Battles!
« on: January 23, 2021, 03:30:48 AM »
My gaming group is playing Warhammer again!  Well, a heavily house-ruled version of it.  But Warhammer!  Sadly I'm terrible for taking pictures.

A year and a half ago or so we played the old Battle for East Gate (Dwarfs vs. Greenskins) using our system.  Had loads of fun watching Skarsnik try to stop dwarf columns with goblin archers.

Now we're 2/3 of the way through the Circle of Blood, but replacing Undead with Chaos and Bretonnians with Empire.  Things have...not gone well for Chaos.  Gorefist's attempt to storm the village of Ulterbad and summon the Undead entombed therein failed at the last turn when a half-strength unit of spearmen managed to rout and then run down his shaman (though the priest, Otto von Kossbach, did fall in the battle to a hail of ungor arrows); at the same time, his lieutenant Feytor tried to slay the powerful wizard Phillip the Druid and disrupt a key ley line, but the engagement was indecisive and Phillip escaped.  Last Sunday, the Empire managed to secure the road to the dwarf hold of Karak Thrund against a host of beastmen, and then Imperial forces (barely) managed to hold off Gorefist himself as he tried to capture the bridge to Grunburg.

This Sunday comes the final battle - Gorefist's army at the very gates of Grunburg.  Thanks to holding the bridge, the Imperial forces have had time to lay in some earthworks and have assembled a strong force of state troops, knights, and (thanks to their victory in securing the road) dwarfs of Karak Thrund.  In addition, the city governor has received the aid of a prominent general - Kristoph von Alfsteain, Seneschal of the Knights Griffon.  Gorefist, thanks to the failure of his shaman, has had to rely on greenskin mercenaries and conscripts instead of unfaltering undead, so he'll have to deal with Animosity amongst many of his own regiments.  Still, his army is vast and numerous, and his warriors are, one-on-one, certainly a match for the Empire's state troops.

It's been loads of fun to handle this.  I'm effectively GM-ing, just setting up the battles and handing each player their armies and instructions.  It's fun to see the way that prior battles play into the last one, and it's entertaining to see the players handling the game with the long-term (ie, next battle) in view instead of just risking everything on a one-shot engagement.  And it will be fun to see how they handle this week, where both sides have some of the victory point conditions but neither one knows exactly what the other one gets major points for accomplishing.

This type of campaign write-up is definitely something I wouldn't mind seeing again; I know it's specific to just a couple of armies as written, but it makes for a fun series of battles and the lore fleshes out a tiny little part of the Warhammer setting.

Pictures!  Though the dwarfs are missing...one of my players is bringing them tomorrow.  So the empty trays...just imagine dwarfs there.

First up, the main battlefield overview.  The Imperial commander has chosen his position well, anchoring his line on the watchtower and river; if all goes according to plan, his cavalry will be able to sweep down the open field, overrunning Gorefist's horde from the flank.

Second, the cavalry's view of Gorefist's battleline.  With only a few wolf riders to oppose them directly, they should have no problem sweeping over into those pesky Night Goblins...hang on a second, that sounds kind of dangerous!

Third, the view from the tower.  Melgar's Crossbowmen are looking at an awful lot of enemy troops.  Gorefist himself is leading the Chaos Knights, while his standard is carried by the Orcish hero, Drog, in the front of the orcish battleline.

Fourth, the view from Gorefist's battleline.  That tower is well-defended!

Finally, the Imperial provincial ruler, Graf Jodas von Gövinhof, is advised of the details of the engagement from his vantage point on the safe side of the river.  If things go poorly, he will be forced to hurry back to Grunburg in order to take command of the militia and put up a last-ditch defense of the city.

And it's over!  It was a very hard-fought battle.

Gorefist's plan of a pre-dawn attack was thwarted by his own men, as getting orcs, goblins, beastmen, and humans onto the field and into formation took far longer than he wanted.  It was past 10 by the time the Chaos forces began their advance upon the Imperial lines.

