Warhammer Empire Demonhunter Idea Development!
« on: April 17, 2005, 09:15:19 PM »
Hey guys,
Hope the title got your attention.
A couple of guys and I in my local gaming club are trying to come up with some house rules for a campaign that we are developing, and we need some help!

The idea is this. Based on the 40K version of demonhunter, we are trying to create a army list for an empire equvilant and "hunts" vampire counts, tomb kings and choas. The list's structure  will resemble a dogs of war list. Ie standard empire core with own items, upgrades and special choices.

Here are some early ideas that I hope you guys can evaluate and refine.

Magic Items:
-Silver bullets: Wounds VC on a 2+
-Holy Water: Use as dart. Bottle of holy water wounds on a 2+ with no armour save

Special Choice:
-Jones' Grave robbers: based on FC, armed with one hand weapon and one torch that does fire damage. (Mummys are flameable right?)
-Van Hellimon's Vampire Hunters: based on Swordsmen, Hatred against vampire

Troop upgrade:
-garlic: +1 initiative in combat with VC

More ideas will be added later. How many points will these cost? Improvments?
Any other ideas?

Thanks for all the help!

It sounds interesting as house rules, and a curious idea, but doesn't seem based on the 40K daemonhunters. Those are supposed to be pure warriors of light etc. Mind you, I think a "peasants with torches" style fits Fantasy a lot more.

I don't want to act as a backseat mod, but I don't think havingly blatantly "HAY LOOK AT ME" thread titles like that is a particularly good idea.

wouldn't it make more sense for garlic to have a negative effect on vampires and not a positive effect on the armies troops. So, instead of maing garlic give you plus 1 initiative to your troops (vs vampires) just have something like vampires suffer -1 leadership and must take a leadership test at -X ld to charge or if they get charged etc.

EDIT: by the way, vampires have I 6 as a thrall, I 7 as a count, and I 8 as a lord so having plus 1 initiative would have no real effect against them, as humans have the average I of 3

Well, grave robbers...

I didn't know that self promotion is not allowed, if any mod want me to change it then I'm happy to comply. But, three replies already...it must be working. :-D

That garlic idea sounds cool. -1 leadership it is.
I don't want to give SUPER strong units to the list. They are stil human, just a edge when fighting the demons...well maybe one or two super strong unique units. Ie, based somewhat on the grey knights. kinda like a empire version of the chaos knights.

Any other ideas, suggestions?

Thanks all.

Holy water....Well maybe on a Vampire...but on a High elf Silver helm? Wounds on a 2+ with no save eh? thats just a touch far fetched for my likes. Besides, the empire is already plenty scary enough.

The 2+ to wound magic items are pretty excessive, they would require a fairly hefty points cost in order to maintain balance. Try to use the existing magic items and their points costs as a guide.

Hi JMA, I took the "HOT" tags off your title if you don't mind. Topics usually get plenty of attention in this forum without having to scream for it :)

I think most of these items would work best as magic items rather than unit upgrades - and yes, wound on 2+ is pretty excessive, you'll want to tune that down a bit methinks. Maybe you should also introduce a "Sign of the Hammer" item for characters, like the effect of a crucifix on "real" vampires - I dunno, sacrifice 1 attack to Strike First vs. Vampires?

How about undead having to pass a leadership test or causing terror on the undead for a holy cross of Sigmar.
Maybe holy water should be considered as poison to the undead. Put it on arrows or weapons.

Except of course that Undead never need tot ake leadership test and are completely immune to Psychology maybe?

This could of course be an overriding exception. Wouldn't be hard rules wise. Just simply state that even though they are Immune to Psychology they will still feel Terror/Fear (and that could not be overridden by their own Terror/Fear. Should only apply to characters though. Maybe even only Vampire ones.

The cross was indeed meant as an overriding exception.

Another idea could be "globes of light".
A magical throwing weapon, during the shooting phase it's thrown say 8" or 12". The globe bursts, light spills out, causing D?? strength ?? hits.

Well, if it would count for troops it would be far too overpowering considering the Ld of the basic Zombie (2) and Skeleton (3).

But if it would only apply to characters they could escape the effects by simply joining a unit of skellies or so because the unit psychology rules would take precedence.

Unless you want to make an exception for that as well of course but IMO things quickly become a mess when you start mixing up too many exceptions to the basic rules.

I got 2 (one is mostly a joke) more ideas for you:
Holy Water Gun
range: 14 inches
does 1 automatic wound with no armour save to the model hit. works on ALL undead

Stake: (you just GOT to have this) gives you the Killing Blow vs vampires

Cheers guys! Some really good ideas.
Here's what we have so far. Feel free to refine and add to it.

Garlic: can be given to basic units like a shield up grade. -1 Ld for any vampire that's in base contact. Costs 2 pts per model.

Silver bullets inscribed with runes: magic item. 4+ to wound on a vampire and were-creatures with no modifiers. 50pts.

Holy Symbol: Magic Standard. +1 combat resultion again undead, vampire, chaos..etc.  All undead, vampire, chaos...etc ingaged in CC will have -1 Ld. 40pts

Banner of the Hunter: magic standard. hatred against undead, vapmire, chaos..etc.

What do you think? Can you come up with some specail units that can be represented by units form the empire with some modification?

Cheers

I don't think I'm aware of any were-creatures in WHFB, although I might be forgetting something.

Well you see you do not need an overriding rule to make the Undead take leadership tests.

Why? Undead are immune to psychology and unbreakable.

IIRC neither of those classes grants you an immunity to leadership tests, not mere psychology tests.

For example, using the Eagles Cry from the lore of Beasts you can make a Black Knight unit move 2d6 backwards. As it is a Ld test.

Way, way to expensive for an upgrade that basically does nothing. -1 Ld for the vampire is rarely going to matter, and at +2 points per model there are just no reason at all to get it. Make it 5 points per unit and it might work. More as a thematic item than anything really useful. But at least it's not horribly expensive too.

The holy symbol is pretty good against chaos, +1 to CR and then a further -1 Ld, so effectively a -2 to there leadership if you do win combat. Just something to think about if the cumulative effect perhaps is a bit much.
