Metagame tactics
« on: August 30, 2009, 12:39:42 AM »
Most experienced players know the saying 'never accept a challenge from an empire wizard'. On occasion you can use that to bluff your opponent into retiring a character for fear of getting hit by VHS. You can do something similar with the sword of fate. An opponent knowing you have the sword may go out of his way to avoid getting his monster/character into combat with the model he thinks is carrying the sword.

These are fairly blatent examples of cases where you can use your opponent's knowledge of the game against him. I'm curious about other examples where people do this, especially more subtle ones.

sure. use his knowledge of you against him. if you always pick fire lore, try beasts or shadow and do the unexpected.

Yesterday I tried something of the above- previsou games I've been known to field a balnaced force, but definately with magic and warmachines.

Knowning my dwarf opponent knew this, I gambled and went with no warmachines and no wizards (thogh I did have a priest and a capatsus with the bound spell burning head).  Burning head worked a treat as the dwarf player had used all his dice dispelling the prayer (I couldnt help but smirk when I revealed the spell as I was lined up along his lines).  Caused a few casulties and shook his line.
Overall though, I lost- his shooting was outstanding in the first few turns and decimated by statetroops.
I like throwing a few curve balls in though, get my opponent surprised and having to shift his focus- they are more likely to make mistakes than if you field the 'standard' army you do.

Obvisouly the one flaw with this is that im starting to get a reputation for curve-balls and so it is unlikely to work as well! (As long as I keep the opponent second guessing, i dont mind)

yea take 2 stanks against a bret player, once he starts using the large target KB character switch the stanks out and watch him use a useless hero.

These kind of things work against regular/semi-regular gaming partners as they pick up habits and if you're aware of your habits you can then change them.

As an O&G player field blocks of NG in as a screaning formation and run them towards the biggest unit your opponent has. People will assume you have fanatics in them and will divert shooting, magic or try and maneuver around them when really there is nothing in them.

Another that I do is put brimestone bubbles on a goblin big boss on a wolf, put him in a unit of 5 wolf rider and rush them towards something big. Then watch them die and explode.

Imho the best one is to start using green gummies to represent warpstone tokens, as you use each token pick one up and eat a gummy.

Eventually just put a pile of gummies in front of you and then wait till the magic phase and the horror on your opponents face when he sees you take out 10 warpstone tokens. then calmly eat them in your shooting phase.

That sounds very amusing.

METAGAMERS MUST BURN!!!!!!!  ::heretic:: ::heretic:: ::heretic:: .

The game's so much more fun if it's treated like a story and not a huge loophole to be exploited.

Umm...

Thinking in story terms... If you ask me, misleading the leader of the enemy army is exactly what any great general is supposed to be doing.

Surprising army compositions, changes in 'usual' tactics, unexpected equipment - I wouldn't call any of these metagamey.

If you're already burning people after these, I'd hate to see your reaction after you've read Sun Tzu  :icon_lol:

It's not so much the surprising with magic items and unusual tactics, it's more of the gummybear think Nicholas was talking about. Plus I was talking more about the name of the thread, "Metagame tactics", I was just saying metagaming sucks, not surprising your enemy lol.

I agree with Helborg. Although if your regular opponent is building armies just to kill you. Jacking with him is sometimes fun to watch.
