POLL: Which do you prefer ... Crossbowmen or Handgunners?
« on: June 23, 2020, 01:09:26 PM »
Which do you prefer ... crossbowmen or handgunners?

And a secondary question ...

1. Do you even use these units in your empire army, and if so, how do you use them?

I have tended to use crossbowmen.  I will put handgunners in a detachment from time to time, but if i use a separate unit of missile troops, then it is usually crossbowmen.

Range of the Croosbows (nice typo there GP!) is what pulls me over towards them, only have 2x units of 10 models though

Got it, thanks! :::cheers:::

Yes the range seems beneficial.  I have one unit of 10 Averland crossbows, and one unit of 10 Tilean crossbows, and I've been known to use these as separate units form the rest of the infantry.  Having the handgunners (currently 8 Averland) as attachments seems to be useful for the armor piercing at times.

I do have a unit of 10 handgunners that I intend to paint for my Marienburg Merchant House/Matorean units.

The Empire was built on faith, steel and gunpowder. it's not the Empire without the mighty handgun!

On the battlefield I also tend to use mostly handgunners for my Empire chaps. The armor piercing is really nice and it looks better with my army. I have used a crossbows pretty frequently, but usually as smaller detachments. Fluff wise crossbows tend to be militia groups or guild irregulars, while the Handgunners are standing forces.

Handguns.

I am a very modern general.

I like the handguns too. In spite of their superior range crossbows seem so... primitive.

Extra AP. That said, I havenít taken any of either since the end of 6th edition.
Pistoliers, outriders, helblaster, mortar and rocket battery all better value for points IMO.

I'm in the Handgun category.  My army usually will see Orcs, Chaos, or Dwarves across the table, so I like to be confident that I can put the enemy down, not have my shots deflected by lucky armour saves.

Handgunners with the hochland on the champ. The extra 1-6 inches first time they fire (in 6th) makes up for the crossbow range, and armour piercing is a nice bonus

Only half as many folks answering this "poll" (15) as when a person started warhammer (30 at this post), and looks like handguns has 50% of the votes, while 25% for crossbows, and 25% for no preference.

I dispute that.

No preference is not neither. Its indifferent.
If neither was an option, I would have voted for that.

Good point. And I've corrected my statement ...

Only half as many folks answering this "poll" (15) as when a person started warhammer (30 at this post), and looks like handguns has 50% of the votes, while 25% for crossbows, and 25% for no preference.

Cool.
The only time I took them was 6th edition.
Once 7th came along, and 8th, I never took them again.

I play 3rd edition so not sure how newer handguns work.
I use handgunners in a defensive role.
The armour save mod is great when they are at close range, such as being charged, which is why I use them in defence.
If the scenario/game is about me attacking I will try not to use them, except maybe to defend my cannons.

My human armies currently only have handgunners. I am not the very model of a modern major-general, by any means, but by virtue of my using historical Renaissance era miniatures for my Empire and Estalians, handguns are just more readily available. I do want crossbowmen though, and by Sigmar I shall have some! And archers. The whole lot!

I am also 100% Handgunners.
One has to go with change.

I would love to use some Crossbowmen because I like the style but I don't see any advantage to Handgunners.
In defense play the Handgunners play a very decent part.

Cheers, Wodner

Depends on edition. In 8th edition, the enemy closes in to you too quick, that there are a lot less advantages to crossbows than there used to be in say 6th edition. Small arms fire in general I think is kinda rubbish in 8th edition because of unit sizes anyway.

If that is accurate, then another reason for me not to play 8th.

8th was an awful edition start to finish  :closed-eyes:

If I'm going to play Oldhammer (and I do have a complete High Elf army to do so with) I'll spring for 6th or even 4th before going back to 8th.

Alex
you know you can just play 8th, right?

I used handgunners as a mainstay block in my 6th ed army.   10 of them were quite useful.

8th edition was not my favourite. Which generally is my problem with the T9A base ruleset.

There are some great ideas in it though. That after a few more editions could have been great.

7th is my preference, at least until the skaven book came out...
