Hi guys, I'd like to appologise first up for the fact that this singe empire related in that the sole empire dude in it has dropped his weapons and is cowering in fear from the Orc, but that's what the model required.

I'd like to show off a recent work that took me six weeks to finish, it's only the third model that I have ever painted. It was / is a birthday present for my brother.

Some of you may have heard of the Australian Hip Hop artist named 360?  Well he's my brother so I made a character conversion of an Orc being him.

The model is a caricature of my brother called "Zixty the Word Basha" and I didn't know where else to post it, and this my second thread hereand I guess I wanted to show off my painting work.  I hope it's okay... So yeah, the concept is that he's an Orc with a Microne and there is an Empire Guy who was coming after him, and he can't take the Orc's Foul Word Bashing so he's covering his ears, he dropped his shield and sword and his head is about to explode from the noise.  I made it like a cut-away from the side of a mountain, a bit, and blended the cut away on the side.  As I said, it's my third ever painted model, and it took me six weeks.  I'm still learning and it's far from perfect, but I think I learned a lot from it.  I hope you guys like it!

If its not appropriate to post something like this on an empire forum please tell me and I won't so it again.

I haven't started working on my empire army yet, but its going to be good and its going to be huge. I've been collecting a huge and good amount if really good pieces and and currently working on and finishing up my bretonnian army. I am currently converting a lot (and when I say a lot I mean every single model has some sort of conversion if I can help it). Would a bretonnian WIP work log go on here or would that be inappropriate? My empire army will be my second army once I've got my practice up and im ready to go full on, so my practice army is bret, but I dunno if its relevant to put that work log. Others have done vamps and other stuff. I dunno if others would like to see that though? Empire will be my main though. Also, my stuff isn't mainly painted yet, but mainly modelled, kit bashed and converted. Is it acceptable to post pics of wip converted models as I model the, as I build my army first and then paint them when I've built up enough pieces to play games with un painted units with my few friends who think my conversions are pretty good so far, so lemme know if ppl would like to see.

I'd love to get some feedback on some of my conversions and I think this is the perfect place to post them so... yes :)

Here is an example of some of the other things I've painted.

Here is a cloak that I painted on a model I use to test paint things.  It was trying a new blending technique.  I think it turned out pretty damn good.  Apart from being un-finished, the blending is awesome!

Here is the second model I ever painted.  Just a lowly peasant archer, but pretty good for the second one I ever painted I reckon!  I know I've got heaps of room for improvement though as I think I still keep putting the paint on too thick, and I was definitely doing so at this stage.

And here is the first model I ever painted, before I knew that to do the highlights for red you should mix in skin tones rather than white so it doesn't go pink.  It still turned out alright.  First model ever keep in mind so don't be too harsh to judge, it turned out okay, the metallics are really bad though I know.

Here is one of the conversions I'm most proud of.  This is a Captain of the Empire Finecast model made into a Bretonnian Knight.  Can you tell which model it is?

My Green Knight on his home made base.  I want to put some tree bits, and bones and also I will be putting lots of autumn leaves on this one when I finalise it.  I love the Green Knight horse and I will end up using it heaps in different models all over the place so be prepared to see it a lot.

Another slight conversion which is the Bret Axe Lord with a much bigger Axe. I personally feel it really sets off the model.  There is a little bit of a subtle change to the axe as well because I put some small shields where the elven rubies should be.

My Bret Archers converted with Empire Free Company Parts and a Vampire Banner - Banner suits the lowly peasents well I think.  I really like what I've done with the stakes (not to yank my own chain again once again... I hope you do to.  Though it all needs to be painted!).  SO MUCH TO PAINT!

Here is the first thing I ever made just to test out what I could do it, it's just a base, but I wanted to see if I could do something like this and how it would turn out.  Drybrushing really turns out alright as a technique and it is easy to make things look good hey?

