Luck & Leadership
« on: June 10, 2003, 08:56:15 AM »
I am only relatively new to the game and have yet to play any other than an experiencecd O&G general. Since I have started I have found the two most major problems for me are Luck and Leadership.

Someone tell me one's luck does change...it cost me my last two battles (and most of my others).

In the 1st battle my first three artillery and magic phases consitsed of:
Comet of Cassandora - MISCAST (no -ve effect)
Cannon - MISFIRE (no -ve effect)
Mortar - MISFIRE (no -ve effect)
Comet of Cassandora - MISCAST (no -ve effect)
Cannon - MISFIRE (no -ve effect)
Mortar - MISFIRE (no -ve effect)
Comet of Cassandora - DISPELLED
Cannon - MISFIRE (no -ve effect)
Mortar - MISSED

Brilliant saving rolls...but!

In the 2nd battle I had a unit of savage orc boyz and a unit of night gobbos plus shaman fleeing...both rally...shaman casts hand of gork on boar boyz...they destroy my general's swordsmen unit and cause 12 knights to flee the table.

Thus saying my luck is terrible but what can one do to counter panic tests? I find my army flees off the table  before I have a chance to do much. It is my smaller units (used in attempt to distrtact, stop march moving and remove fanatics) that is causing the majority of my army to run.

Suggestions...or similar tales of woe.
My Armies:
Empire
Ogres

With this luck, i would sugest you to use the battle standard bearer, very close to your main units, to re-roll break tests. If that's not enought, include a Imperial Banner in the Battle Standard. Enginners and a battle wizard of the celestial order casting the "Second Sign of Amul" can help your artillery be more accurate.  And a last sugestion: change your dices...

I once was playing a high elf player with Teclis in a unit of spearmen. My knights were positioned to charge it on the flank, but a fleeing unit of swordsmen got in the way. The next turn they rallied, and I lost majorly. If I had got that charge off, it would have been a draw! And you thought leadership was all good....
You've got questions? I've got a cannon.

You  can't make second sign help your artillery become more effective. You can only reroll D6 dice. And Imperial Banner is a waste of points really... better use those 100 pts for some more troops.

But the second sign can still help you don't get a BOOM! in the missfire chart, doesn't it? And the Imperial Banner can sometimes be useful, with that luck... But i never use it, i agree that is a waste of points.

In the immortal words of Louis Pasteur ... "Chance favours the prepared mind".

So, yes you had some bad luck, but the key to ridding it out is to have contingencies if your luck fails.  Won't save you all the time, but more often than not contingency plans can bring a loss back to a draw.

Contingenices plans?  What will be the implications of artillery misfiring?  e.g. Maybe have a small unit that can redirect a gun unit you thought was going to get vapourised by the helblaster ...
