Athiuen's Talabheim Regiment
« on: July 03, 2011, 06:02:52 AM »
Drawing inspiration from other painting blogs on this site I decided to put together my own. Since I've been sick for over a month I've had plenty of time to sit around and do nothing but paint.

Empire was my first army and I only started collecting it early last year.  Since then my original purchase of a box of state troops has grown into an army well over 7000 points (yes in a year, they don't call it plastic crack for nothing).  However, I've very much been into playing the game rather than painting.  Painting originally bored me to tears, I hated it, I couldn't do it (I'm still crap).  But now that I've spent a small fortune on my army I feel like it's my responsibility to paint it.  Also I ran out of money for video games and other things...

So, last month's effort:
Free Company!

Ironically I started painting these guys first because they weren't state troops.  I could do whatever colors I wanted and not have to worry about uniformity.  Since I wanted the bulk of my force to look like gritty uniform soldiers outfitted in only what the state would provide, I quickly became bored with painting state troops.  They all looked the same.

The Free Company gave me an opportunity to experiment with outfitting a unit in the spoils of war.  Since I have recently also compiled a Warriors of Chaos army I had plenty of marauder shields left over.  What if...just bare with me here... what if... my Free Company had campaigned against Warriors of Chaos and picked up some loot!  Genius, I bet no-one has ever thought of anything that original.  Empire vs. Chaos.. wow i'm amazing.

Here's the filler, filled with all the look they gained from killing a few marauders.

And apparently 1 Chaos Knight, although his unit had been killed by cannons and helstorms.... and he himself was sick with tuberculosis.... (don't mention it to them).

OMG magnetised:

And from the back:

In July my focus will be:
30x Swordsmen
TGM Knights Encarmine + his unit.
50x Halberdiers
Captasus

Edit: I thought I might add in a bit about the production of each unit here.

Since my army is to be from Talabheim, my palate had to be fairly scrict from the beginning.  Red, White, Black.  Of course small amounts of brown, green, silver and even purple would be needed for belts and laurels, armor, wine and other things but the chief colors would remain mostly fixed.

I decided to add in two other colors that would feature throughout the list.  They of course were the colors of my new knights of the panther; yellow and blue.

I had originally assembled the free company as generic models, discarding the provided GW bases and using instead Gale Force Nine magnetic bases.  I heartily recommend them as they have more weight than plastic GW bases and are great for holding up metal standard bearers.  As you can see from the pics above they can be held upside down with no trouble.

When it came time to paint the unit I tried to subtly work in my colors while keeping them as an individual unit.  I wanted them to feel like a rustic, hardened mercenary company who had seen their share of wars.  Since chaos incursions into Empire lands seem so frequent I figured the company would be veterans of battle against Chaos.  I simply added shields to whatever models I could and extra weapons to those who couldn't take a shield.
For the Captain of the unit (name pending) I used a pistolier head and a marauder cape.

I picked the colors Red, Yellow and Green to be the main colors of the unit.  I began by base coating every model in Chaos Black.  I painted them with citadel foundation paints, Mechrite Red, Iyanden Darksun and Knarloc Green, and well as Calthan Brown for the belts and Boltgun Metal for armor.  I used Dwarf Bronze, Skull White, Calthan brown and Boltgun Metal for the shields.  I applied only a single coat of the foundation paints and the metals and white were done in 2 coats.
The models were then washed with Badab Black to give them a grizzled dirty look.

The filler displaced 4 of men who are going back in the bits box for now.  To model the filler I used a barrel from the cannon/mortar set as well as a chest, 2 marauder standards, one in the barrel and one with its pole cut down so make a difference in height.  I added a small pike of 3 marauder shields and added 1 chaos warrior shield and chaos knight lance.  I then propped up a shield from the GotE/CotE kit as a reward from a ranking official for their service.  There is also a weapon rack from the Helstorm/Helblaster kit.
I painted the flagged banner and the skulls in Bleached Bone and added a Mechrite Red chaos rune to it.  The other affects were painted with the same colors already used and washed with Badab Black.

I then put super glue on the bases and dipped them in citadel sand.  I washed every base heavily in Badab Black and left them to dry.  When they had dried I lightly dry brushed Bleached bone over the bases.  Again once that had dried I super glued citadel static grass in clumps.

When I originally got bored of painting state troops I thought perhaps it was the size of the model that was bothering me.  Perhaps buying a steam tank would ease my woes!  It did!  I pummeled my enemies into pulp!  Oh wait... the point of this exercise was to get something painted... FINE THEN:

Steam tank, painted near the end of last year when I started to suck less at painting:

Unfortunately I thought that GW 'ArdCoat would work well on my model.  PREPARE FOR SHINE:

The Engineer was the last thing I painted, as I almost viewed him as another state troop, thus boring:

I followed GW's guide to painting the steam tank, as found on their site.  It's now one of the few models I have that hasn't had an amazing amount of wash thrown on it.  I like the gritty dark feel that Badab Black gives a model.  Makes em look tough, like they just marched 30 god-damn miles and are dirty as hell.  Why don't you go out and buy citadel brand Badab Black wash! (Thanks for that big bag of money GW!  I spose you know it's all going back to you anyhow....)

When my army hit 5000 points, some time after the purchase of the steam tank, I was disillusioned. What could I now buy?  I owned almost every piece in the army list.  Panic set in.  'How will I get my fix now!' I screamed at a nearby duck, 'How!?'.  It didn't answer me, but a ranger quickly ran over and, after sternly telling me off, he escorted me out of the park.  While I was being dragged away I had plenty of time to think about what my next move would be.
Who, in all the Empire, wouldn't have to answer to a ranger?  Who was it that commanded supreme authority?  Karl Franz.