Below, an image mid-battle.  The Imperial cavalry saw off the goblin wolf riders with little problem, but goblin fanatics slowed their advance some and goblin archers caused a few casualties with long-range volley fire.  The dwarf clansmen fought fiercely with the Toechomper goblins but eventually, at risk of being surrounded, they were forced to flee for the safety of their own lines!  (the goblins subsequently fled from Hammerers and were run down by knights, so dwarf honor was avenged).   In the center, the orcish regiments ran the gauntlet of cannon and crossbow fire, and smashed aside the Grunburg halberdiers.  However, the Knights of the Broken Sword cut their own hole through the Chaos battleline, sweeping across Gorefist's path before he could engage them and causing considerable havoc in the backfield.  On the road on the Imperial right, the Trollslayers earned an honorable death at the hands of a giant and a contingent of warriors of Nurgle while the Middenland spears held the line against a War-Gor on a chariot.  Sadly, their initial victory gave them an abundance of overconfidence, and they were subsequently routed and slaughtered by Warriors of the Dark Gods.  Goblin wolf riders with spears attacked a detachment of halberdiers, who held briefly before routing; the goblins would go on to tear through another detachment and then a regiment of handgunners by battle's end!

This scenario gave victory points for specific objectives (ie, destroy enemy unit = +1, capture enemy banner = +1, etc.).  Actual unit values were irrelevant.  The Empire received bonus points if they killed Gorefist (they didn't), captured his battle standard (they didn't), and controlled table quarters, as control of the field would allow them to subsequently contain and destroy the Chaos forces.  Chaos got major bonus points for capturing the watchtower (they did) and taking control of the table quarter with the ford, as that would give them a clear path to Grunburg so that they could sack the city.  A table quarter was controlled by having 10 models and no enemies, or by having three times the enemy's unit strength present.

At battle's end, a single Imperial halberdier regiment held the ford - 20 brave men in the growing darkness, ready to take on whatever came across the waters.  Chaos had a unit strength in the table quarter of...59.   :eusa_wall:

One model.  ONE CHAOS MODEL would have given them 5 victory points.

Final score?  Empire 15, Chaos 14.

As darkness fell, it became apparent that Gorefist's army had failed to seize the crossing.  Come morning, the Imperial forces would hold both his front and his flank, and while no one doubted that finishing the job would be a hard task, it was clear that Grunburg was not going to be sacked this time.  Frustrated by the failings of his greenskin and beastman troops, Gorefist fell back with the unbroken core of his army - his iron-clad warriors and elite sworn knights - promising to return and exact vengeance upon the city that withstood him.  This time.

Yeah, 8x4 in 2-foot sections, connected with wooden pegs.  It goes into the closet like table leaves and keeps the wife happy.

Well, I said I was terrible about taking pictures and...I wasn't wrong.  Totally forgot to get any this week.

Gaming group has started on the Grudge of Drong campaign, with an added scenario and a couple of new factions.  Goblins are a secondary caste of miners in the dwarf regions and hence the dwarves occasionally get some greenskin ally units, while instead of High Elves there's an Imperial colony...which is actually being run by a vampire.  =D

Ran two scenarios - in the first, a bunch of drunken miners headed down Grudge Pass to make their complaints heard, while in the second, the dwarfs tried to take control of a watchtower overlooking the human colony.

Both scenarios were sadly one-sided.  In Grudge Pass, the miners barely ever stopped to puke in their rampaging advance and plowed into and then through the Imperial troops sent to stop them.  The Imperial player's last turn consisted of nothing but rallying fleeing units.  His general was even routed by night goblins!  Very sad.  To be fair, he also was treating the goblin units very carefully for fear of the fanatics...of which there were none.

In the second battle, the dwarfs found themselves facing undead guardians of the tower.  They could have sent a unit to march off the enemy board edge to give themselves an extra turn but instead threw everything at the watchtower from the start.  They saw off ghouls and wolves with little problem, but found their own units clogged up directly below the tower, which gave the undead time to reach them.  The undead general, a Wight Lord, proceeded to land Killing Blows on two dwarven champions and the dwarven general.  By the time the dwarves had managed to pin him down, they were in endgame and their stubby little legs couldn't quite make it to the tower to try to storm it.  The game ended with skeletal archers showering arrows on the retreating dwarfs, who's commander needs to take a Slayer oath for a horrific series of bad rolls that doomed his side (Panic, Fear, Break...didn't matter, he failed more of them than he passed!).
