Are You Ready for the ... Return of the Old World :icon_question:

It's anyone's guess as to when it might finally get here, although are you ready or not or getting ready :icon_question:

If you are ready ... fabulous!

If you are not getting ready ... are you planning anything?

If you are getting ready ... what are you doing to get ready?

Though it depends on the rules. I'd like a return to 6th or even early 7th style that powered up the average joes over monsters

If I recall, last word from GW was they are doing up a new set of rules, or at least that's the current rumor.

 - - -

I have a bunch of Empire figures organized on a big piece of foam board for further painting.  Plus I have 5 crossbowmen made from the OP militia kit, 4 spearman from the 6th edition, a converted warrior priest on barded warhorse, and a Tilean general, all on my painting desk in process and partially painted.

Yes but I'd like the new set of rules to be one in which my infantry are the kings of the battlefield again

I put no, but for some kinda odd reasons. It can essentially boil down to the fact I'm not getting ready cause I don't really think I need to. I'm curious to see what the new stuff is (and fingers crossed its good!) but I'm busy enough I know I likely wont actually play it. And I already keep collecting and building fantasy, but its all geared to our local homebrew setting. We'll adapt elements of The Old World into it, like we do with every game both lore and mechanically. but I'm currently unsure how much it'll actually add to our local circle beyond some hopefully sweet new models.

An interesting reply, thanks for sharing those thoughts.  Suspect many folks have moved on to other areas of the hobby.  Yours sounds like good fun.

I moved even further into historicals, except I am hoping whatever they end up with for rules is easy enough to pick up and play that it might make for some fun gaming eventually.

I just got done this morning putting black paint on those spearmen's spear tips and crossbow men's bolt tips.  Although with a wee bit of left over paint I also topped off two midieval figures kettle helmets, and an AWI Brit Grenadiers head piece too.

Old World never went anywhere. Got the books, can play it. Got like-minded friends, so do play it.

I'll surely keep an eye on the rules and models, but really modern GW has lost its glamour and cannot price its figures competitively, so I'm not holding my breath.

True, the Old World can still be used, like Padre with his Tilea campaign, and yourself with friends returning to 6th edition. :icon_cool:

And I hear ya on modern GW.  The pricing has always been a bit over the top though.  I'm hoping for the rules to be decent, yet not counting my chickens, not even after they hatch, because as we've seen even the old WFB got axed and that has had quite the impact.

So seems like you're ready, although pragmatic as well, congrats! :::cheers:::

Well the Mordheim starter, the 6th ed starter and the Free Company/Militia box were very competitively priced. They even did Bargain Boxes back in the day. Their AoS Start Collecting boxes used to have some superb deals too.

And nowadays there are several companies with prices that clearly surpass GW, model-for-model and quality-for-price. So GW is not even the worst.

Just saying. It hasn't always been like it's today, and it doesn't have to be like that in the future. Unless GW becomes solely an IP holding company or really start to make the best models in the hobby (which they've never done, IMHO), they need to price their product sensibly. And the market is increasingly competitive, with 3d printing and all that plastic machinery in Poland.

Agreed.  If I recall, both 40K and W:AoS are also with smaller sized starter boxes, plus those bigger ones that come out during the holiday season.  My guess is when the Old World gets going, not only will they have a decently priced starter box set, which will probably include a full sized rule book, if some of GW's more recent releases are any indication of such.

Most definitely.

I'm not sure GW is going to see it much if at all differently than they do currently.  There's always been complaints about their pricing, except if ya want into their competitive environment, or even the social communities in both their stores or independents, it is still very a much a game of buy GW figures and play a game.

Basically No,  but I’ll be interested to see what the figures are like. Then it will depend on what I’m working on at the time (are we talking about a year or more before it starts to roll out?) as I have no current plans for new builds and a lot of stuff built that I don’t have the enthusiasm to paint at the moment.

JAK ... have you seen the bits for Bretonnia and Tomb Kings?

True, not full figures yet, except it is promising that the style seems to be similar to the previous Brets and TK, plus it seems if these really are going to be the bits on the sprues, then a variety of figures will be possible, and perhaps convertions easier than some of the more post-WFB figures have been.

Yes – they look really good; the computer design joined with the improvement in plastic moulding can give so much finer detail and better looking figures, although I find this fine detail and handling doesn’t mix and they damage easier.

On the whole I’m not really happy with any companies digital designed stuff, not sure why but think its that it just doesn’t have the organic flow of traditional hand sculpted figures. (A gripe I also have with current 3D printing).

First, I'd like to see how massively overpriced the books are, because it's highly unlikely that they'll be making any minis I'll actually want to buy, I've bought only a small handful of NEW Citadel figures since about 2000.
Plus, I have an  entire storage room full of unpainted minis for every army and in every scale you can imagine, it would take me several lifetimes to paint all of them, the last thing I need is to buy more plastic (or lead).
