen too the report from his roadwardens, they had heard sounds of combat about half an hour earlier, probably pickets and scouts making contact.

van Rooyen shook the hand of the roadwarden sergeant and strode over to Uryens.

"Sir, it seems that the town has been attacked by some force, we are not sure who, but it seems like some other would be prince, the town has fallen but there is still a garrison holding up inside the main keep at the centre of the town."

"Well then, my good Captain, we must do our damndest to lift this seige as soon as possible." replied Baron de Crux.

"Pass word to the company captains and sergeants, we will advance in column of attack, with a skirmish line of archers and duellists in front of us, send the roadwardens and scouts out again, find their baggage train as soon as possible, tell whoever finds it to report to me immediately."

"Aye my Lord" replied the Marienberg captain before rushing off to issue orders.

Hugo and Ludwig arrived at the town of Moslac, and were stunned at the sight.  Hundreds of men in bold orange and red were setting up earthen and wooden barriers, digging in for a siege and bombarding the town.  Just beyond their camp was a sizable chunk of the Legion's might, ready for war and with the steam tank!  The General had declared war and made a strong first move in their absence, and they could not understand why.  It was clear from the banners on the walls that Moslac had fallen to some other force in the Borders, but the Dawnstriders had been neutral at the time they left.  Whatever happened had happened quickly for the General to both declare war and take the offensive; it was their preference to conduct a defensive campaign whenever possible.
     "Whaddya make of that, Hugo?"
"That's an odd sight...wonder who those fops in the red are, eh?  Not going to blend well into the woods when you're a damned sunrise unto yourself."
"Never seen anything like it.  Reminds me sort of Tilean swashbucklers, the bold look, but the colors are wrong."
"Yeah, plus their duelists like lighter stuff.  That's some heavy plate backing up those absurd things."
"Well, I suppose we ride ahead?"
"Yep.  Gotta get this letter to the General quick; the army's gotta be hot on our heels by now."

25 Miles north east of Wusterburg, Late spring. IC 2524
The third day out from Castle Hill saw Richter pass a bend in the river Soll and come down on the southern shore, opposite Eppiswald, he had ridden hard for two days and the first night, his mission was to bring news of the skirmish between the ogres north to Lord Contyre and to see how long it would take before the allies turned north again.

The nights passed quickly and he was on the move again, this time he took a direct route across country towards Wusterburg.
While Richter was galloping he saw a shape of a horseman on the road coming towards him.
He halted his horse and waited for the man to reach him. Thinking him to be a bandit he drew his sword and waited.
George came flying up the road on his horse, he nearly didn't see the captain waiting in the middle of the road with his sword drawn and at the last second he drew his horse to a stop.
"Your business sir, if it is north I may have tidings and directions for you seeing as I seek your master." Richter declared, noticing the colours of his heraldry.
"Declare yourself sir, I have important business with the Lord Contyre of Stattenland who has taken up a defencive postition in Auggen." replied George.
"You are lucky you found me, I am Captain Richter von Nueremburg, I have the ear of Count Contyre in all busines with the south. If you had travelled to Auggen you would of missed him by a league or two to our enemies favour, he is deployed with his army at Castle Hill, the hills on he southern side of the fork in the River Soll."
"I am George, I have urgent messages for Count Contyre, I am indeed lucky I found you Richter, if these fell into Wissenlander hands then some of our plan will be revealed, these are documents retaining to the new supplies being sent to your master in the north." George shook the tightly wrapped and bound leather documents and placed them in a secure location in his saddle bag.
"I shall let you pass sir, and give the Lord Contyre word of my passing, he will be relieved to know I am half way there."

As the pair made to split up, another horseman came over the horizon, he was flying like the winds of death were upon him. The two couriers stopped and stood up in their saddles to gain a better look, The man looked haggard and exhausted, his horse had slowed to a trot and as it reached the two he fell off straight into the dirt. Richter leapt of his horse when he noticed the Stattenland colours on his jacket.
"Soldier, are you hurt whats the matter?"
"M-message for you sir." he stammered.
"Well what is it man?"
"Its in my saddle bags Captain."
Richter stood up and rummaged around in the horses travel bags until he found a note sealed wth wax. Ludwigs smooth writing drew his attention:

Captain Richter,
Wissenland troops spotted.
The armies of the Countess are gathering.
Soldiers needed north.
Several months at least before any attacks can occur.
Notify the allied generals.

Ludwig.

