Altdorf. The Secret Night 2525

Altdorf. The Secret Night 2525. The soldiers stories.

The “End Times” is not all doom and gloom for the game. I see it as an opportunity to create some smaller games and also some big mass battle’s, which as a family we have wanted to do for a long while. Got excited with all the rumours for Black Fire Pass a few years ago, alas another falsehood. The last time’s we really played was through the “Storm of Chaos” campaign, so fitting to restart with the second attempt from GW.

These are the small engagements within the city of Altdorf that never made the main stories from Games Workshop or Black Library. They are about soldiers, militia, and the ordinary folk caught in the city. Some stories will use lesser characters from black library book, for which I hope their authors do not take offence.

Please feel free to contribute to each chapter as they happen, all advise and suggestion will be considered and the chapter altered if I feel that it works. If it’s a suggestion for a model, then please don’t make it to hard, as my modelling skills are basic, though I will give it a go if worthwhile.

The aim is to have a working scenario for the end of each section, which I hope one of the local war gaming groups will play test for me. I hope to update each Sunday with something new. This should help me focus and get some of my old projects finished and models painted. Each chapter is Empire focus, therefore there will only be a points suggestion for the chaos force. [that is unless I change my mind.] Please note that some units are not official Games Workshop, i.e. mounted Reiksguard squires from the first chapter.

Only the first two chapters are definite and have working storylines. Let me get these out of the way before suggesting any new setting for story’s or PM me with you idea.

Chapter .1   The defence of the Reiksguard chapter house.
Chapter .2   Saint Botolphus’s Square.
Chapter .3   Fight for the river Reik.
Chapter .4   Fish’s and Hook’s.

CHAPTER ONE.
The defence of Reiksguard Chapter House. Altdorf.

To acknowledge straight away, Richard Williams “Reiksguard” book published by Black Library, from which the setting and characters are taken from.

Location.
In the book, Griesmeyer and Reinhardt arrive at the western gate of Altdorf and although this building does not appear on any official maps, it should be somewhere near the Imperial Palace, [which would make sense, given the Reiksguard guard duties]. The chapter house is described as being a separate citadel surrounded by its own walls, of which non of the surrounding building was allowed to overlook.

Story.
Tomas Hardenburg lay in a cot, the pain still great in his right leg, which was held rigid with splint and bandage. Three days prior, whilst on patrol near the Drakwald forest, they had encountered more beast men. During then engagement Harbenburg’s horse was killed from under him, resulting in a broken leg from his fall.

The door to the infirmary opened, in walked Laurentz Proktor. Still in his armour from this morning, except for the left arm which was supported in a sling. Whilst on the walls earlier another section had rotted away and fallen along with Proktor. Among his many bruises his arm was broken in several places.

The noise and smell of the city entered with him. Inhuman screams and wailing, the crackle and splintering of burning structures. The smell of disease and death. Proktor approached and sat on the edge of Hardenburg’s cot.

“We have to do something to help” said Proktor.

“ Like what ? You know we are in no fit state to ride with our brother.” Hardenburg replied.

Fight Master Talhoffer and Ott are defending the broken chapter walls with some of the sergeants, whilst those able of the squires left behind have manned the walls with their bows replied Proktor.

So what do you suggest, we drag ourselves from this cots, don armour and charge to the rescue. Hardenburg said with a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

With that Proktor lurched up, “That’s it my friend.” Finding a chair upon which he now stood Proktor launched into the most rousing speech Hardenburg had ever heard. After which Knights with wounds and the plague contagion , began to help each other into armour, eager for the coming fight.

Hardenburg tried to stand but his leg gave way. “ I’m not being left behind.” he said, and I have an idea.

A short time later Proktor lead Reiksguard Knights on foot to the walls of the chapter house, whilst Hardenburg with the help of some of the younger squires went in search on the items they needed from the Grand Hall and stables.

Sunday night update.
Need to make a start on the Chapter house, so bought castle cheap on e-bay. Have two options at present of how it should look.

or

Empire Force
25x Swordmen with shield.
These are the undertraining knights and serjeant, led by Fight Master's Ott and Talhoffer. With use company of Reikland Swordsmen.
20x Bowmen.
These are the squires of the Reiksguard Knights.
20x Reiksguard Foot Knights.
Will use my Carroberg greatswords for this unit, as I do not have enough Reiksguard foot soldiers and I will only pay upto a price on e-bay.
10x Mounted Squires.
These I need to scratch build, still need 5 light horses to complete. Not easy to find.
Unit of undead Knights yet to be determined.

Sorry second week running no update, lots of castle walls, towers and gate house cut up. Chunks removed. Hope to start assembling and painting this week. GamesPoet wins, going for two tower gatehouse. Also started work on Chapter house. Going to attach 2 tabletop chapels either side of Witchfate Tor tower. Again pictures when more advanced.

Does anyone know what Grave Mould looks like? [from fall of Aldrorf books].

Work in progress.

Great fun playing with plaster bandage, not so fun cleaning kitchen work surface afterwards.
Cut the ruined wall in half, so if needed in future can make larger breach in the walls. Going to keep the gap as flat as possible so that figures can stand in the breach.

Second time of pulling tower apart. Now with windows and figure can be put on first floor. Need to make the damaged area larger as can't get my hand in to get figure once all four sides on.

Really great idea! I just started reading the End Times books again, and beneath all the destruction (and cheating, especially from the Skaven...), there is the potential for some pretty cool scenarios. I look forward to following this project!

The build continues. Completed side wall and corner tower.

Hole in tower now large enough to get figures in and out again.

This is great!  And I like the color of the outside of the tower and walls, and that it contrasts well with the inside of it, including the part that has been destroyed. :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

How were the walls painted?

Thanks for the comments GamesPoet. Walls started from black undercoat. [Halfords Matt Black spray]. Heavy coat of Gw graveyard earth, however mine ran out and hate the match colour [to light.] So changed to vallejo earth. [wall in gw/ tower in vallejo base coat.]. Next heavy dry brush GW dheneb stone, using big brush. Next apply heavy wash either GW devlin mud or warpaint strong tone. When dry light dry brush again with dheneb stone, finally very light dry brush with white. To add stains I used sepia and green ink washes.

Are you trying to build a city? If so can we expect other types of buildings like cobblers shop, bakery, or jail?

Hi Doc J. No full city as yet, only got 6 tabletop Workshop building before the company seemed to disappear. Just love the Grandmanor buildings, but until I win the Lottery it's just a lustful wish.
