Miscellaneous History ...
« on: March 06, 2021, 02:57:33 PM »
Ha! After Gankom mentioned having a thread for history, this video came up this morning ...

"200 Years on the Erie Canal" ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLfGSXuHu5g

Although we've got some history threads on specific items, particularly different eras and wars, feel free to post miscellaneous history topics in here.

Enjoy! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::

You're a gentleman and a scholar GP.

I'm a bit fan of the various 'living' or recreating history. There's also a strong vibe of whats called experimental archeology, which is building and using things (often weapons) to try and figure out how they actually worked.

This guy does a lot of Steppe Horse stuff, including some freaking impressive horse archery. Just look how stable he is as he fires away.

There's also a channel calls Tods Workshop which is some of the best, although also often archery focused.

You posted in that other thread.  Then out of the blue youtube gives me that Erie canal story, followed by the Mississippi, and Transcontinental railroad stories.  It was like bingo, and fell into place nicely.  I had such a good morning watching those three videos above from a "Sunday Morning" program that I enjoy from time to time, and I will take a look at your links when I have a more alert moment than current.

Had a long day shopping for things for hobby terrain at Lowe's and Michael's, plus a sojourn to a hobby store where I picked up ... some things.  Will share more elsewhere at some point. :icon_wink: :icon_lol:

I had not heard of these board, drill, and silk myths.  I think he took a bit long over the course of the video, yet it was still interesting.

By the way, the last video caused me to look up the origin of "bodkin", and here is an interesting article found ...

Enjoy seeing faces of the past.  Not sure why, yet it seems as if there is a sense of curiosity resolved, although then arise new questions.  Liked the reading of the texts, too.

Here is a longer video of someone talking in more detail on these types of paintings ...

Apparently one of the latest history youtube trends is for people to try remaking, and then eating, 18th/19th century naval food.

Liked both those videos! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::

On the one with the WW1 era German, I counted 21 crew on the start, then in the next portion seems to be 19, but in the final stretch there are 21 until a 22nd pops out of the deck hatch.

Would love to have a model of a 28mm scale WW1 sub. :icon_cool:

One of the Canadian Military colleges has teamed up with a bunch of other organizations and is running a webinar series over the next few weeks dedicated to Canada's role during D-Day. Free to sign up for. Tonight is the second lecture on the Canadians stopping Rommels counterattack the day after D-Day, and two weeks ago was the first lecture giving a broad overview. Here's a video of the first one if anyones interesting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oewjirFzAsY

And the website itself if you want more info on whats coming.

Two neat podcasts came up in my recommendations. First is about the Battle of Midway, a podcast/interview with the co writer of Shattered Sword. Shattered Sword is probably one of the best histories of the battle out there right now.

https://youtu.be/lN79g34wjQA

Second on is from one of the blogs I regularly read, all about the Roman adaption of the Lorica Hamata. The less famous but likely more widespread Roman legionnaire armor.

What always makes me snicker about the old Charlton Heston Midway movie is when his bomber warps into a Corsair during the stock footage crash landing