Richter looked up at George and down at the new man.
"George head north immediately, there is great happenings north over the river."
"Sebastion stay here and await my return, I shall most likely be several days or a week. Actually meet me in Wusterburg, I don't know what will happen over the pass." And with that the three men parted ways. George went north towards the river Soll and Castle Hill, Richter went south along the river towards Kreutzhofen while Sebastiontrotted south towards Wusterburg to await Richter on his return journey.

Wissenburg, Wissenland (Wissenguard Chapterhouse) IC2254

“Have you seen the reports, father.”

“Aye, Karsten,” began the Grandmaster of the Knights Wissenguard, with a low gravely voice.  “I have seen the reports.  Something I had feared for far too many years.  A fear passed down to me by my predecessors.”

“Shall we assemble the Order, sire,” the young seneschal asked, seeing the look of pain upon his father’s face.

“No, not yet,” the old man snapped, as if he was shaken from a deep thought.  “The threat is not, yet, fully materialized.  We need our forces to be able to react to anything.  Assembling them too early will prove foolish.”

“Yes, sire,” Karsten bowed.  “What word should I give to the other chapters?”

“Pfeildorf must be on full alert, for it is the former capital of Old Solland,” the Grandmaster thought aloud.  “The other brothers know what needs to be done.”

“Yes, sire,” Karsten again replied.

Mortensholm, spring IC2524

Uryens watched as the Grand Army of Solland began to deploy into attack columns.

"Captain Jamie" shouted Baron de Crux, looking round for his ensign.

"Jamie, take a flag of parlay to the town and tell them that by order of the Baron of Wusterburg the forces seigeing Mortenshoom are to quit the town by nightfall, they can retain their colours and arms and leave peacefully. If they remain, they shall be hanged as bandits and thieves."

Wusterburg, Spring IC2524

Uryens, Baronet von Kell, studied the reports from the north of Auggen. So, Baroness von Leibewitz had caught wind of what was happening and was determined to make traitors of them all.

Quickly he penned a letter, and bid a roadwarden ride south with it to Scharmbeck...

To Baron Eduard Driesch:

My Dear Baron,

It seems that the Baroness von Leibewitz has seen fit to declare those who oppose her as traitors, I would suggest that perhaps now is the time to make our intentions plain and show the Empire that we are anything but traitors.

Additionally I also intend to cross the river with men under arms and secure the towns of Bedernau and Hornfurt.

The Town of Moslac, Central Border Princes, IC 2524

The city was alight with fires, and the strange men in orange and yellow had assaulted the town along with the sizable Dawnstrider force.  Hugo and Ludwig made their way past the ruined gates, torn asunder by some behemoth force that left its mark upon the cobblestones and less fortunate buildings.  Both men wore their tabards and were neither stopped nor questioned until they bumped into a man in full plate armor riding on his own barded horse.
"Hold!  Who are you two?  Why aren't you in ranks?" the rider demanded.  Both men snapped out salutes and answered nearly in unison.
"Sir, Huntsman Ludwig Hasselbeck, returning from long range scouting duty sir!"
"Sir, Huntsman Hugo Margrave, returning from long range scouting duty sir!"  The man dismissed their salutes, and Ludwig presented a sealed missive from his saddlebags.
"Sir, I bring an urgent message for the General.  He must read it immediately!"  The man nodded, taking the message and then pointed to a man in gunpowder-stained green clothes and a sooty leather vest sitting on some rubble, his head bandaged.
"Report to Marshall Brimcon, and he'll deal with you from here."  The rider turned and rode a short ways down the road, leaving Hugo and Ludwig to dismount and give their full report to a dazed Brimcon, who nodded along and made note of things to ask them again once he felt better.  The rider tapped Arathos on the shoulder with the missive, who glanced over his shoulder.  "Message for you, sir."  Arathos took the letter that Nathaniel had entrusted to his scouts, and broke the seal, reading it just before his men began their charge into the town's main square.

Wusterburg Ferry, Spring IC2524

Uryens von Kell looked out at his troops, they were good men, huntsmen, militia, roadwardens and a few adventuring bands that had signed up with them, but that did also mean a priestess of myrmidia and a wizard was in his forces.

He had none of the heavy troops that he might have wanted, but they were in the south with his father, still, it would be enough to secure the hamlets on the other side of the river without too much problem, meaning the road was secured, and the river crossings were secured.

By now the annoncement of Baroness von Liebewitz would be pinned up on the market posts, but there would be little in the way of troops there yet.

He checked his brace of pistols and his volley gun before speaking to the troops crowded onto the river docks.

