Topic: Nordland army of Brogilo - painting blog (update 12-08-2013)

No better place to start a painting blog than, here with fellow Empire men and women.

I have been painting for quit some time now, and finally some of them are finished.
To get more painting going, I thought "well why not start a blog here, maybe this will push me more to keep painting and finish my army.
Well it's never finished off-course, new troops and hero's are being added, that's the way it is.

My Brogilo army is sited in Nordland, along the coastline near the border of the wastelands.
I used and altered the history of a Dutch town called Brielle (where I lived the last 8 years). This way I try to get a bit of a themed army.
Regarding the colors I used,  I do strayed from the regular colors of Nordland, I kept the Bleu, altered the Yellow for Bleached Bone an added Orange.

Personally, I'm no fan of orange.

But you use it consistently and with style.

Otherwise, very nice models. The touch of your brush has an air of lightness: no excess paint, smooth surfaces. I'd bet you are a fast & accurate painter - a skill I'm still practicing.

Hoping to see more. (Hint: black or dark violet would make an excellent contrast with orange - perhaps for a special unit or a detachement.)

Thanks  for the complements and I'll certainly try the dark-violet shade for orange.
And regarding being a fast & accurate. The last is definitely true, but I'm definitely not a fast painter.
I try to paint on a regularly base, cause they are used on the battle table. And playing with a painted army is much more satisfying.

I paint the basecolors, add a wash and finally use a highlight of a slightly lighter color of the basecolor. What I'm trying more is look for more distinctive shading colors (that where your tip come's in).
The only exception are flesh tones, these get some more attention.

I like the army and the colors.  I enjoy seeing different units that aren't the usual colors of some of the more common states.  I think you are off to a great start.

Especially the may you painted the horses and the white cloth on the artillary crew.
Could you explain your method for the cloth?

Hoi Borgar,

Normally I use a white basecoat and apply the base colors.
Then I use washes of a darker shade of the base color.

In fact I'm still using GW-paint and washes from the old white bottles (date back to 1996).

After the washes I highlight with a lighter shade by (extensive) drybrushing.

The cloth on the artillery crew was done in the following way:
White basecoat, Bleached Bone as basecolor, flesh wash and then highlighted in several layers, starting with bleached Bone and work this up to a lighter color by mixing Bleached Bone with Skull White.

It took same experimenting, but I'm satisfied with the result.

It has been a while, and I hoped to add some regular updates, but as in real life, things go differently.
So see this update as a new-year resolution.

My pistoliers are finished, although the bases still needs some work. (as for most of my models).

Great stuff and with the colours you used they have a very personal touch.

So take them into action and make some battle reports with pictures.

you should glue some static grass/flock/foam shrubs to your bases.

I find that basing nicely improves the overall look far more significantly than that extra highlight.

are you painting your orcses to?

Nice work but you either have a stray hair or a brush bristle came loose and it stuck in the paint on the shield of your General.

Good looking army.
I really Like the pistoleers especially the horses, and the wizards are great.

If you want on the flagellant you can try to paint the area "under" the robe black or really dark purple to indicate that it's in shade.

Pistoliers are great and I really like the almost stained-glass feel of your greatsword banner.  Nice!

Thanx for the reactions, and indeed the base need some more work. I forgot to mention that.
First some highlight over de bases and later on some static grass or some course turf from Woodland Scenics.

@ Finlay: The Orcs and Goblins are being painted as I write this reply
I'll post some pictures later on.
But I like my Empire army to be painted all the way, although with the new rules, some changes have been made, so new troops ar in the making.
Thus means, more painting.

@Fbjorn: Thanx foor the tip on the shade for my Flaggies, I'll keep that in mind next time.

Everything looks great! Nice to see another Nordland army, I can't have enough of them.
Especially like the steam tank and the pistoliers.
By the way, how many torsos are there in the pistoliers box?

Yep sorry, for the great delay, and thanx for the support.

My old camera brook down and I also like to paint my Orcs & Goblins and my 40K Imperial Guard army.
So i have to divide the time spending on painting amongst these three, and oh more are coming.

@Guildenstern:
All is painted by hand, make sure you have good brushes and the paint should be smooth running.
Only the twisted lines on my General's lance, I used narrow masking tape from pactra.

The pistoliers box containes 5 torso's and 5 sets of legs.