My fave Peg Knight, he's up so high using the High Elf Dragon Base, but I cut it down heaps so it wasn't quite as high as the original base.  It was a lot of hard work to fill in the top and make it all cohesive.  I filled in the elven writing and I'm planning on making the pile of rocks covered in vines and creepers and ivy and flowers and stuff when it's done.  I gave the Knight an Empire Hammer as well and filled in the Sigmar comet on the side so it will just be a plain hammer in the end.  He's actually further along than this, I really should take a newer photo with the complete model, he has a lance on his side like the next guy I'm going to show you.  I'll try update this pic, it is an old one.

Here is the completed guy that I'm talking about.  I liked the way the old Bret like 3rd & 4th Ed Knights had the Lance on the side like this, so I've been doing this with pretty much all my Knights that I don't have just holding a lance (and those are few and far between, the ones holding lances are just the rear rank filler guys who have nothing special done to them except like old knight heads or the way they're holding the lance changed).  I like changing the way the Knights hold their weapons and the type of weapon they are using.  Axes, Maces, Flails, Swords (lots and lots of different swords especially runefangs with the runes filled), pretty much every type of Noble and Chivalric Weapon I'm using and if they're not holding their lance it will either be broken on the ground, in an enemy behind the horse, or slung behind him like this.  I think it's a cool way to do it.  I've got a lot of different edition Knights about to, I like to make sure that I will not have one repetition.  Not one Knight with the same head on the same type of horse and not one horse with the same leg format and the same head and the same tail format.  I will have no repetition in my army, because in real life, no two soldiers look exactly the same ever.  I will be doing that with all my armies.  There will always be subtle differences, even if they have the same thing on their head crest.  They will perhaps come from the same family, perhaps they're brothers, but they'll use different weapons, or hold slightly different swords, or have a slightly different pattern on their heraldry signifying different mothers or whatevs.  Too much typing for now.  And this isn't getting into how I'm going to do my Empire Stuff.  Gosh I can't wait to get into my Empire Stuff.  I haven't even started on the fact that I never want to Proxy anything.  I want to make a Banner for every type of Unit for every type of Magic Banner that is available so that I can run a guy that has the particular Magic Banner that I'm using for that particular battle, no proxies.  So the Banner of Eternal Flame will be a guy that will be holding a flaming style Banner.  See what I mean? Every Banner will be different and I'll have hundreds of Banner Men.  It will take forever, but damn will it be cool!

This is one of my favorites, overall the model itself is standard except for the high elf lance flag and green stuff built up around the part where it's connected to the lance.  However the base is all custom made, it's cool, there is a little overhang where I used a VC shield and some bones and a skull, like a guy died trying to take some cover under a cliff, or something... it's just a subtle thing, but it's things like this that make bases cool IMO.

I wasn't going to post this because I'm not even going to use this.  It was the first conversion I ever did (actually second, I'll post my first one next), but my first serious one that I ever did) and it turned out... Okay.  I was turning the Island of Blood Griffon guy into a Bretonnian Hippogriff.  Even tried to make the cat feet into hoofs and the cats tail into a horses tail.  Since then my Green stuff skills have gotten better so I've decided if I'm going to do this conversion I need to have another go at it again in the future and just use this one as painting practice some day to see how it turns out (how crappy green stuff modelling looks painted).  It turned out looking... crap in my mind, but I'd love to hear what people think of it here, I wasn't going to post it but I may as well.  I went as far as putting the fur on the horses legs and everything.  In actual fact the whole thing turned out okay, it's the tail that looks crappy.  I have since purchased many metal tail bits off ebay searching for the right part to go there because my modelling of a horses tail looks total bollocks IMO, but they all just seem a bit too short.  Perhaps a bit too short might make up for what is there at the moment because the feet came out pretty good i think.  Well, not good, but not terrible, they might pass when it's mounted on the base I made for it, diving down on it's foe from a high rock.  If only I could figure out how to drill into marble.

