Trying to Update My list From 7th to 8th Edition...Help!!
« on: May 21, 2012, 07:10:40 AM »
I'll try and keep this brief.

So I haven't exactly played much in the 8th edition of Warhammer, and I figured now would be the time to start. The problem I've run into is that the models I have and the structure of my old army doesn't seem to really fit quite well in the new edition. 18 to 20 man units just doesn't seem to cut it anymore, but as a player with a fairly small amount of money to work with, I don't really want to spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars to get a couple useful units if I can avoid it.

Here's what I have available (FORGIVE ME IF THE UNIT TYPE ISN'T ACCURATE... DON'T HAVE THE NEW BOOK)

1 Mounted General
1 Mounted Captain
2 Wizards
2 Warrior Priests

CORE:
18 Spearmen
25 Free Company
20 Swordsmen
12 Knights
16 Handgunners

SPECIAL:
2 Cannons
1 Mortar

RARE:
1 Helblaster
1 Steam Tank

I also have 2 unopened boxes of State Troops, but don't know what to use them for yet.

Any assistance, however minor would be greatly appreciated. Any units I should build up on, or that I should scrap?

That's not a bad start at all, Member #1. Call me Captain Obvious but of course you need to get the book first.

1) Characters: Fine as they are. You can field a General and BSB on horses (get them ward saves if you can and/or the charmed shield for one), a L4 + complementary wiz if you like OR 2* L2's. You can also use a WP model as an Archlector if you want. You might want to buy an Engineer at a later date since he improves the Hellblaster considerably or a BSB/General on foot if you chance upon many cannon but that's really optional. No acute need to spend any money here.

2) Core troops: Halberdiers have long been considered the optimal choice, and they probably are but especially Spearmen aren't that bad. I suggest that you either convert your Spears/Swords/some of them to Halbs and build the rest as such as well OR that you try to get a decently sized unit of Spears going (40-50). With two unopened boxes, 38 + two characters is a start.

To support them, you can use detachments of Swordsmen, handgunners and/or Free Company. Swordsmen and Free Company are both a little too expensive for what they do, pointswise, but especially the former serve well as detachments whose job it is to survive for as long as possible.
My suggestion would be to use 1-2 combat detachments and field the handgunners in a separate unit so that they don't slow you down with move or fire. Of course, handgunners are not that effective, so a small unit to clear chaff is really all you need.

Knights are core (regulars or Inner Circle) or special (Reiksguard), so give you a lot of flexibility. You can field small units of stubborn Reiksguard or plain vanilla core knights, a large unit of RG or Inner Circle. The latter would probably be the best option short- to mid-term as it helps fill your core requirements and adds some punch and mobility.

Another box or two of State Troops never hurts but that's about all you'd need in the short term.

3) Special and Rare look good. The Mortar isn't very useful but two cannon are often a staple and both Hellblaster and STank are excellent choices. No need to spend any money here. Things that are nice to have are the new stuff: A Hurricanium or Luminark (I hear the top can be swapped out, so buying one would be sufficient to at least test out what you like better) and/or a box of Demigryphs to add some punch in combat.
Some German words are so long that they have a perspective. Whenever I come across a good one, I stuff it and put it in my museum.

Yeah, your core is definitely all over the place. Are your knights built with lances? That's an important question. Assuming that they are I might do a list something like this at 2000 points:

Level 4 wizard
Warrior Priest on foot
Captain, Mounted
BSB, on foot

38 Spearmen
Detachment 19 Swordsmen
Detachment 16 handgunners

6 Inner Circle Knights, flaming banner, possibly steel standard

6 Reiksgaurd knights, banner of discipline (your captain goes in here as your army general so you'll have LD9)

2xcannons
mortar

Steam Tank
Helblaster

As for your free company, either don't use them at all, use them as proxies for other types of troops, or take one or two units of 10 with just a musician and use them to defend your artillery batteries.

But essentially I agree with LSP, you can do this just by picking up 2 boxes of state troops.

Option B would be to stick with small blocks of state troops for use as wizard bunkers, then go with 7 IC knights (with captain and general in there) 5 reiksguard knights, and take the $54 you were going to spend on state troops and get Demigryph knights instead.
