Men of Helstroms 4th!
« on: August 10, 2007, 06:37:49 PM »
General Helstrom strode out onto the dais within the hall of the Bogenhafen, his many surviving commanders arayed before him. Their men we camped both within the Bogenhafens walls as well as in the surrounding area, each force provided with enough food for a feast that night. The General cleared his throat, quietening the room.

"Men of the Empire, in the past days we have achieved a great victory over all the evil that plagues us in our very homes. We have defeated the mutant, the beast and the heretic. We have slaughtered countless Greenskin and made fast our alliances with our ancient friends. This night I congradgulate you of Helstroms 4th, you who have brought peace to our villages and our roadways, to our very people.

Captains and Generals, feast, for you have faced the enemy and triumphed!"

A raucous cheer went up among the gathered men, and so the feast began.

Here, here!

---------------

Ortolf sat and thought of the great successes of this last campaign.  The roar of the men around him snapped him back into reality.  He lifted his goblet high and toasted General Helstrom and took a long heavy swig.

He exhaled heavily, realizing his great burden was through.  All of the enemy armies were retreating and on the run.  Only old allies remained, and they too would soon leave.  Thoughts of home began to filter into the old soldier's mind.  Never before had he missed that forsaken tract of land so much.  He was getting too old for all of this, or so he thought.

He eyed the generals and captains about him and smiled.  Yes, he would head home to Wissenland and begin a new life.  One without fighting.  He would rebuild that old town and get that mill back in working order too.  All of this fighting he could leave to the younger soldiers, for they were capable of doing the job, they had just proved it.

Commander Martin Von Storegothe gazed around the hall, spotting here and there men who had been under his command in the Reiks Marches, though he had not been able to command them in the most direst of times. Martin shook his head, uncomfortable in the hall where these commanders had gathered. His greatest achievement in this campaign was the healthy return of most of his soldiers after the disaster of Albrecht's Tower, as well as on the Blood Bowl field.

Martin spotted a face he had met very briefly before he had been sent to the Reik's Marches, and so went over, "Ortolf, it's good to see you lived through the fighting."

"Martin," began Ortolf with his characteristic smile.  The veteran leaned heavily on his arms to lift himself up, feeling great discomfort from the various wounds about his body.

"It is good to see you as well.  Your men have done a fine job.  Congratulations to you on your successful defense of the Marches," he stated as he bowed to show his admiration.

"Ortolf, don't be so modest. You yourself lead the Talabec Border in such an astounding defense. You are the true honored commander here."

Martin motioned for the older man to sit, then took a seat himself, "I must admit, I and my men were incapacitated for most of the fighting because of the magical storms which raged around my defensive station, Albrecht's Tower, early in the campaign. My men were forced to lay low in the forests far from any man who might have caught or malady, for we were stricken by magical plagues and stricken by strange curses. When I finally deemed my men fit for combat again, it was upon the last day of the fighting, and even then we were asked to defend this fortress we are in now."

Martin sighed miserably, "I've been recalled by my father back to our lands, and I am unsure of the reasons. It may be in disgust of my actions, or because trouble threatens him with part of his available fighting men away."

Commander Dolohev Stonheim III raised his glass to General Helstrom’s toast and nodded in approval as his fellow commanders let out a cheer of victory.  The ale was as refreshing as water from a mountain spring and it tasted of home.  Within the walls of the Great Hall of Bogenhafen, general Helstrom had gathered the victorious Commanders of Helstrom’s 4th.  All were exhausted from the campaign and the week long march from the depths of the Great Forest but tonight, they celebrated their defense of the Empire and received a hero’s welcome.  The Nemesis Crown had been found at the last possible hour by the Dwarven High King and it was said that Karl Franz himself held off the enemy while the dwarves secured their treasure.  The forces of evil retreated to the shadows from whence they came and the Empire’s “allies” had also boarded ships or marched to their lands, leaving the heart of the forest quiet once more.

“All is quiet to the dead”, thought the Commander as he stepped from the room and through an archway that led to the battlement.  The air was warmer than that which he had become accustomed to throughout the campaign and he closed his eyes and took in the sweet, earthy smell of the orchards and fields.  The sounds of the simple celebrations of the peasants caught his ear and the music of the lute and fife echoed a familiar tune in the quiet twilight.  Tomorrow, he would begin the journey home with what remained of his army.  One hundred fifty miles north of Bogenhafen lay the lands of his family, nestled between the cliffs of the Grey Mountains and the gentle flow of the River Shilder.  Within those lands, in the castle of his ancestors, his aging father anxiously awaited news of his return and prayed to Sigmar that the horrors of this war would soon be forgotten by his people.  As Dolohev stared at the mountains on the horizon, a presence stepped out onto the battlement and interrupted his thoughts with the muffled clank of steel on stone and the familiar smell of sweat, blood, incense and pungent herbs.  The comforting baritone of Brother Thabeus of Sigmar began to rumble.

“You have often dreamt of home my liege and now you are here; yet your heart is troubled by the ones that you have lost along the way”.

