New 40k edition,
Mathi Alfblut:
Steadfast is simply ace, Crimson! I hated how massed, ranked infantry was just blown away by say 5 cavalry charging their front! It almost broke Fantasy for me, since I love infantry. But since you like knights and cavalry more, I understand why you do not like the 8th. But infantry needed a core rule boost and they got it. Now, the downside is that GW made the size of a flanking unit needed to remove steadfast too big. But better that than too small in my opinion.
We will have to see what comes out of 40K. As for everyone having transports these days, well, it depends on what you mean with a transport. The swedish National protection forces motorized infantry companies, to which I belong, deploy with personal transport terrain trucks. Unarmoured with a machinegun for some firepower. It takes us from point A to B, but we do best deploying at a distance from our target and we move in on foot, vehicles tracking behind the infantry so we can get re-supplied reasonably fast. But there are no such vehicles in 40K. An ork Trukk is the closest and they are heavily armoured in comparition.

I like being able to have an entire army in transports (or arriving by teleport). I don't play a sci-fi game and expect to have to walk!
40K definitely needs more missions though. Just lining up and having a battle isn't fun.

But you can't remove steadfast by flanking! Only by having more ranks than the enemy.
Crimsonsphinx:
There is a reason the only army I have left in a useable amount are my skaven. I have around 300-350 models. No cavalry to get screwed over.
I have no idea what games you played Mathi, but I can't ever remember 5 knights breaking infantry from the front. I hardly ever remember knights hitting, it was always the horses :-D. Now perhaps this is because noone fielded Blood Knights in my group, but we did face Chaos Chosen Knights, but even they would have to go some to overcome infantry from the front. If knights failed to break the infantry on the charge, they were usually done for. But hey, why have tactics when you can just stick steadfast in, and put your infantry into 10+ ranks? :-D
Regarding transports in 40k, as an ork in Dawn of War once said "Whys I walking?" :-D
If it was going for realism, then surely troops would be able to be transported on top of main battle tanks as well as in trainsports? Thats what troops used to do in war. Now I appreciate Marines probably can run as fast as tanks, certainly in the fluff, they seem to be near super human, but guard etc, should realistically either be dug in, or be mobile.
Mathi Alfblut:
Tank riders would be an awesome rule for guards, with some added risk for the guys on the tank getting shoot to ribbons and having no cover save against HE blasts.
Orkz can at least ride on their Battlewagons somewhat like russian infantry. That is why I am soft for the greenz.
Talking of that, have you lot seen the pics of the new coming flyers? Let me tell you I am pumped! PUMPED! I have always wanted to have orkz air support for my army and now I can have it! :icon_mrgreen:
Siberius:
Chaos knights could break units from the front regularly in 7th. They were brutal!
