I watched a couple of vids on YouTube going through the rulebook and another of a game.
I looks like 40K is borrowing Infinity concepts with the reaction thing, which is fine.
The main rulebook doesn’t even cover units of any kind. Stats and points are provided in the getting started section of the instruction book. I figured this was coming but still weak when I see it.
So this means a codex each for each legion? Or at least 2 cover the loyal and traitors?
The getting started just covers what’s in the box, so no points or anything if you want to add a meltagun or missile launcher to your tactical squad.
So watching the demo game, which was well done as far as having everything painted with lots of nice scenery, turned into a mob fight in the middle of the board. Just stupid. And I know all 40K games can be different but I just see too much of this. What is the point of a 6x4 table loaded with nice terrain if everything is just going to end up in the center? Maybe it was the scenario they were playing I don’t remember the details. I just remember it being really unsatisfying to watch. Also, the models are near Primaris in size, so bigger figures taking up more space on the board.
Also, I didn’t see the tactical squads being split up into combat squads. Maybe they’ll have rules for that, I don’t know. Maybe the nature of the Heresy will just involve these hordes of units.
I just don’t like this starter set. I know of comes with a lot of figures but it seems limited with what you can do with them unless you buy a whole bunch of other stuff. Even the marines don’t have many options against the tank and Dreadnought unless someone runs up and punches it with a powerfist. Great.
I think the Heresy can be something interesting a dedicated gaming group can dive into, but I am not sure this going to be a rewarding experience for the casual gamer. There just seems too much to buy. And maybe that is the point of this game too.
Times are changing, and GW with it, and I am becoming more and more disinterested with their newer products than ever before. Me changing could def be a reason too, but GW isn’t pulling me back either. If anything it’s just pushing me away.
