Simple question about banners...
« on: April 09, 2010, 11:02:42 PM »
Well, i've always painted my banners by hand, but i found some banners availible to print out, and heard that it's popular to print out banners.

My question is, how do you put these on your model? Do you print them out in real thin paper and glue them on the standard?

Or do you take thick paper, make a standard pole out of green stuff and put it on there?

I did my KotWW banner on normal A4 print paper. But it was a banner that showed both sides with a "black zone" in the middle for the fold around the banner pole. So essentially you got 2 pieces of paper glued together, and that was strong enough for me.

But where did you get the banner pole? from Green stuff? or did you cut off the original banner so just the pole was left?

It was the old banner pole from the metal figure, it was a clean pole with a topping. Didn't need to cut anything off.

But I suppose you can cut off the original banner from your models and use the left over banner pole to wrap the new banner around.

Try some brass rod if you wish for strength.

Still gonna end you if it's not a normal cross, though.

I agree with MrDWhitey, rod is stronger, and personally I found it easier to cut the banner completely off and replace the pole with rod rather than trying to cut just the banner off.

You can actually drill out the transition from banner to pole, if you know what I mean. The stuff wrapped around the pole. That should allow you to actually stick your rod through those things, which should allow for a better attachment.

The best way for banners, though, is decals.

What do you mean by Decals?

I believe he means these sort of things:

Doesn't a certain member create wonderful flag ones for empire armies?

Imperial forge, yes. I'm not sure if he;s back in business again though.

I think he is still doing them. He does paper banners as well.

They are two sided. You cut them out and glue them together. I used a thin layer of white/PVA glue. I fold & glue the banner, but leave the bits where it slides down the banner pole "dry" so I can glue it on later. After applying the glue & folding the banner, I "weave" the banner around paint bottles, dowels, pencils, etc so when it's dry, it will retain a wavy, windblown shape.

Here's a couple of pics of Imperial Forge banners I've put on some of my figures:

http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=20815.msg331647#msg331647

Someone -- I think it might also be Imperial Forge -- had a web page showing a technique for making wavy banners from plasticard and plastic tube. I've done a number of these as well, for hand painted banners. It involves carefully softening the card using heat. I held mine over a low flame on the stove, using some long pliers to keep the "pole" end straight.

You can see three of those in the "Show us your banners" thread, here:

Back to the original question regard printing out your own banners, there are a number of sites that have some available. If you're good with drawing and/or graphics software, you can also make your own. It's a similar process to the one mentioned above (glued together, etc.) I've used regular printer paper. However, before cutting them out & gluing them, I sprayed both sides of the paper with several light coats of clear spray acrylic, to seal the ink. I didn't want the moisture from the glue (which I also try not to use too thickly) to cause the ink to run.

My own home-made & home printed banners didn't look as nice as the Imperial Force banners, so I ended up highlighting them with paint. I was much happier with them after that. Just noticed I don't seem to have any photos of those. Maybe later...
