Quote...and you can stick RAW you know where.  The intent of the challenge is one on one.

So subjective RAI trumps RAW? I find the rules situation quite clear. Challenge prohibits attacks directed against model. Charge causes hits against charged unit, in this case consisting of one model. But I repeat myself. In the end you have to play it in any way that you and your opponent have agreed upon.

I agree with Phil

when in a challenge only the characters in te challenge should fight each other. Argueing about inpact hits not being an attack becuase its a different attack class is just semantics.

As for the OP comment on characters fightin on their own getting what they deserved ... well you pay alot for characters and for thier mounts so think a few special rules like challenging is appropriate.

I really miss 6th ed characters being super skirmishers. In 7th ed characters lost that protectiona and flexibility and got very little in return, I would hate for them to loose the tactical protction challenge gives them too.

sooo.... What if a single character is in challenge with a champion in a unit and I start casting soulfire with my archie next to him? An "All models in base contact" spell? Or if I cast a "all enemies within 12" take damage" spell?

Spell goes off.  This isn't as bad as the chariot thing, since the chariot thing is just stupid.  A challenge is supposed to be two heroes dukeing it out.  Challenging a guy, then having your friends start running him over is sort of against the grain of heroic battle no?

PM: Nobody is arguing it isn't in the rules, I am arguing that it is dumb, and not the intent of a challenge.  It is rule manipulation of the worst kind, and in my group its a no go.  Anyone who argues that it is allowed will be wearing the gimp suit for the evening.

Where did she touch you Eight? Show us on the doll.

Wait, are you saying it's an heroic battle for a 1000pt Daemon Lord of Maxed out cheesiness to kill a champion?

I think jlutin has the best idea: distribute the hits between the combatants.

Could some one clue me in on what RAI and RAW means :icon_question:

RAW = rules as written
RAI = rules as intended

Of course you could charge and not take the impact hits ..........

..... just have the flank attack and outnumber for the CR.

You mean they will be using Ouija boards instead of Tarot cards for their business plans from now on?

That reminds me: according to PhillyLogic, this would also be against the intent of a challenge. How is it a heroic duel when all the guys in the flank and back ranks can still affect the challenge in a way that makes the lone challenger break and run? I'm not having a go at you, Philly. In fact, your impression of how a challenge is supposed to be reflected in rules is quite an enjoyable one. But if your argument of 'nothing can affect a challenger except the other character' would indeed be the intention of the rule, then a challenge should make the combatants ItP, unbreakable, alltogether immune to outside effects and so on. Nice concept, but it's not in the book. Maybe a bit too hero-hammerish, too. EDIT: On closer inspection, this is hero-hammerish as hell, and should probably never be part of the rules other than house rules...

Fandir Nightshade

I like the impression of some elven lord having a great description who he is and where he learned the craft of swordsmanship and how studied for three centuries to become one with his blade and in the moment he switches over to his fencing pose a goblin chariot runs him over with some drive by killing.
