Bens new idea of Borderlands awesome
« on: June 17, 2010, 05:08:07 AM »
So with the advent of 8th incoming I naturally went back to thinking about armies and what to collect next (if you've been following my threads there's been Dwarfs, Goblin Vampires and now Border Prince mercenaries!)

The premise of the list is that it's a bunch of Empire knights who during the Araby crusades transported gold and refugees (mostly gold) through the border princes into the Empire and Bretonnia, this order was commanded by an exiled Bretonian lord but followed the Empire Knightly order system in principle.

The elite of this order were known as the Wardens who carried greatweapons into battle and patrolled the various trade routes. Overtime the order has modified from it's original purpose of refugee protection to protecting merchant convoys from Ind and Cathay and has come to include a large amount of Mercenaries and other ne're do wells however the core remains these original knights (order of the dragon).

Details:
List to be written using the Bretonnian book.

Knight errant = novice's to be used exactly as detailed
Knight of the Realm = Initiates to be used exactly as detailed
Questing Knights = Wardens
Grail Knights = Elvish mercenary company, an outcast of Naggarond who failed his 1st year long slave cruise he and his retainers have relocated as far from any coastline as possible. @ WS5, str6 they match Cold One Knights exactly and with a Paladin leading them (the Elf lord) with the Mane of the Truebred they'll be str4 on the charge also matching Cold Ones.

Infantry - all the infantry shall be mercenaries so using Empire spearmen, maybe through in some other units - contemplating even a unit of Ungor spears as well.

The Inner Circle of the Order will be the knightly characters. If it is 750pts for lord and 750pts for characters then I'm planning on having 3 Lord level characters that will all be fighters so I get 250pts per lord (110 base cost) and aiming at 3-4 paladin level characters (hopefully 1 for each unit of Wardens and for my Grail Knight COK Mercenaries). + 2 mages so 6 characters gives me 125pts per character at 60 base for a paladin and 70 for a damsel.

Pegasus Knights will be the Royal Dwarf Unofficial Flying Corps and will be modified Gyrocopters

Lord on Pegasus with KB will an Empire engineer on Pikass (no fishhead but spears and mini-guns for sure).

I'm thinking I'll have a Lord with the Mousillion virture (+2WS, +1I, +1A) on mechanical steed (the unnaturalness of the steed causes other horses and men to shy away in terror hence the -1ld for all within 6"

I plan on mixing the Bret platsic knights with empire goldswords to make my Questing Knights (as you get 20 swords in each gold sword box and I can mix-match heads etc.)

I'm getting excited about this list!! haha.

Oh colour scheme the knights themselves will be purple with bright silver finishes and they'll be the Order of the Dragon (based on the medievil Order that incl. Dracula) so all shields will have a very poorly freehand painted dragon eating its own tail...

Plus I have the old Siege defenders box which incls. 2 stone throwers which imo work perfectly as a trebuchet built from material available in the Border regions.

This sounds like a well fluffed army idea. :icon_cool: :eusa_clap:

And by the way, around six months back, I base painted a box of the seige defenders equipment (still need soem painting).  It seems like some neat stuff, but I didn't see stone throwers.  Might that have been in the seige box for attackers?  Or maybe they produced more than one set, and I haven't seen what is being refered to here?

Thanks got my first box of Bret knights tonight. HK$350 up from HK$280....

The kit I have is old mid/late 90's I got them on E-bay for 15 quid (USD) together + Volkmar a while back - great bargain.

1 kit has the battering ram on this page plus another hand held ram and various ladders. http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/armySubUnitCats.jsp?catId=cat1660236

The other kit has that bucket set you can see top left, pot of boiling oil, a little catapult thing and another thing for swining rocks off the wall.

Just ignore MrDoom&Gloom. :icon_wink:

- - - - - - - - -

The one with the battering ram is the attackers seige set.  I don't have one of those, yet.

The other one is what I have and is the defenders seige set.  Just checked, and now see the one with the pile of rocks that could be used as a catapult.

screw you Mr.D my idea is awesome and I'll make it happen!  :icon_mrgreen:

Just spent the last 20 odd mins trying to find an image of the boxes I have to show you...can't find anything no matter what i type into the search.

yea my other idea for grail knights would be a stank over 9 cavalry bases on which each setion was on a base and could be removed so you'd be able to see the inside with the crew working...I sort of decided that would be TOO much work (although incredibly awesome) plus using my 10 COK is free...

You are an utter pansy and not worth my time.

Only by doing the tank would you be worth anything other than a free meal.

You know what. If do that stank then I get to chill for at least 1 whole week at your house next year when I travel to Europe for the bash.

I could explain, yet its only a hypothesis, which might be best for the Back Table anyway. :icon_wink:

Bies ... you planning to post pics here of the new army as it develops?

O in my private discussions with him on Steam or Gchat I've developed many theories...

Yea. I'm itching to go down and build my 1st batch of knights but I need to issue some orders for NWOL 1st (meanwhile my cat has given me fleas which are bloody annoying and painful, I had a tick on me this morning and I just killed 2 coakroaches which should be the spider in the corners' job. - I'm calling the pest man tomorrow).

OK serious question should I use Empire or Brets as the base for this army?

I'm contemplating empire... as well beause the theme will stay the same it's just the counts-as that will change. But I do want this to be a cavalry centric list (but hte idea of 3x10 outriders in 5x2 formations blastin the enemy T1 makes me giggle...)

hmm... but cav for empire won't be that good (at least not as a whole army like my current list- I don't think)... and i already have a 9000pt empire army.

But THIRTY OUTRIDERS!!!
