Do it.....and I think after that we should leave for the exit....taking that handkerchief with us if there are guards or demon worshipers around they might overtake us.

Hmm....it looks like the goblin was vital for the ritual to summon the demon, could you tell me what it looked like as I have never in my life seen a demon....well only the coloured glass ones in the churches. I wonder if we should investigate a bit more how it came that the goblin broke free. The person who needed its blood might be the person who set it free to escape in the first place.

Max best you take a rest and if a fight should erupt flee and get more help....here take the candle.

"The Demon? Are you sure you want me to describe it? I was a great ugly beast, with a single baleful eye, and a dozen tentacles instead of limbs. Julian charged it with great bravery, and we were barely able to banish it 'ere it made a snack of us."

Heinrich noticed Julian tapping his hammer against the wall.

"Is there some passage behind that wall? Perhaps we can go and bring the uncouth fellow who summoned that monster to task for his misdeed. Surely we would be rewarded for bringing him to justice, dead or alive."

Heinrich pats his axe.

"But Heinrich.....a witcher being able to summon demons most likely is a dangerous foe perhaps we should get some help before confronting the villain. Hmmm so they are nothing at all like the churchglass demons, those have wings and long sharp teeth....and two eyes."

"It is possible, but we are also dangerous foes, and having already banished this demon, I think it unlikely we should run into another. Without a pet demon he might only be able to cast spells, and I am given to believe that is a difficult thing to do when you are poked full of holes. Think of the money to be made, Klaus! You could gamble for a week, and we could buy your young friend a new shirt and a proper weapon!

I do worry about Mortus, though, being left in the city with no escort."

Mortus is waiting peacefully in the inn.   Since Klaus has left she has sipped her wine only sparingly and focused on her food though she has only taken a few bites.   She seems to be thinking very hard about something.   After a few minutes she calls the innkeeper over to ask him about the wine, listens to his answers, nods and then orders another glass, though her glass is still full and pays for it.
She had considered if she should go after Klaus and maybe try to rally the now drunken inn people to follow her, but she decided against it.   There was no need to take the risk of going into the sewer.   She just wants to buy some fine wine and return home.   Still she needs to wait until Heinrich reappears to give him his share of the gold.   For a second she considers disappearing.   40 gold crowns will buy her a fine horse.   She could be long gone from Bogenhafen before Heinrich discovered she was missing, but she dose not go.   Something is nagging at her, dragging her back to Bogenhafen.   She narrows her eyes and sips her wine again.   All she can do is wait for them to return

(OOC: Don't worry about it Rufus.   My upgrade is so much shorter than theirs anyways and I think staying in character is more important.)

Max looks very proud when Klaus tells him he did well. Eager to help further, he goes into the room and looks at the summoning circle. When he sees the words written at the centre, he kneels down and looks at them closely. "This is written in Classical Reman," he says, "I studied that at university. 'Ordo Septenarius' - that means 'the seven-part order, or something like that. It sounds like a secret club where people dabble in magic. There were some at the university... nothing I was ever involved in, of course! I've seen pentagrams like this before too. It's a common magical symbol." He looks around, nervously. "Uh, we studied the magical language at university too. It's part of the curriculum."

Julian takes out his vast array of hammers, chisels, spikes, saws and other tools, and sets about breaking open the metal cabinet. It takes him almost half an hour, but eventually he succeeds. It shouldn't have been that difficult - it was if some unnatural force was working against him.

Inside is a human skull, with an iron band around it like a crown. The skull is curiously distorted: the eye sockets are too large, the cheek bones too pointed, and there are far too many teeth. Also in the cabinet is a beautiful silver tray, decorated with scenes from the Deus Sigmar, that is likely worth 20 gold coins or more. Resting on the tray is an elaborate and very sharp dagger, the blade and handle of which are covered in relatively fresh blood - the blood is not greenish like the goblin's.

Are we going to take any of this magical stuff?  Worth a bit, but it would be easy to trace.

Yes,  there was a secret door in the corner . But I don't think I could open it from this side. We need to  investigate above ground.

But we also need to investigate the thieves.

I think we should find mortus, claim our reward then go to sleep.

"Shouldn´t we inform the city guard....the Knights Templar, the Elector Count? We are talking demons here, the bane of mankind. If there are chaos worshippers here who knows what is about to happen?"

Klaus looks very uneasy as he is superstitious and scared by the ruinous powers as like any good peasant born his parents told him myriad stories how the powers of chaos would come and haunt him should he do bad things.....Boris haunts him.

"I say we wrap all the stuff up as evidence and get out here, report to the authorities and then maybe try to figure out what is going on."

This room is below the richest part of town... we have no idea how far the conspiracy has spread.

We need to find an official we can trust... But first we can claim the reward for the goblin from the circus owner and the clerk, as well as inspecting the sewers on the way out. I'm starting to feel uneasy here, we mustn't linger. We do not want to be here when the owners come back.

Klaus`s face lightens up as he is convinced by the logic of Julians line of thinking.

"Ok...so lets take everything with us as we surely might harm the ruinous powers at work if we steal their tools of the trade. Leaving this place is also a splendid idea.  What thieves have you mentioned earlier? Oh and Max, I can understand that you are keen on proving yourself but in your state of health I would suggest for you to stay back a bit, we have some talking to do once we get out of here alive as I think right now your kind spirit leads to a very bad choice of companions and friends, but fear not if you stick to me I will help you avoid such bad influence on you. Heinrich what would you say?"

Heinrich takes the dagger and wipes it clean, then tucks it into his belt as a replacement for his knife.

"I say we take everything saleable, and destroy whatever is evil."