But I couldn't have my kickass new Emperor riding just anything, let alone a giant chicken!  So I put him on a dragon!  Whoops i mean THE Imperial Dragon, enjoy:

Still upcoming for July:
Captasus (done)
30x Swordsmen (done)
50x Halberdier 2/5 done
TGM + Knights Encarmine

The Captasus was something that i'd never even considered until I came across it on these forums and for me it really fills a hole in the empire list.  My now ex-roomate, he moved next door, is currently playing High Elves and his great eagles have been a particular pain to me.  Mobility + Cheap is great.

Now I know some of you will say 'what about pistoliers? what about outriders? what about huntsmen?'  Well to you naysayers I say only this 'Shutup.'  Yeh I know that wasn't much.  I've tried pistoliers and outriders and God knows whatever else and I just haven't enjoyed it.

So last Saturday I took my $80 and headed into my local GW and bought a Bret Pegasus Knight kit and a GotE/CotE kit and built me a Captasus.
It was great fun and I think the model turned out really well.

I spent Saturday morning painting him:

Yeh I haven't come up with heraldry for him but meh:

Are they swordsmen in the background?

I love that particular head in the generals kit and I went and counted another 3 of them in my army on random captains and unit champions.
I was able to make the remaining bits into a new unit champion for my greatswords and the new Templar Grand Master of the Knights Encarmine.

July:
30x Sworsmen (pics coming)
50x Halberdier (2/5)
Knights Encarmine + TGM (update coming)
10x Archers

The Captasus was a lot of fun to paint and model.  He was made using the GotE/CotE kit and the Bretonnian Pegasus Knight Kit.  To paint him I used Skull White, Mechrite Red, Bleached Bone, Chaos Black, Boltgun Metal, Knarloc Green, Dwarf Bronze and Elf Flesh.

To begin with I modeled the pegasus normally and base coated it in Chaos Black.  I then painted every part of its flesh with skull white.  After the third coat of skull white the flesh looked covered.  The fabric part of the barding needed only a single coat of mechrite red; the leather straps needed only a single coat of calthan brown; and the chain was dry brushed with boltgun metal.  Dwarf Bronze was applied to the plates on the side of the head and the shields on the leg bracers.  The entire model was washed down in Badab Black and then the wings and mane were highlighted with drybrushed Skull White.  The base was done with citadel sand, washed down with Badab Black, dry brushed with Bleached bone.  Static grass was added in clumps:

The Captain is detachable and was modelled using the legs and body of the pegasus knight.  He was given the lance, facial armor, head and shield form the GotE kit.  His fabric is Mechrite Red and Skull White.  His armor is Boltgun Metal with small highlights of Dwarf Bronze.  The lance shaft is Calthan Brown, the laurels are Knarloc Green and the fabric Mechrite Red.  His face is Elf Flesh and his hair is Bleached Bone.  The feathers were first painted with bleached bone and when the whole model had been washed with Badab Black the feathers were dry brushed with skull white as a highlight:

Still more to come in July:
30x Sworsmen (pics coming)
50x Halberdier (2/5)
Knights Encarmine + TGM (update coming)

Here are some pics of my Knights Encarmine.  I currently have 3 knightly orders - Panthers 16 models + TGM, Griffon 8 Models + TGM, and now Encarmine 8 models + TGM.  I've tried to kit them all out differently, the Panther with lances,  griffon with great weapons and Encarmine with 2 hand weapons.  The TGM is the only completed model so far.  The rest of the crew need a bit of detailing on the armor and horses.  The banner will remain unpainted until I get around to planning my armies standards.

I like your army alot, nice look and feel on it as if they have seen alot of combat and are very battle hardened!
Only I feel the Knights Encarmine miss some of this feeling, and I think they can do well with a bit more attention and a more divers harness instead of all red. (PS you missed a few mold lines on the horse legs)

I also added your blog to the sticky.

When I originally started putting together my state troops it was late 7th edition.  Spearmen and swordsmen were in and my first state troops were assembled as swordsmen.  With that in mind I figured I owed it to the guys to paint them.
I assembled them as vanilla state troops except for the command group which received a little more attention.  The musician received the vuvuzela from the Greatswords kit and the unit Champion is the Metal Captain model with sword and shield.

The palate was my basic state troops palate which is:
Mechrite Red, Skull White, Calthan Brown, Boltgun Metal, Dwarf Bronze, Elf Flesh and Bleached Bone.
As with all my units the standard isn't done.  I'm still crap at freehand.

Well my ex-roomate who lives across the hall is asking for a game and giving me dinner!  Lets see how they do in combat.

Edit:  I won and have filed a battle report.  Go have a look!

Still more to come in July:
50x Halberdier (2/5)
10x Archers (1/2)
Knights Encarmine update?

It has been a long time since I updated this thread.
Hopefully my brushwork has gotten better since then.

I've had these forgeworld ironsides sitting on my shelf for years and recent themed painting events, and with my own motivation for the hobby resurging, I set about to paint them:

They're primarily black as they are residents of nuln (?).

10 ironsides and Jerbal Falk (?) the engineer.

Just the musician and standard bearer to go.

Hi Athiuen,

I feel like you are trying to compete for longest gap between updates!
Your 2011 vs my 2012!

I like your work. Those Free Company are excellent.
I assume your Ironsides still need to be based like the rest? The paintjob looks good.
