Update time! Second one this year, and essentially starting off a new army! Earlier in the year I got some random Tyranids from the Games Workshop free model day, and separately picked up a box of Genestealers to be some bad guys for an RPG I run. Between the two of them, I've honestly kind of fallen in love with painting the weird little bugs. Its both really easy, but remarkably soothing and has so many different options to do stuff with.
Lore dump for the Tyranids!
Hive Fleet Sigiliamo (The Western Abenaki word for Locust or Cicada) is a strange beast. The Void Storm Anomaly to the far galactic North has long been known to have some kind of scattering effect on the warp and psychic powers, but recent insights have shown that it does something similar to the hive mind of the tyranid organisms. The creatures themselves are much more feral, and the hive mind appears somewhat animalistic or possibly senile at times. In their infinite wisdom, local Imperial inquisitors "acquired" a number of organisms that had passed through the Void Storm and seeded them on a feral planet under their observation. Hive Fleet Sigiliamo was the result. While the overall hive fleet is easily identified by its bright orange markings, two different "sub-broods" have been developing. The Garmr Brood has a more fleshy tone to its body, benefiting its location in the more arid regions in the Western Hemisphere of the feral world. Adiak (Abenaki word for hunting dog) has developed a greenish tinge to its body, allowing it to blend into the jungle biomes it calls home.
And these were the free model day models. A trio of Hormagaunts. I painted these up on a whim one night, thinking I'd just experiment with some washes, and ended up just falling in love with painting them. Went out of my way to pick up a starter box of nids to do up more. The nice thing is, pretty much any Nid I can use as a bad guy in some of the rpg's we play. Fantasy or sci fi, angry bug monster looks good facing down the players!
Perhaps fittingly, I had trouble taking pictures of these 3 mutant abominations. Camera just couldn't quite focus. They all have some neat blood effects or metalic parts that don't quite show up in the pictures but look quite nice in person. Really gives the feeling of the demonic monster literally pushing through human flesh to get out.
Finally, I wasn't sure if I'd taken pictures of my ork commandoes, so I took another one.
