Just Because I Could...
« on: January 09, 2011, 05:20:29 PM »
So I was at a historical game convention in Lansing, Michigan (Spartacon) and, in my spare time between helping run a French & Indian scenario, I found a few things for sale that were of interest.  Christmas money was burning a hole in my pocket, and next thing I new, I had added about a hundred models to my Empire army.  Whoops.

Down in front is a nearly-completely-intact (only damage seems to be to the wolf-rider spears) Battlemasters set.  Too nostalgic to resist.

And behind it, three boxes of Empire State-Troop crossbowmen.  Not sure they'll all STAY crossbowmen - I've got plenty of 6th Edition arms lying about - but hey, not a bad price for the lot, so I was happy to take it.

So yeah.  Just thought I'd share my bit of happy findings with you all.

The crossbowmen come with the regular plastic sword & halberd arms. The crossbow arms are a blister pack of metal bits that are included in each box. So you should have the option to build them as any of those troop types.

Even if you don't use the crossbow arms, they should provide good material for bitz trading.

Congratulations.

Played a couple games tonight.  My poor Imperials fought to the death in the first game, and just got cut to ribbons in the second.

Still.  I'm thinking I'm going to model the troops on Fantasy bases, so I can field them in my army, but I'll also model the Battle Master stands so that the units fit on to them.  That way I won't give up one game for another...but I can still add another fifty men to my army.  :)

Really nice! Did you get a good deal on them?

Not as good a deal as I would have liked - had to outbid somebody else for Battle Masters.  That said, $80 for the lot - about 100 Empire models and the assortment of Chaos/Orcs as well - wasn't bad.  Given the minis I already had, I'll  soon have a regiment of 24 Halberdiers, a regiment of 10 Crossbowmen, and a contingent of 15 Archers.  Not sure what to do with the Battle Masters cavalry yet.  As for the "Crossbowmen," 023 is right about the mixed arms, so those could end up being detachments, a regiment, or a mix of the two.

I've got the test model for the Halberdiers done, and I'm happy with him.  The plan is to do the Halberdiers, Archers, and Crossbowmen in white with green accents (as troops of Grunburg).  The artillery crewmen...we shall see.  The knights are being combined into one unit to form the Order of the Fiery Heart (cause my Arch Lector needs a bodyguard, after all).  I have some left-over infantry from my own old set of Battlemasters, so it totals to 9 Crossbowmen, 14 Archers, and 24 Halberdiers.  There are plans to keep Battlemasters as a viable game option...I'll put up pictures as that project comes along, over in "Reikland on the Return" in the Brush and Palette.  The other 48 guys...well, no set plans for them yet.
