Empire back from the Wastes
« on: June 14, 2012, 01:13:19 AM »
I have been playing Warhammer for quite a while (about 15 years) and I always jump from project to project.  I am going to do a 3rd reincarnation of my beloved Empire.  I have played empire for about 5 years now and my army is sorely in need of an update.  I have quite a bit of the army painted and converted but I am tired of painting my standard guys, and w/ bigger units being more of the game, I have a lot to do to get my army whipped into shape.  I was at my LGS thinking of what to do w/ them and not wanting to buy 3 Demigryphs for a total of $55, when I decided I was going to do an Empire army coming back from the Chaos Wastes w/ their spoils.  Right away I went and got the steeds of slaanesh and decided that they will become my demigryphs.  I have modeled them w/ Empire knights that have stolen the steeds and have the chicks chained up in tow.  I am also going to do some nice unit fillers.  I believe I will have some Flagellants pulling a "portal" back to the homeland, and some greatswords whipping some khorne slaves into battle.  I also will do a diorama w/ the Great unclean one from the early 90's being chained down by some state troops.  All in all I think this will be a pretty great theme to put through my army, I get to paint chaos and Empire stuff, and the converting should be fun.  I will post some pictures of the work I have already done shortly, and I will be updating it as I go.  Hopefully you guys will enjoy checking it out.

And here is where the army is going.....

Steed of slaanesh knights (demigryph knights) I need to think of something for a 6th one (only 5 come in a box)

The start of my portal for a unit filler (flagellants will have it chained up and dragging back, w/ a wizard trying to contain the Tzeentch beasties)

Let me know your thoughts and ideas, I really think this is going to be pretty fun!!!

This is certainly different. I like the creativity of this, but question the wisdom of having Daemonettes chained behind the knights with their (Very sharp) arms free.

From a modelling perspective, you may want to have the Daemonette impaled on the lance to droop more if she's supposed to be dead (Though Daemons who 'die' are instead banished back to the warp. If she's alive, you may want to model her struggling a bit more, grasping the lance that has impaled her for example.

Overall I think this is a very ambitious project and can't wait to see more.

yeah...I think you are right on those things.  I still have some modelling left to do on the "demigryphs".  I think I am going to blindfold the deamonettes; and the one w/ the big claws, have them bound behind her back.  The impaled one looks too alive because the hair is sticking straight up, I am going to model it w/ the hair hanging in her face, that should help it out quite a bit.  Thanks for the quick feedback.

One to watch..... nice idea
Then make three times that. It should be enough for half the roof Glue
You could certainly amass quite a collection of testicles

Really interesting concept on those 'Demi-Gryph' Knights! :eusa_clap:

That Greatsword robo-champ is also great btw. Do you read the Girl Genius comic?

hi, your paining looks good from what i can see, but it's a classic case of the camera giving a dark image,

can you turn up the white balance setting?

it will illuminate the whole image, and show us your models clearly , rather than shrouded in dark

Love the theme for this army. Very cool!

been a really busy week, so I haven't been able to get much done....thanks for picture comments Chumley, I did take these originals on a Blackberry, the next ones will be with a real camera.  I have done some minimal painting on the portal and it has really started to shape up nicely, I will post pics soon.  Thanks for all of the positive comments.  One of the reasons I decided to hop on and do this, is because it will keep me motivated to stick to it all the way through.

Thanks for the comments.  This week has definately been busier than I expected.  I was wanting to get more done than I did.  I really want this army to be unique and full of character, but I am having an issue w/ making huge unit fillers/dioramas.  I worked on the portal this week and so far it is turning out pretty good.  Here are some work in progress pics, hopefully I can get some solid work in this weekend and finish this, as well as paint my slaanesh demigryph knights.  What are your thoughts?  Is this too much for a unit-filler?

It's a really good looking piece. I honestly thought it was intended to be a Celestial Huricanium before I read your description. How big is the base? It looks to be about 80mm x 80mm. While it looks cool, it could be pushing the limits of what most people would find acceptable.

It looks really cool, and you're painting it up well.

It is indeed extremely large as a unit filler - it would have to be a massive unit to make it look less overbearing. If you make something of this size for every unit it will probably be too much, but if the rest tend to be smaller, hopefully you can get away with it.