"Right men, this is not an all out assault, we are not going to loot, but to protect the people of this town, though they may not know it or want it. Treat them with kindness and gentleness, rember the articles of war of the Army of Solland

'We give express charge, that in our marches through the country, there be nothing compelled from the villages, nothing taken but paid for, none of the villagers upbraided or abused in disdainful language;for when lenity and cruelty play for a kingdom, the
gentler gamester is the soonest winner.'

Now, let us discharge our duty, and secure these towns."

With that, the troops boarded a flotilla of small river boats and the ferry, and began to pull hard across the river to the far bank.

Richter rode hard past Wusterburg, trusting Sebastion to give them the message, he rode untill nightfall then ate a cold meal without lighting a fire for fear of spies and slept fitfully, waking up sometimes during the night.

The next morning he rode south west again, following the river Soll untill he could see the town of Kreutzhoven. He stopped at the inn for the night and ate a meal in a cubicle by himself. The night passed slowly and only a couple of dozen patrons entered but the talk was of the army moving south with the ogres, to the border princes and to war.
Richter sunk in his seat and listened more.

River Soll, Bedernau & Hornfurt, Spring IC2524

The early morning attack on the two villages of Bedernau and Hornfurt had gone almost bloodlessly, one member of the village militia in Bedernau had failed to understand that a score of archers is overwhelming odds for a single spearman

Still, it was one death too many for small villages like these.

Now though Uryens von Kell was gathering supplies from the village and having proclamations posted in the village squares that they were now under the protection of the Baron of Wusterburg.

Given that the announcement also included a notice that there was to be no new raising of taxes, most of the locals seemed to be not bothered to much, of course there were those minor gentry who thought they owed something to either the Baroness Delbruck or Baron Heidegger respectivly that were making protests, but given the presence of three score archers and militia in the local area, there was little for them to do but accept the change.

Now though the forces of the Baron of Wursterburg controlled both banks of the Soll and the river crossings for several miles now, greatly adding to the defence of the locale.

Soll River, Late Spring IC2524

It was a bright sunny day, and the sun was sparkling on the surface of the swift flowing river, were it not for the number of armed men and river boats it would be an idylic scene.

Things were quiet at the moment, but Uryens von Kell knew that wouldnt last, but, for now, the longer the Wissenlanders waited, the stronger the Solland cause would be, and the stronger their defences would be.

But, it was good weather, the men were in fine mood and so why not enjoy this phoney war.

The young Baronet's thoughts turned south, to his father and the bulk of the army, wondering just what was going on in Mortensholm, and when they might expect to see them back again.

Willard had found Lector Raphael von Mauchen in the Eppiswald Grand Garden again.  Things seemed to be coming along nicely, as was some how almost always the case each year in the Grand Garden.  However, it was the things taking place outside the Garden that weren’t quite as comforting to Willard, nor likely for the Lector either.

“So, what you are saying, Willard, is that acts of piracy, banditry, and bribery, have turned into territorial takeover and defense building, all, as you know, not something that has been approved of by the Countess?”

“Yes Father.  Lithrum and Marius have reported forces from Wusterburg moving into and taking over the towns of Bedernau, Hornfurt, and Kell, while Gunther and Petrio have followed those soldiers that I mentioned during my last report, to Wusterburg, and then to the hills that are about 25 miles north of Trulben, in which there are defensive positions clearly being built.”

“Is this isolated to only Baron de Crux’s forces, and what of these soldiers that have been moving through Wissenland from elsewhere in the Empire?”

“At the Mitterdahl Festival in Wusterburg, there were representatives from Kreutzhofen, Scharmbeck, Nehren, and what was most surprising, the Dutchess of Arnalos, the Mayors of Mortensholm and Arkendorf, and even a general from the Helenic League.  Gunther and Petrios identified those soldiers, that they’ve been keeping an eye on, as being from some place called Stattenland, up north on the Talabec River.”

“Stattenland?  Hmmm, you know what I need regarding this, correct?”

“Yes, and I’ll be personally researching this in our library later this afternoon.”

“So we have Pfeifraucher, Dreisch, De Crux, Mecklenburg, someone from a place called Stattenland, and what were all of those Border Prince leaders doing here?”

“Uh, Father, I’m not sure how to tell you this, but, uh, it seems that the rumors are true.”

“I see.  So we have those claiming Solland descent collaborating with Border Prince folk, who seem to be interested in meddling in Imperial matters, both groups wanting to exert a bit more influence over lands rightfully owned by others?”

