Float like a butterfly, sting like a butterfly - unhittable state troops

(1/6) > >>

retrojetpacks:
I've been playing around with state troops for a while and have finally given up on damage dealing in favour of defense. Tonight I tested out the following unit with reasonable success.

30 veteran spearmen with full command, gryphon banner and shields - 335
Level 4 illusion wizard with sword of might- 180
Priest of ulric with heavy armour and additional hand weapon - 66

With ws4, glittering robe (-1 to hit) and winters chill (reroll natural 6s to hit in combat), the unit becomes supremely tanky. High elves were hitting on 5s, rerolling 6s for example.

The unit survived a silver helm first charge, a flank charge from a second unit of silver helms, a rear charge from a block of 16 Lothern sea guard, and a final combat vs the silver helms again and only took 8 casualties!

At more points, the unit could be improved further with a high priest for more reliable chills and/or a warbanner captain for more res.

What do you all think? I will try it out more and report back.

commandant:
If you are going for pure defense do the spears add much.

Winter's chill is a really good prayer I think

Athiuen:
While I applaud your efforts to make infantry useful, I think that a skilled opponent will simply ignore/shoot the unit until late game when they can combo charge it.

To combat this somewhat, you'd have to play very aggressively with the unit, moving it up the field asap to force your opponent to deal with it.

Sir Falo:
Cool idea.
I would probably only take the high priest. Cant get dispelled and the extra charge and MW is ok on State troops.

sedobren:
you could also protect the unit's flanks with column of crystal!

also you could ad a bsb for 70 pts to protect them from panic, or even put it on a demigryph (and remove 6 spesrmen to make way for him). If you need a 30 soldier block you could do it with just 22 of them (plus 2 heroes and demi captain=30), ad a war banner and start with cr of 8. It's a ton of points, though scaling back on the unit size should save you about 60 pts (pr the cost of a demi)
