Epoxy Putty
« on: July 08, 2010, 06:43:13 AM »
As many of you use greenstuff or other Epoxy putties and I am in the market surveillance and have read an article concering epoxy 2k materials. I want to state a warning on this site. Use gloves. Many Epoxy products have the risk of causing allergic reactions. Especially if their molecualr weight in average is below 700 (easier to go through your skin). So the health risk is quite low but you can make sure that you don´t take any risk if you put on nitril or butylrubber gloves.

It is a legal grey area. By the Law you don´t have to put a warning on the stuff as long as the average weight is above 700 BUT there are articles of the European raw material suppliers of epoxids , Plastics Europe that tells its members to use gloves up to 1000 g /mol.

So I thought I give you guys a warning before you get the harm.

news to me...

been using Green Stuff & Miliput for years without gloves and no adverse effects,

It would suck to be allergic as wearing gloves (however thin) I imagine would make shaping the putty with fingers quite difficult due to the sticky/tacky nature of the substance.

I've gone hours with green stuff residue on my hands after sculpting, doing ordinary things like eating fruit or picking my nose, I don't seem to have taken any damage.

That is the tricky stuff with chemicals that work as an allergic agent or cause cancer (this stuff doesn´t...well cause cancer). You don´t burn yourself or cut yourself and sometimes you can be exposed years with no reaction.

But I strongly suggest that you wash your hands after the use (also of glue) before you eat or put your fingers into your mouth.

@ Patsy well with you we have the perfect example what can happen if you pick your nose after the use of greenstuff.

Are you referring to my sexual deviancy?

I have heard of people who've developed sensitivity to Green Stuff and other putties. They got to the point that they couldn't even use it anymore. That being said I can't imagine how you would work with any latex or nitrile gloves. I tried it once and the putty sticks to them so bad it's just not worth it. I guess my opinion would be different if I were one of the unlucky people who've developed alergies to it.

There are also skin protective soaps you can try if you can´t work with the gloves on...better than nothing I guess. Ask in your local hardware store (Baumarkt...perhaps any of the German users know a better word) they should know about epoxy stuff.

It's hard to be a sexual deviancy when you are as ugly as that chap.
Curse you and your ability to stay within the lines.

I guess I should stop keeping pieces of green stuff in my mouth to keep them soft.  :engel:

Fortunately it was only a few times, but I will be avoiding it in the future.  Thank you for the information on this.
