Some would tell you that it is situational.

Some would say that it depends on your army, their army, or the level of your wizard.

They are wrong.

VOTE LORE OF METAL FOR BEST LORE 2012!
Much like Communism, a level three wizard is a waste of everyone's time and will, in due course, fail miserably.

Now this is academic coming from me, but I have to say that all the Lores are just balls awesome, except for Celestial.  It seems to be weakest Lore.  On paper I would say either Life, Beasts, or Shadow are best for Empire.

Life is great overall, and the healing puts it over the top.  Beasts is really great for its default buff spell - but what a spell!  And Shadow is ridiculous!  I also admit I am just excited over Shadow in Eigth edition because in Seventh I thought Grey Magic was stupid and it was the only Lore I never used.

Every lore is usable, you should look through the spell list and find which one you feel works well with your play style/army list.

If you are going vs vampires or daemons then Lore of Light is your best friend. Banishment can turn the tide of a game round! (From the 3 games of WHFB I've ever played haha,  but still, it was awesome)

It may look weaker on paper, but in practice it's still balls awesome. Lore of Heavens just has different uses and can frustrate your opponent like no other lore. It's the only lore that can force your opponent into certain actions he doesn't want to take. I don't know about you but I find a game easier to play if my opponent is frustrated as they make more mistakes.

I disagree, when my opponent starts to get frustrated (losing composure) the game starts turning worse and worse with each consecutive mistake/bad roll. The game atmosphere turns sour when my opponent stops having fun with the game. Half of the fun of warhammer is to enjoy the other persons company; otherwise, if I didn't care about the other player what so ever, I'd just battle against myself to save my opponent the frustration... This is what makes players that are great sportsmen a joy to play against because, regardless of the battle's outcome, both players have had a great time. Nobody likes sour grapes, end of story.

However; I do agree with part of your statement, the lore of heavens is a great lore along with the rest in the BRB.

Actually, that isn't completely accurate. Daemon players tend to favour Banner of Sundering, which kills lore of light, but in principle you are correct.

@ Shade p38: Asking what lore is the best one for Empire isn't really an answerable question straight off the bat. You have to answer some questions for yourself first before you can start looking at what lore to go with. How magic-oriented do you want your army to be? What is your favourite play style? What units do you want to use and what do you want them to do?

I never meant to do it in an unsportsman-like manner, but by consistently forcing him to change his battle plan. There's no reason the game can't be kept fun while doing this. Of course you'll still run into players like my brother who just don't care about Comet or Iceshard Blizzard or Wind Gust and just stubbornly do what they want, regardless of casualties. He does plan VC though so I guess he doesn't have as much to worry about with such things.

Heaven is rather good with knights and hellblasters. I think i will roll with metal for a start final transformation is awesome no matter what strenght ini toughness one third of the unit dies statistically oh and your guys are stupid glittering scales is perfect for swords and greatswords 2+ save for infantry yesss
Dwarves....
yeah, they really are comically small. Still, all that matters is that you're happy doing them.

I'm particularly fond of his Little Billy Landsknecht.

Fire is of course the hottest lore!
Some German words are so long that they have a perspective. Whenever I come across a good one, I stuff it and put it in my museum.

I'm in the metal camp since our new book was released. I used to roll with light, but since I don't use flaggies any more, there's no point.
I don't use  the HBVG, but if I did I'd say: HBVG + Eng. + aiban -> winwin
Aiban is neat for the magical attacks it confers as well.

And final transformation is just brilliant :)
Archaon, The Everchosen, is one of two openly homosexual special characters in the world of warhammer. The other, of course, is Queek Headtaker.

May I recall an excellent article made some time ago?
8th Edition Empire - Magic Lore Review
and my modest contribution
The balance of an army of the Empire. - 3. Magic ranges.
With this reading, one would realize that the best lore depends heavily on what you need to complement your army:
- Do you need something to prepare the battlefield before melee, or something during melee, or a mix?
- Is your army compact or spread over? Will your mage support from within, from behind or by himself?
- Are you concentrating magic power into a single Lvl4 or spreading out to several Lvl1? How will you share your PD with WP & buffwagons? Taking into account that WP need PD in the first two turns only for making missiles flaming, then they will need as many PD as you can provide for melee, so there must be more PD available for wizards early in the battle.

A lot of these choices are for Level 4s. What do people think is the best spells to take on a Level 1 or 2?

p.s. I like Heavens - a lot of the spells are generally ok, but there are some situations where they are so good you won't mind the times you are a bit underwhelmed.

Check the Imperial Office to read my Warhammer vignettes - all feedback gratefully received.

All depends on your army list. There are certain lores that work with almost any setups but is better to use on a level 4 (Like Lore of Life).

My personal favourites are Lore of Light on a level 4 if I run larger blocks. Great Synergy with Hurricanum /Warrior Priests) for example.
Lore of Heavens is also greatly underrated if you run alot of mounted units bit both great buffs and debuffs.

And of course the lore of cheese - Shadow which work both with a level 4 and with lower level casters for one of the greatest Signaturespells in the game. Same go with Beasts.
