At the store just last weekend I was comparing WHFB to 40k by saying that WHFB is like chess and 40k is like checkers.

A certain rules lawyer who used to play dwarves now plays tau, said he quit WHFB (a glorious thing) in favor of 40k as you need too many rule books and supplements for WHFB, but only one book and a codex for 40k!!!

I remember just a few years back that the EXACT same complaint was made about 40k as you needed a hand cart of white dwarf magazines, updates, both versions of your army book, plus special publications just to have the needed rules to play the game.

So have WHFB and 40k traded places? I can still carry all the rules I need in one backpack, (BRB, Empire army book, 2002 and 2004 annuals and one white dwarf with the arch lector rules) is that too much?

40K just received a new rulebook last summer. There aren't 5 years worth of updates to carry around yet. Yet!

It all evens out whenever a game system enters into a new edition.

Now, what worries me is that the Empire is starting to look suspiciously similar to the Imperium...

Actually, in my sotre the have, literaly. They changed the layout...

Anyways, I don't think there are two many books. Rulebook, armybook and one of the annuals for the quick-reference chart.

Actually, I still only bring the rulebook(and it's even the old hardback version) and my army book. I very rarely find I need to bring anything else. If I play dark elves I need a single page print out of the Albion items and the errata on top of that(although to be honest, I haven't had that for ages. Everybody knows what they say).

Of course, it varies a little with what army you play, but I don't really think you need to bring all that much.

I refuse to purchase any updated rule books (i.e 'annuals'), not because I want to exploit faulty rules, but because I feel that such updates should be provided free of charge, in PDF format.

Having said that, all I ever bring to battle are the BRB, armybook, and a copy of the current offical FAQ. If someone wants to enforce a ruling contained within the annuals, all they have to do is drag it out and show it to me. This rarely comes up, though, as 90% of the annual rulings are also covered in the FAQ.

Maybe when that person who switched to 40K realises that some of those codices really aren't all that viable anymore under the new rules, and discovers that GW didn't release a 'Ravening Hordes' like revision this time, he will become less happy with 40K

The chances of me playing a 40K game untill my Orks get a new codex are slim I can tell you!

And what will you do if someone trys to say hey can de-direct into a unit they could of origionaly charged?

Smack them silly of course, it's no problem in friendly games, and in a tournament, go get the referee and let HIM smack them.

Honestly, I don't think that warhammer has a serious problem in this regard, not when you remember that the game is five year old. Besides that, there has been nothing new Q&A in WD since chronicles 2004, which means that it is all you'll need (+ your army book and rulebook of course)

I know, but it's not a problem in friendly games, as your friends hopefully knows the rules (I know mine does),

In tourneys it's not a problem because you'll either have brought the books, or you'll be able to find one pretty quickly

But thats the point, in order to know the rules you need more than the rulebook. And what if someone dosent read WD or look up FAQ's on the internet. I need to carry around a bag of WD's with me to prove to people the rules.
Which has led me to just use SAD all the time, if we are playing not by the rules in there favour it wont matter since I will be winning anyway, even if I do roll 6 dice for my regenerating seer or if they have strength5 comet of casendora.

That has go to be the piss poorest, most lame brained excuse I have ever seen for justifying a SAD army. SAD is taken because it is easy and powerful, not because therulebook is sloppily written.

Short for Shooty Army of Death. It's horrible to play against because there's literally nothing you can do short of having tunnelers and praying for good dice.

Not every Empire player field that. I don't use Helblasters, or HRL, or a Steam Tank, and the only reason I field more than one cannon is to take out those pesky Repeater Bolt Throwers in elven armies or the multidudious large monsters of other armies.
