thanks for the comments you guys, really appreciate them.
So I finally finished my griffin knights, I prob could have taken a little longer with them but I was starting to get impatient with them and they have a lot of nooks and cranies. I wanted them to look as though they were from the knights of the blazing sun, this will be the same scheme for when I do the unit of knights and the grand master.

Next up is the bsb or a witch hunter.
I have also been thinking about a war alter. Instead of doing a normal one, I was thinking of a massive cobbled looking thing with a vampire being burned on a cross or something in that area.  ::heretic::

C&C welcome as always.

well my plans for the night fell through so I spent the evening doing research and painting. The bsb still is not primed because the weather has been poor (stupid Washington) so I went ahead and painted the witch hunter. I probably wont use this guy much but its nice to have, and I love this model because he is more of a vampire hunter with the garlic and stake.

excuse the quality of the pics, I am still messing around with the camera.

C&C are welcome as always

hey guys, so I have been a little scatter brained with working on stuff lately and have not actually finished anything. However I have been working on my bsb. I was heavily influenced by the art in the new book and wanted to make it look more baroque while maintaining a averland sun theme.

also ignore the actual captain, i put some base coats on him and then got bored.
I am not sure what to put on the other side, I was thinking a sun, but that would be to similar, maybe a german cross... not sure.

anyways C&C welcome as always.

fantastic banner!
Dwarves....
yeah, they really are comically small. Still, all that matters is that you're happy doing them.

I'm particularly fond of his Little Billy Landsknecht.

That's a very cool looking banner.  Do you mind showing a few WIP shots the next time you do a freehand job like that?  I would love to see any tips or methods into doing it.

Banner is indeed superb, but what is ingenious in it's subtelty, are those demigryph bases! They are not boring to look at, but also they aren't overcomplicated - It must be hard to achieve on bigger areas! Bravo!

wow thanks guys, I did not think this would be so well received
Dosiere- when I paint the other side I will try and show a step by step.
Stolzeuhu- thanks, I definitely felt that the bases were barren and needed something. I suggest everyone place subtle bitz on bases, they help break up the base and can really tie a army together if used correctly. its really hard to see in those pics but there is also some splintered balsa wood mixed in as well.

I'm still throwing around ideas for the other side, I want some color other than yellow or black but I still want it to be painted in the same style.

again thanks for the comments everyone

Bases: bits + green foliage - thats what makes them classy!

hey guys, so I did a little more work on the banner. At first I attempted to do a skull with a hour glass in the shape of a twin tailed comet but I did not look right so I went with this.

A little hard to tell, but there is a shield in the lions mane and scrolls that flow down the banner. there will also be a twin tailed comet at the top. Sorry I was not able to do a step by step, the paints dry way to fast to take pics when I do a wet mix technique. My advice is to paint oil paintings through a art class to get practice with free hand and mixing. I know its kind of a cop out for helping people but its honestly how I got to be able to paint free hand and have brush control.

Hopefully I can plug away on this as the week continues.

Very good and the blending is great!  I look forward to seeing it complete.

So you do an outline and then clean the outside lines with the banner color (in this case black) if you have to?

Are you using a picture or a sketch as you do these as reference?

Thanks :icon_biggrin:
I try not to go back and touch things up with black, its easier to be careful once than messy multiple times.
I am using references when I do free hand. Both sides were inspired by little pieces of filler art in the new book. For the lion I looked at a lot of pictures of actual lions and even did some doodles before to train my hand. I noticed another thread where the empire art book was being discussed. Even though it is a little expensive, I think it is worth its weight in gold for inspiration in regards to banners. I know people say you can look at actual historic banner for free but they do not have the same "warhammer" feeling, and they did do a good job showing some unique banners along with demonstrating units with fluff and unique flair.

Hopefully I can get some more work done on this tonight. I also bought a bunch of the new horses on ebay, so when they get here ill be able t do some knights.

Fantastic work on those banners.
Oil painting class you say. Hm, worth considering. Could be fun in any case.

ITS FINALLY DONE ... well at least the banner, the captain is no were near close to being done.

This is the first time I have done writing that I dont instantly hate. I will say that I wont be painting any more banners for awhile, that thing took around 5 hours to complete.

Thanks for the comments again, hopefully I can get this guy done soon and my stuff will come in the mail so I can build stuff instead of doing more painting.
