Hi there,

First post on this forum, although I've been lurking for a very long time. I must say you seem to have a great community here, one of the best in my experience, and I look forward to becoming a part of it.

Anyway, enough of the flattery...

Years ago, when I first started Warhammer, I bought the 6th Edition Starter set with my brother, and I chose the Empire. He lost interest quickly, but I added a few units to the starter set and had a small army, some of which I painted.

Here lies the question. Now, six years after starting the army, I am ready to return. However, as a fairly young kid, I butchered some of the unipose models with some truly horrific painting and basing. I wish to use these old models and the basis for my new army, but how can I remove this paint (which is fairly thick) and particularly the basing, which appears to have solidified horrifically.

I have heard of Simple Green, but despite the French sounding name, I live in the UK, and haven't see it around. Are there any alternatives? Also if anyone could suggest a way of removing the ghastly mess of gravel and flock on the models bases, that would be a fresh start.

After this is all done, I only need to decide on Reikland or Wissenland for the army, but one thing at a time...

I can also recommend Cutex nail polish remover (and a tooth/nail brush) as a good way to remove paint from both plastic and metal figures.

Boots sell bottles of it for the princely sum of £1.99 (and your models will end up smelling faintly of almonds and cleanliness...)

First off, thankyou very much for the warm welcomes, I knew my flattery would get me places quickly. 

Believe it or not, Fairy Power spray does the trick. Welcome to the forum by the way, I like your avatar! 

I might look into that, I think I might have some in a cupboard somewhere, or its only a quick walk to the local supermarket. Do you have to do anything special or does it just power through the paint? Do you need to soak or brush or both?

I wish you hadn't told me to look there, my decision is much harder now! 

EDIT: Does anyone have any advice on removing the basing, I think this might pose the biggest challenge of them all.

I used detol to strip my models.

BAsing is trickier. Probably better off just prizing the models off the base, and completely redoing it, if you can.

Removing the basing?  a really, very sharp knife or a stainless blade (completly untouched and new)... 

mind your fingers and don't cut away to much at the same time...

BAsing is trickier. Probably better off just prizing the models off the base, and completely redoing it, if you can.

Was going to suggest dettol too. Ofc this is assuming you used acrylic paint Would need something stronger for enamel.  Dettol works well, even watered down to say 50/50.  Put some figures in a tub for 24hrs, then scrub with an old toothbrush in some warm (but not hot) soapy water.

Read a few places that say that its the pine nut oil in dettol that does the trick and other people suggesting various other oils that have stripped the paint.  Dettol tends to be the most readily available and can get large quantities for only £2-3.

The base really depends on what you've done to it :p

Dettol works great (it's what I use), but simple green works better. It's available in the UK as well, just not as readily as in the US.

For basing I just use a small hobby knife and cut it all off. Cut the trooper's foot off the base first though! Don't want to make him a cripple
