Yeah, yellow over black undercoat has always been one of the hardest.
Although The new GW base paints are really good and I imagine starting with Averland sunset (a golden yellow). Or even XV-88 (snakebitey leathery) would make it a hell of a lot easier.

P.s. We both tried the NMM in the same places. I'd be keen to try it again but maybe on a single model for a board game, as it would be so time consuming on a bigger scale.

Given that i take an eternity to paint anything, i might as well post photos of work in progress. See below the progress of my hurricanum, unashamedly copying the GW paint scheme (i cant help but like it). Im painting most bits unassembled as i figured itd be a bitch to get into some of the cracks and crevices completely assembled.

Also - apologies for the fact that im already a fair way through the paint job, so i cant show you a complete before and after spectrum of pics. But here goes anyway:

Great paint job on the Hurricanum, the paint really seems to "pop" on the models. Loving the shading and highlights.

The painting of individual components continues. Despite me (ashamedly) getting distracted by watching Australia's "The Bachelor" and "Beauty & the Geek", progress has actually been made.

Another completed side panel:

Just starting the inner scrolls/books. Not sure why those would be needed in a battle - maybe the acolyte in the back gets bored and wants to catch up on his reading? Maybe for a laugh ill try to paint a "Gotrel & Felix" on one of the book covers...

It seems motivation has struck....or is it just the need to have this done for January?
Though I imagine working piece by piece really works for you as you get to see regular progress for your hours of effort.

Your piece by piece photos are making me relive this painstaking task all over again haha. I took the same approach, at least this method gives you hope each time you complete a minor piece to this massive puzzle. Though I took the lazier option to paint 1 wizard model to man my hurricanum, rather than painting 2 acolytes

..not that I would ever play it that way in a game. Yours looks great though especially the light and dark contrasts on the horses. Looks crisp. Mine cost me around 40-45 hours of my life

...how many hours have you pumped into this monster so far?

This. And I did two Acolytes...

I worked on this model on and off for almost a six months. After doing the same with a War Altar. Couldn't even begin to count the hours.
I love the results you're showing, and look forward to the finished model!

Thanks for all the encouragement. Yes - this is taking up many hours. Wouldnt know exactly how many, but at least an hour each night for the past month, and im not even nearly finished yet. But im used to very slow, tedious painting as i know its the only way to get results im satisfied with.

One day i really will have to try this "Army Painter" method which speeds the painting process up considerably. However my armies tend to be all bright and crisp colours, so im not sure my collection will work too well with the army painter effect. Maybe for a completely diferent army one day.