“Yes, I’m afraid so, your eminence.”

“And what of Baroness Toppenheimer’s representive, Leopold von Bernau?”

“He, too, was seen in Wusterburg, but my informant in Pfeildorf has mentioned seeing him return, and this same source mentioned Von Bernau had a meeting with Sebastian Kerputz from Nuln, who was also present at the gathering in Wusterburg.  We have nothing further at the moment regarding this.”

“Hmmm.  Well, where Sebastian Kerputz goes, you know what else often comes of that?”

“Unfortunately, yes Father.”

Then the Lector paused, and seemed to stare out into the garden for a brief moment of contemplation before continuing.  Willard stood, moving his eyeballs back and forth between the Lector, and the Eppiswald Grand Garden, waiting for Von Mauchen to finish his thinking.

“Ok Willard, here is what we need to do.  First and foremost, I will write a note to the Countess, and you need your best and fastest messenger to attend to this tomorrow morning.  Second, you need to send other messengers to Erbshausen, Halgerbach, and Staig with the exact same message, and with orders to pass this along to the Countess, as we would in any emergency situation, and as we seem to be facing here in Wissenland currently.  They will all no what needs to be done from there.  Third, I want your informant in Pheildorf to contact Kerputz, and we need to make things difficult for him, understand?”

“Yes, Father, completely.”

“Oh, and one more thing, Willard, do you know whom else you need to contact for me on your way to the library?"

"Yes, Father, I’ll be certain to let Marshal Augustus Trapien know you want to see him.”

“Excellent, and that’s exactly why I have you in my service, Willard.  Keep me posted on whatever else your informants come up with next.”

Willard bowed ever so slightly, and hurried on and out of the Eppiswald Grand Garden.

Just south of Mortensholm, IC 2524

"What are they doing?"  Ludwig sighed, setting down the spyglass.  He did not like this, being sent back North while sleep deprived, and weary.  He wasn't even sure who they were spying on from their hiding places, though he could guess they were the Black Company.  Heads were being put onto pikes on the road, and the last few men had finished their grisly task and were riding away.
"I am so tired of this, Hugo.  I'm going to sleep for a week when we get back to Schwarzbaum."
"At least we're away from those-" the sound of a tree snapping to the North startled them, and they hurriedly switched positions.  Ludwig raised the spyglass to his eye, and saw what was just ahead, more specifically what was just between them and their goal, the gates of Mortensholm.  They both spoke the next word simultaneously: "Ogres."  There was a long pause as they watched, and considered what to do next.  "I'm not going over there, Ludwig.  I'm not going to wind up in a stew pot!  I've got kids to feed!"
"You don't have any kids, Hugo."
     "I should."
"Quiet, we're not getting anywhere by panicking.  We can't hide here, they'll eat us for sure if we do and they find us.  They're mercenaries, so we'll just present ourselves, and pray to Morr they listen to their food before they eat it."
"Oh, why didn't I think of that?  We'll just reason with the ogres, that's a grand idea Ludwig.  Maybe afterwards we can all make daisy chains, and-" the thump of boots hitting grass interrupted him.  "Hey, get back up here!"
"No.  I'm not going to listen to your whining Hugo, we've got a job to do.  We're dead if we don't try, so you can either complain up there till one of them eats you, or you can take your ogre-dealing like a man."  With that, Ludwig strode off towards Agrabog's ogres to present himself and ask permission to pass through to Mortensholm.  It wasn't but a moment before the sound of boots running on grass could be heard, and Hugo was behind him.
The first school of thought is that the ragged-assed Stirlanders, not having two coppers to rub together, nicked it when an elven envoy was passing through the area and had hopped off it to take a pee behind a tree

Richter rode hard through winters teeth pass, his horse was hardy and would not tire soon. He had seen smoke rising on the horizon for some time now and it was almost relief when a shout for 'halt who goes there' calls out.

"It is I Captain Richter von Neuremburg come with urgent message from the Lord Contyre at Castle Hill in the north.
"Where can I find Barons de Crux and von Pfeifraucher?"
A man dressed in the tabards of Solland emerged from some rubble near the wall of the pass.
"Captain they are south besieging the town of Mortensholm, some fiends have ridden against our allies while they were at the council in Wusterburg weeks ago."
"Curse it." Richter rode hard not knowing what he would find, but the smoke got thicker as was the smell of burning and the sounds of gunfire.
A man who builds his army around his fluff . . . respect . . .  :::cheers:::