“Yes, Brother”, he replied, “my heart is heavy because I have lost so many good men in this…fruitless war.  How can I stand before my father and our people knowing that I might have done something different, anything that might have saved their lives?”

Thabeus stared hard at the young Commander and replied with an icy tone.  “My liege, Sigmar has given you strength according to your purpose.  It is your fate to lead them - to the very realm of Chaos if need be.  You must not falter in your duty.  You feel responsible for those who have fallen under your watch but it is by your actions and their sacrifice that you can return to a home that stands unaffected and idyllic; a home that is not ravaged by fire and the sword, tainted by Chaos and evil.”

Thabeus’s tone softened as he continued.  “Your men died bravely and they too had a purpose.  To protect our lands and guard this great Empire of ours against those who would see it lie in ruin.  Do not be troubled by their sacrifice but rather celebrate their courage, for Sigmar will see them through to Morr’s Garden where they will be hailed as heroes forever.”

Thabeus’s words struck down Dolohev’s doubts and washed away his sorrows like a swim in the headwaters of the Reik.  Behind him, the sounds of celebration in the hall became a comfort, for there were his brothers in arms who had fought with him for the Empire and Karl Franz, against unspeakable odds.  Tonight they would celebrate and tomorrow they would part ways to whatever fate awaited them.  Dolohev turned towards the archway and paused, taking one last look at the horizon.

“For Sigmar, for Reikland,” he spoke, staring into Thabeus's eyes with newfound determination.

Brother Thabeus nodded in approval, then turned and disappeared into the calm of the night.

General Hans Von Wynter nodded in approval of his commander's speech, tapping his flagon on the worn wooden table. But he couldn't stay. Making his excuses, he rose and made his way out into the warm summer night. His Steed, Cappalon, was saddled and waiting for him, along with his Aide de camp, a eternally cheerful Middenheimer called Lupor.
For once he wasn't smiling. He passed his general a slip of parchment. "The butcher's bill, my Lord".
Von Wynter grunted. He'd examine the list in detail later, talk to the regimental Captains, send letters to any notable families who had lost their precious sons. This was what he hated the most. But it was his duty.
"Send a message to Division. We'll be leaving for home and barracks shortly."
His Aide bowed, and quickly departed.

Von Wynter waited, until the younger man was out of earshot. "Well?"
Luthor Huss stepped out of the shadows. He scowled at the General. "You have performed as I would have expected of a General of the Empire,"
"So have I proved that I am not my fathers' son yet?"
"There is always the next time, Wynter. You'll always have that stain," Huss hefted his hammer. "And I'll never forget Lord Wynter, corrupted by the Ruinous Powers, who once waged war against his homeland."
Von Wynter turned white, but relaxed as the demigoge stalked away.
He would purge his family name of the stain, even if it took him a lifetime.

[My first army was Chaos, and I named my general Lord Wynter. After moving onto the Empire, I resisted giving a character that name for many years. This campaign is the first time I've used a Von Wynter.]

In the ruins of Steinberg...

Reynard was shrouded and laid upon the cold stone by the men he had so proudly fought beside.
The campaign had ended, and they were going home. It had been the general's only wish since the blood brawl on the fields of middenheim.

Johann Feurbach laid a hand upon the stone casket. The orcish warlord had left Reynard to bleed out on the field, an ignoble death for a noble man. a small contingent of stirland riverpatrol stood beside the body, black bands wrapped around their white velvet arms.

"Home or Glory," murmured Feurbach.

Very poignant and sombre.  Bit of a surprise you killed off your character man!  The thought had crossed my mind with Ortolf, but he's just too tough to ornery to die.

Reynard had it coming, it was about time. His men go home, he recieves that Imperial glory of dying on the field.

I'm gonna take up a new army, 8 years using the empire has left me feeling slightly jaded and sick of the hobby. Something new and shiny should kick me back into gear... I hope!

I was just glad that scrivener and I worked in the constant assassination attempts on huss into the actual background!

Thanks for all your work wissenlander, it's a shame that all this has to end. If you need any help with any background, or anything at all just sing out!

We saw countless slaughtered, maimed, enslaved, burned, tainted and buried.  We lost good men and women.  We endured hell.

The others that we did save outnumber those we did not.  Although pithy comfort, we did our job.  Thousands, indeed millions will see tomorrow.

Empire soldiers.  Hold your head high.

Whilst we mourn our dead we must also be aware that we are able to replenish our forces far quicker than our allies. Whether they like it or not we have become vital to the forces of good.

We are all important parts to the forces of good.

Remember this.  Your able family includes men from Bretonnia, or from Cathay, or Estalia or the untamed Border Princes.  It includes Dwarfs and Elves and Ogres, our kinsmen the Halflings, the jungle dwellers known as Lizardmen and even the madcap Forest Fey, Fairies, spirits and the like.

Humanity is the keystone, but the enemies of Evil stand together.  The 4 Devils will know death.  Together we are strong.  Together we shall win.

No, of course they do not stand together. The forces of evil bicker and squabble amongst themselves as much as the forces of good. And we stand alone, at the end. But we have always stood alone. Our allies proved their mettle during the recent campaign - only at the end did they decide that they could not win through without us.