Heinrich will snatch up the misshapen skull and smash it to pieces, then kick the pieces into the sewer canal along with the black candles that had been in the candlesticks. He will put the tray in with the candlesticks to sell when they get out.

"I still would like to investigate beyond that secret door. As you say, it may be difficult to find an official we can trust, and we wouldn't know where to start. It is much better to have the criminal in hand, with undeniable evidence, in my experience. Then, no matter how corrupt the official, he will have to reward us to keep his own station."

When Heinrich smashes the skull, a wisp of reddish smoke escapes from inside it, and there is a brief, despairing wail - the sound seems to come from inside the skull, but at the same time it seems to come from very far away. The pieces sink without trace into the sewer water, while the candles bob around on the surface.

Max sways on his feet, and nearly falls. "I'm so tired," he says, "can you help me walk back, Klaus?" He puts his arm around Klaus's shoulder, practically hanging off him. It's just as well he doesn't weigh much... Klaus will have to support him on the walk back though the sewer.

The four of them set off for the manhole they entered by, Julian leading the way. To take his mind off his annoyance at Heinrich's destruction of important evidence, he studies the stonework of the sewer passages as he walks. The sewer is a fine example of dwarfish work, but it's clear that its human owners have neglected to maintain it. He spots several places where immediate repairs are needed to prevent further deterioration, and makes a mental note of their locations.

The candlesticks clink noisily against each other in Heinrich's makeshift loot bag, but the noise doesn't attract any attention. The group reach the manhole cover without incident. Max has to be practically hauled up the ladder. Back on the surface, they find that it is now very late: probably close to midnight. It's too late to contact any officials now, since they will all be in their beds. Klaus leads them to the Crossed Pikes, where Mortus is waiting for them. She tells them that there is a room booked for the four of them at the Surprised Goat inn, not far across town. Max is half asleep already, and his friends left the Crossed Pikes a while ago, so Klaus will have to take him to to the inn with the group. He can sleep on the floor.

Julian suddenly realizes that the Crossed Pikes tavern is the building directly over the guarded cellar full of (probably) stolen goods that he and Heinrich found in the sewer...

Heinrich won't apologize for destroying the skull. The pentagram on the floor and the presence of the demon are all the proof he needs, and he's a little annoyed that the group decided to retreat rather than hunt down the person responsible and bring him to justice. He'll be sulky.

"Heinrich, cheer up there soon wil be more than enough skulls to cave in, right now I think the Dwarf is right. Lets rest, think and figure out what to do next. I for my part will try to find some help for poor Max here, that wound looks pretty grim and I will try to get some help at the local guard barrack, they might either know where I can find help or might even have some charlatan around that can give him first aid. Julian can you direct me to the next city watch building? I will join you guys at the tavern afterwards.

While we go there Max, tell me more about your family and when you will be done with your studies of Empire law.....how rich was your family again?"

[Fandir and Max]

Julian checks his map, and tells Klaus that the town's main guard barracks is just down the street, by the postern gate.

Klaus sets off towards it, still supporting Max. As they walk, he tries to keep Max awake by asking him about himself. Max is half asleep, and his responses are dreamy and unclear. "Rich, very rich... father's a great man, very rich... sent me to Nuln, be a lawyer... been there four years, not been home... I miss my sister... 'she's more of a son to me than you are, runt,' father says... father's such a big, strong man... 'fetch the cane, runt,' he'd say... I love you, father..." Max starts weeping softly.

The doors are open at the barracks. Inside is an entry hall with a desk, behind which is seated a bored-looking watchman. When he sees Klaus enter, half-carrying a weeping Max, he narrows his eyes and says, "Well, what do you want? If he's drunk, take him elsewhere."

"Sigmar be blessed, greetings to you dear sir. This man was robbed, most likely someone smacked him with a rope or similar, found the poor fellow at the street close to the fair, you should know that he is noble born and a student of law in Nuln so you better hurry to find him some medical help."

The watchman looks at Klaus dubiously. "Noble, is he? Well, those trousers of his look like silk, so maybe you're right. Bring him over here into the lamp light. Let's see now: someone stole his shirt, did they? Great Ulric's Cock, he's a skinny bastard! You say a whack with a rope made this mark on his chest? I don't know, it looks nasty... more like a burn. Better get it looked at, or it might go bad. Seen it before." He nods sagely.

"There's a quack nearby who might do the job, if he can pay. Go out the door, turn left, first right, third house on the left with a sign showing a pestle and mortar. Knock loud so they'll hear. Ask for Doc Heidi. She's a real looker!" he smirks as he says this.

"If he wants to report the attack, take him to the festival court in the morning, since he's an out-of-towner. Now get out of here."

"Thanks Sir, and I will suggest to him that he will pay you some money later for your great deeds towards him." (Random unfriendly guardsman I will have forgotten in a minute).

"Now Max up with us to the Doc Heidi." Klaus yawns excessivly before he picks up Max and half carries him over to the described place where he starts to knock as loud as he can on the door. "Emergency oh...dear Sigmar, and Shallayah he might die if only someone could hear me and come to help." Knock knock.

Eventually, Klaus's knocking raises a response. The shutters are thrown open on a window above the door, and an... ugly... woman leans out.

The summoned up images of a beautiful young lady her perfect body only hidden by a loose bathrobe plop the instant the window goes open. So much for his plan to charm the womand to do it for free.....well he still could but. Nahhh not for Max.

"Greetings dear lady, and thanks that you came to help me and my poor friend in our peril. He was robbed and severly wounded. I was told by the guard that a kind hearted, wonderful woman that is exceptionally skilled in the trait of healing lives just down the street, so I hurried over here to get my friend here the needed help. Oh have I mentioned that he stems from a rich and noble family? My name is Klaus by the way"