These are all REALLY old things and I've done so so so so much since these pics were taken.  I will take some more pics now and upload them and post if people are interested in non painted stuff to see what other conversions I've done.  I'll take some pics of my un-painted empire collection as well to show the absolute foreboding nature of my task for the future.  I can probably afford to take another year off and work on this full time for one more year before I have to go back to work (my circumstances might allow for this) and this is what I want to dedicate my life to at the moment... can two armies be completed with this much attention to detail and this much work with a commitment to wanting every single type of unit from both armies field-able within a year working 3 to 4 hours on it a day (because that's about all I can manage before my work gets sloppy and I'm a major perfectionish)?

All your models look really good, and I love the Word Basha - he's great! Cool concept.

Thanks for the kind words guys, so its ok to post this stuff?

Please give me constructive criticism. Like if you see errors you think  im making, or you think it's just bad or out of whack or things just don't go I want to hear it straight out!! We might not agree but I want honest perspective not just blind praise.

I realise its not pro class painting, but for a beginner I think i did pretty good.

Any pros out there wanna give me suggestions on what I should try and focus on improving on? Probably hard from just these few. I know that I need to apply thinner. I think I'm still getting used to the pain consistency levels, that's gotta come with exp.

Yee-ha, love it when you get a nice big pile of celeophane-wrapped goodies to tear into and then look hopelessly around a mountain of sprues... where's that damn spear sprue gone  :?

You asked for some pointers here and there. I'd say the "Zixty Da Word Basha" diorama is really well done - cool concept, well executed modelling and painting clean and bright. Perhaps you could get some Matt Varnish on it though, just to reduce the shiny shiny edges so you can see all those lovely details! I prefer the brush on stuff (from Vallejo) but its slower going with application and then waiting 4 to six hours between coats (it'll need two or three). For gaming models that'll see a lot of handling give them a coat of satin (or gloss) first.

Mostly its a case of practise. Particularly with green-stuff sculpting but also painting its a case of patience - lots of patience - and good measure of trial and error. You say thinner paints but it depends what you're doing. Some textures/surfaces work well with heavier paint, dry-brushing or stippling (dabbing the paint on with a stiffer, non-pointy brush) are good examples.

I have used Vallejo paint on Matt Varnish on the model! It still looks shiny though, I must be applying the varnish wrong or too thickly or something because when I use it the model becomes glossy.  I used it on the Bowman as well and now he's glossy as well.  I hate glossy and I love matt, matt is so much better, especially for photographing.

What am I doing wrong??!?!

Regarding the diorama, how many times and at what distance did you apply the varnish?

Are you using a spray on or a brush on matte varnish? If it's a brush on varnish you probably aren't stirring it enough. You have to mix it very well and mix while you are using it.

If you were using a spray varnish, not all matte sprays will produce a good matte finish. Some actually produce a more satin finish or even glossy in some cases. With these you really need to shake the can well or it won't produce a good matte finish. You also could have been spraying too thick of a coat. A thick coat of matte finish won't dry with the rough surface it needs to be matte. With matte spray it is much better to use multiple very light coats. I actually prefer to give a good coat of gloss to get a good protective finish and then a light coat of matte once it's dry as multiple coats of matte finish can sometimes give a more satin finish as well.

I use Valspar flat clearcoat. Krylon works too, very dull finish.

I use Krylon matte finish for most of my troops, but I use Testor's dullcote for my characters. Testors drys with the best dull finish but it's fairly expensive so that's why I use it on characters.

When using Vallejo's brush on matt varnish I start by thinning it to about 50% with water and applying it with a damp brush, picking up only a little at a time. Spread it very thinly and evenly and wait for it to dry. Clean out the brush frequently as you go since any varnish that's drying in the hairs of the brush will mess up the finish. Leave it overnight (or do a coat in the moring and leave it 6hrs or so) and repeat this process. After two to three coats you should be good. Or I run it through the airbrush, in the same manner, for larger groups and batches.

Matt varnish does need to be built up carefully though - you can easily end up going shiny by applying it too thick and/or 'working' it around on the surface too much. Of course the other end of the scale is where you haven't let the paint or previous layers of varnish dry sufficiently and the moisture in those layers makes the finish go cloudy. It can be slow going but it is worth it.
