Gryphon Equip?
« on: July 29, 2012, 11:19:56 PM »
Yes, standard Imperial Gryphon.  Best equipment choices?  How do we make him worth it.  Okay, I don't think we can make him worth it but dammit I at least want him to be effective.  So far here's the best idea I've come up with.

Empire Lord
-Full Plate, Charmed Shield, Ogre Blade, Crown of Command
Gryphon
-Blood Roar, Two Heads

This gives the rider a 2+ save with a 2+ shot at avoiding that first cannon ball or stone thrower shot.  Combining the Gryphon and the Character the model has 8 WS5, S6 attacks so on average hit on 3's wound 2's should be killing average of 4-5 guys and then the Thunderstomp at S6 for another average of 3 is 8ish...  Blood Roar is probably unnecessary but I consider it a fair bit of added defense since the Gryphon actually has no armor this should help keep him alive through multiple round of combat and even should you lose the Crown should keep you there.

Thoughts?  Other equipment kits?  Please, please, share.

I'd probably take a good ward over the Crown. If you take enough damage to lose combat, you're in trouble and possibly already dead. Just make sure you don't leave him unsupported. Best in the flank against small elite units unless you have your own big unit to support.

i would drop the extra head (30pts for +1A? crazy!) and get the white cloak on there. the griff benefits from the -1 to hit which will help keep him safer in CC, and the gen could def do with a ward of somekind
blood roar is mint, use it on units outside of BSB/general range and start a cascade of running :-)

I prefer to take a cheap-ish version: blood roar, lance, charmed shield, dragonbane gem and potion of foolhardiness. Blood roar seems a decent way to make the griffon worth its points by (hopefully) causing failed fear tests in crucial combats. And the cheap items are good value for the small investment, specially in terms of defense. At 321 points + general it is quite a loss if it dies, but it shouldn't be the end of the game.
I take it in an army with some similar targets (stank, chariot, DGKs) so it shouldn't be a priority for shooters. I've had some success with it, though admittedly I have yet to face cannons.

Second head is not worth it.  Bloodroar is AWESOME!  I have used it to great success in a bunch of games, scaring units off the board and then redirecting into a second target (sometimes scaring them away as well).

As far as equipment goes I usually load up with the White Cloak, Sword of Might, Charmed Shield, Potion of Foolhardiness, and full plate.  It is a fun build and has worked great for me.

I'd like to point out that GW values the Terror effect fairly highly in points. So you might want to combo your gryphon with a wizzard that has spells that decrease enemy Leadership. I think shadow is the best for that? I know heavens has a spell that gives -1 Ld.
As soon as your within min charge range you declare charges and hope for them to fail the terror test. It can be a game changer. You want to do this when your gryphon can afford to move 6" forward - in case you get a failed charge, you have to move the highest dice roll forward. So pretty much grpyhon in the center of your lines giving the big leadership bubble and if you moves forward you've got the rest of your army to back him up.

I don't believe shadows has anything for leadership but death has a spell with -3 so that would work well with bloodroar.

Or if you want to guarantee getting a Ld modifying spell then the Heavens signature spell does -1 to hit and -1 Ld at only casting value of 7.

You could always go all-out and field a Death L4 + a Heavens hero-class wizard. Make sure to add the Mask of Eek and the Skavenhelm as well!

Crown is for Grand Master in KIC, to make em Immune and Stubborn.  Ditch that, and invest in some other form of surviveability.
